Svētā Grāla mīta elementi – metavēstījuma veidošanas līdzeklis kriptovēstures romānos
2014
Promocijas darbā pētīts individuālos vēstījumos izmantotu Svētā Grāla mīta elementu potenciāls ietekmēt metavēstījumu. Kritiski izvērtēti vēstījuma un metavēstījuma jēdzieni, aplūkotas mīta funkcijas un mīta elementiem piemītošs resakralizācijas potenciāls, sniegts vēsturiskais Svētā Grāla mīta un Romas Katoļu baznīcas vēstījumu attiecību fons. Iezīmētas kriptovēstures romāna kā žanru hibrīda konvencijas. Analizējot kriptovēstures vēstījumus, uzrādīts mitoloģiskās un zinātniskās domāšanas konflikts, atklātas stāstītāju identitātei aktuālākās tēmas un pretestība metavēstījumam. Salīdzināti ārzemju un latviešu kriptovēstures romānu aktantu identitātes reprezentanti. Vienotā sistēmā skatīts in…
Narratives by women managers about spousal support for their careers
2014
In this article we present a qualitative study of spousal support for the careers of women managers. The research material consists of the narratives of 25 women managers in Finland. The study has two main implications. Firstly, unlike previous studies, we use a narrative approach to demonstrate that a woman manager's career and spousal support are experienced as ambiguous and evolving over the career. The support was constructed by the women managers as flourishing, irrelevant, deficient or inconsistent. Secondly, to increase our knowledge about gender relations, we combine discussion of the topic with gender order analysis and suggest that gender order is critical for an understanding of …
Explanations of success and failure in management learning : What can we learn from Nokia's rise and fall
2016
International audience; In this paper, we study the changing explanations of success and failure over the course of a firm's history. We build on a discursive approach that highlights the role of narrative attributions in making sense of corporate performance. Specifically, we analyze how the Nokia Corporation was framed first as a success and later as a failure and how these dimensions of performance were explained in various actors' narrative accounts. In both the success and failure accounts, our analysis revealed a striking black-and-white picture that resulted in the institutionalization of Nokia's metanarratives of success and failure. Our findings also reveal a number of discursive a…
Volcanic risk and the role of the media. A case study in the Etna area
2019
On December 24, 2018, the Etna volcano has recorded a significant eruption. Linked to this phenomenon, after a seismic swarm of 72 shocks, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck a large area North of Catania city, on the Eastern coast of Sicily. Six villages reported 28 injured people and damages to the building. According to seismologists the earthquake had an unusual level of magnitude. Yet, despite the real danger of this event, many people who live around the volcano, in one of the most densely populated areas of Sicily, perceived these facts in an ambivalent way. Indeed, their lives continued as before even in awareness of the natural hazard, while several media presented the situation as r…
William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury. A study of time sequences, shifts in time and linking mechanisms
2019
The aim of my current research in the frame of my PhD studies is to study the time structure of William Faulkner’s The Soun d and the Fury, with special attention to Benjy’s chapter, in order to establish whether there is a cohesive link between any two consecutive, apparently disconnected episodes narrated in Benjy’s part. The theoretical framework builds upon the theories on narrative syntax , from Aristotle to Propp, Lévi - Strauss, Greimas, Todorov and Genette, on the one hand, and the research on the concept of time across disciplines such as physics, psychology and philosophy, on the other. The methodology includes both quant itative (measurement of the number of lines devoted to each…
From being ignored to engaging in dialogue : Young boys' narratives of children's participation in child–parent conflicts
2023
This paper examines children's opportunities to participate in everyday child–parent conflicts as revealed in young boys' fictional narratives. The data were collected from 19 boys aged 3–6 years using the Story Magician's Play Time method. Narrative analysis yielded four story types: ignored participation stories, parent-directed participation stories, child-directed participation stories and dialogical participation stories. The study illustrates that when considering children's participation in child–parent conflicts, differences between children in their opportunities to participate in resolving conflicts should be taken into account. The boys' stories draw attention to the importance o…
Imagining a “post-carbon” future? Climate change as represented by media and film industries
2020
This study explores current trends in representing and communicating climate change by media industries. It reviews the current literature on mainstream media narratives of climate change focusing on their naturalization of progress and their techno-optimism (e.g., as regards geoengineering). It provides insight on how the media industry’s commercial agenda is linked to the types of disseminated messages and dominant imaginaries. It compares respective codes inherent in news media and film/fictional representations of climate change on representative examples. It traces the evolution of disaster/dystopian genres that involve climate issues. It discusses the implications from such a comparat…
Gendered positioning: Addressing gendered power and cultural discourses in therapeutic conversations
2016
This research examined gendered positioning in therapeutic conversations, especially in treatment of intimate partner violence (IPV). A feminist-informed reading combined with a discursive psychological approach was applied in three studies on positioning in therapeutic conversations. This reading focused on gendered positioning, gendered power and cultural discourses. Thus, the aim of this research was to examine how gender is constructed in therapeutic conversations that deal with couple relationship issues, and how the power distribution this entails is addressed in these conversations. The data consisted of videotaped and transcribed couple therapy sessions and group treatment sessions …
