Abstract In Drosophila, central nervous system (CNS) formation starts with the delamination from the neuroectoderm of about 30 neuroblasts (NBs) per hemisegment. They give rise to approximately 350 neurons and 30 glial cells during embryonic development. Understanding the mechanisms leading to cell fate specification and differentiation in the CNS requires the identification of the NB lineages. The embryonic lineages derived from 17 NBs of the ventral part of the neuroectoderm have previously been described (Bossing et al., 1996). AbstractSubdivision of the neuroectoderm into discrete gene expression domains is essential for the correct specification of neural stem cells (neuroblasts) during central nervous system development. Here, we extend our knowledge on dorsoventral (DV) patterning of the Drosophila brain and uncover novel genetic interactions that control expression of the evolutionary conserved homeobox genes ventral nervous system defective (vnd), intermediate neuroblasts defective (ind), and muscle segment homeobox (msh). Neurofibroma is a benign peripheral nerve sheath tumor. It is one of the most frequent tumors of neural origin and its presence is one of the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type I (NF-I). Neurofibromatosis type I is an autosomal dominantly inherited disease due to an alteration in the long arm of chromosome 17. About 50% of NF-I patients have no family history of the disease. Competence of blastomeres for the expression of molecular tissue markers is acquired by diverse mechanisms in the embryo of Platynereis (Annelida)

This paper is devoted to the role of cell divisions for the establishment of histospecificity in the embryo of the spiralian, Platynereis dumerilii (Annelida). We have incubated successive cleavage stages in cytochalasin B (CCB) and observed whether the cells thereafter were able to acquire the competence for expressing histospecific antigens of larval gland cells (labelled by the monoclonal antibody OI64) and of neural components of the ventral nerve cord (labelled by mAb OI7 or by testing acety1cholinesterase activity), respectively. Radiation therapy is a standard treatment for brain tumor patients. However, it comes with side effects, such as neurological deficits. While likely multi-factorial, the effect may in part be associated with the impact of radiation on the neurogenic niches. In the adult mammalian brain, the neurogenic niches are localized in the subventricular zone (SVZ) of the lateral ventricles and the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus, where the neural stem cells (NSCs) reside. Summary Peripheral neuromas can result in an unbearable neuropathic pain and functional impairment. Their treatment is still challenging, and their optimal management is to be defined. Experimental research still plays a major role, but - although numerous neuroma models have been proposed on different animals - there is still no single model recognised as being the reference. Study on the transient characteristic in the human visual system using masking experiments

In this paper the visual masking effect is interpreted on the basic of the transient characteristic in two dimensional neuronal networks. The study investigates the suitability of the effect for use as a measurement method. It is shown that the stimulus distribution in space can be scanned at different points in time and that various dynamic characteristic values of the system can be measured.
