Local Equalization and Wide Areas Land Planning in Syracuse
2016
Abstract The implementation process of the Syracuse's Master Plan is characterized by the widespread use of “urban negotiation”. The Municipality has drawn up a protocol aimed at obtaining areas for facilities and public infrastructure in different areas basing on the rule of the transfer of a portion of land in return for the building permission for the remaining part. Since these areas are variously characterized, the negotiation process may not be fair to Municipality or convenient to land owners. Basing on an equalization pattern, this study provides, for each area, the indexes of fairness and convenience, and, more specifically, the difference between the market value of the areas achi…
Constitutional rules and competitive politics: their effects on secessionism
2002
Albert Breton and Pierre Salmon argue that the effects of constitutiona l rules depend on the nature of political competition and on some meta-rules that contain procedures regulating the application and the modification of constitutiona l rules. They outline two models of competition - electoral competition and compound government competition - and describe the nature of the transactions between the parties involved in the two corresponding settings. In both, the transactions are over constitutional rules and ordinary goods and services, all of which are arguments in the utility functions of citizens. To make the discussion more concrete, the paper focuses on the demand for political auton…
Negotiating Emancipation and Nationalism: Finnish Girls’ Literature from 1889–1901
2017
In this chapter, Myry Voipio explores the development of early Finnish girls’ literature, published at the turn of the nineteenth century, and how the novels discuss questions of nationality and emancipation. Voipio analyzes how four novels, Toini Topelius’ (1889) I utvecklingstid [In the time of development], Tekla Roschier’s Auringon noustessa 1898 [At sunrise], and two that use girls’ names as their titles, Hilja Haahti’s Helvi (1900), and Immi Hellen’s Eeva Aarnio (1901), depict their protagonists’ adolescent years. Voipio pays special attention to how the genre of girls’ literature has been reviewed and interpreted in Finland.
Collaborative Problem Solving in Finnish Pre-service Teacher Education: A Case Study
2017
This chapter provides results from a case study utilising the ATC21STM assessment portal in the context of pre-service teacher education in Finland. The results from the portal are combined with a questionnaire regarding teamwork and collaboration dispositions. Twenty-four pre-service teachers completed both these measures. The students of this study were following two divergent teacher education programs that had different profiles in terms of their study contents and methods of studying. The participants of both groups tended to be highly disposed to collaborate and work in teams, and their collaborative problem solving skills can be described as very good. The participants’ measured soci…

The Social Exclusion Bench Tool (SEBT): A visual way of assessing interpersonal social exclusion
2021
People usually prefer to appear with an inclusive and positive attitude to others’ eyes. For this reason, the self-report scales assessing social exclusion intentions are often biased by social desirability. In this work, we present an innovative graphical tool, named Social Exclusion Bench Tool (SEBT), for assessing social exclusion not influenced by social desirability. The tool is based on the consistency between social distance and physical distance evaluation. The results showed that in two samples of adults from Italy (N = 252) and the UK (N = 254), the SEBT positively correlated with self-report measures of social exclusion, but not with the social desirability measure. The tool has …
Contratto ed emergenza sanitaria in Italia
2021
Coexistence between IEEE802.15.4 and IEEE802.11 through cross-technology signaling
2017
When different technologies use the same frequency bands in close proximity, the resulting interference typically results in performance degradation. Coexistence methods exist, but these are often technology specific and requiring technology specific interference detection methods. To remove the root cause of the performance degradation, devices should be able to negotiate medium access even when using different technologies. To this end, this paper proposes an architecture that allows crosstechnology medium access by means of a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) scheme. In order to achieve cross-technology synchronization, which is required for the TDMA solution, an energy pattern beacon…
The micro-politics of parliamentary powers : European parliament strategies for expanding its influence in the EU institutional system
2018
The European Parliament (EP) has gained considerable new powers since it was first established in 1952. Why has this happened, and how should the powers the EP possesses be assessed? This article suggests a novel approach that focuses on inter-institutional micropolitics and the processes in which the EP obtained its powers rather than treaty changes at IGCs. Interinstitutional micropolitics are carried out by institutions and their members who act politically and shape the EU’s system from within. The EP’s successes in interinstitutional micropolitics are shaped by (1) its existing powers that need to be assessed in their differentiation; (2) the interparliamentary setting and the power co…
