Incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering in isomeric alcohols

1992

Abstract Incoherent quasi-elastic neutron scattering (IQENS) data on liquid isomeric alcohols normal-pentanol (n-PeOH) and 2-methyl-2-butanol (2M-2BuOH) and on their mixture are presented. The diffusive motion of protons, as a function of temperature, is analyzed in the framework of the random jump diffusion model. The temperature dependence of the parameters obtained confirms the more “fragile” behaviour of the more sterically hindered 2M-2BuOH with respect to that of the linear n-PeOH.

Observations of Forbush Decreases of cosmic ray electrons and positrons with the Dark Matter Particle Explorer

2021

The Forbush Decrease (FD) represents the rapid decrease of the intensities of charged particles accompanied with the coronal mass ejections (CMEs) or high-speed streams from coronal holes. It has been mainly explored with ground-based neutron monitors network which indirectly measure the integrated intensities of all species of cosmic rays by counting secondary neutrons produced from interaction between atmosphere atoms and cosmic rays. The space-based experiments can resolve the species of particles but the energy ranges are limited by the relative small acceptances except for the most abundant particles like protons and helium. Therefore, the FD of cosmic ray electrons and positrons have …

Background discrimination capabilities of a heat and ionization germanium cryogenic detector

2001

The discrimination capabilities of a 70 g heat and ionization Ge bolometer are studied. This first prototype has been used by the EDELWEISS Dark Matter experiment, installed in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane, for direct detection of WIMPs. Gamma and neutron calibrations demonstrate that this type of detector is able to reject more than 99.6% of the background while retaining 95% of the signal, provided that the background events distribution is not biased towards the surface of the Ge crystal. However, the 1.17 kg.day of data taken in a relatively important radioactive environment show an extra population slightly overlapping the signal. This background is likely due to interactions o…

Synthesis of quadruped-shaped polyfunctionalized o-carborane synthons

2011

[EN] o-Carborane derivatives with precisely defined patterns of substitution have been prepared from 8,9,10,12-I-4-1,2-closo-C2B10H8 by replacing the iodine atoms, bonded to four adjacent boron vertices in the cluster, with allyl, and subsequently 3-hydroxypropyl groups. The resulting structures, comprising four pendant arms and two reactive vertices located on opposite sides of a central o-carborane core, can be envisaged as versatile precursors for dendritic growth

Tuning the Structure of Galacturonate Hydrogels: External Gelation by Ca, Zn, or Fe Cationic Cross-Linkers

2019

International audience; We show here how the nature of various divalent cations M2+ (Ca2+, Zn2+, or Fe2+) influences the structure and mechanical properties of ionotropic polygalacturonate (polyGal) hydrogels designed by the diffusion of cations along one direction (external gelation). All hydrogels exhibit strong gradients of polyGal and cation concentrations, which are similar for all studied cations with a constant ratio R = [M2+]/[Gal] equal to 0.25, showing that every M2+ cation interacts with four galacturonate (Gal) units all along the gels. The regions of the hydrogels formed in the early stages of the gelation process are also similar for all cations and are homogeneous, with the s…

GW170817: Implications for the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background from Compact Binary Coalescences

2018

The LIGO Scientific and Virgo Collaborations have announced the first detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of two neutron stars. The merger rate of binary neutron stars estimated from this event suggests that distant, unresolvable binary neutron stars create a significant astrophysical stochastic gravitational-wave background. The binary neutron star background will add to the background from binary black holes, increasing the amplitude of the total astrophysical background relative to previous expectations. In the Advanced LIGO-Virgo frequency band most sensitive to stochastic backgrounds (near 25 Hz), we predict a total astrophysical background with amplitude $\Omega_{\rm…

The volatile inventory (F, Cl, Br, S, C) of magmatic apatite: An integrated analytical approach

2012

Abstract Apatite is ubiquitous in a wide range of magmatic rocks and its F–Cl–Br–S systematics can be used to decipher e.g., mixing processes within a magmatic complex and may give insights into fluid un-mixing and degassing processes during the emplacement and cooling of plutonic rocks. In this study, we analyzed a F-apatite (Durango, Mexico), a Cl-apatite (Odegarden, Norway) and apatites from five plutonic samples from the alkaline Mt. Saint Hilaire Complex (Canada) by means of Electron Microprobe Analysis (EPMA), Laser Ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS), Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS), pyrohydrolysis combined with ion chromatography, Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Ins…

Major and Trace Element Geochemistry of the European Kupferschiefer – An Evaluation of Analytical Techniques

2018

Simple and rapid techniques are needed for routine quantitative chemical bulk-rock analyses of Kupferschiefer, a black shale containing variable amounts of silicates, base metal sulphides, carbonates and an organic content of up to 30 weight percent. In this study, WD-XRF, TXRF, and ICP-OES of acid- as well as peroxide-digested samples were tested as potential techniques based on their availability and adaptability to analyse major (Si, Ti, Al, Mg, Ca, Fe, K, but also Cu, Zn, Pb) and selected trace (Ag, As, Ba, Co, Mo, Ni, V) element concentrations. Because of the absence of a suitable reference material, a comparative study was undertaken using instrumental neutron activation analysis to a…

Search for Subsolar-Mass Ultracompact Binaries in Advanced LIGO's First Observing Run

2018

We present the first Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo search for ultracompact binary systems with component masses between 0.2 $M_\odot$ - 1.0 $M_\odot$ using data taken between September 12, 2015 and January 19, 2016. We find no viable gravitational wave candidates. Our null result constrains the coalescence rate of monochromatic (delta function) distributions of non-spinning (0.2 $M_\odot$, 0.2 $M_\odot$) ultracompact binaries to be less than $1.0 \times 10^6 \text{Gpc}^{-3} \text{yr}^{-1}$ and the coalescence rate of a similar distribution of (1.0 $M_\odot$, 1.0 $M_\odot$) ultracompact binaries to be less than $1.9 \times 10^4 \text{Gpc}^{-3} \text{yr}^{-1}$ (at 90 percent confidence). GW170817: Measurements of Neutron Star Radii and Equation of State

2018

On 17 August 2017, the LIGO and Virgo observatories made the first direct detection of gravitational waves from the coalescence of a neutron star binary system. The detection of this gravitational-wave signal, GW170817, offers a novel opportunity to directly probe the properties of matter at the extreme conditions found in the interior of these stars. The initial, minimal-assumption analysis of the LIGO and Virgo data placed constraints on the tidal effects of the coalescing bodies, which were then translated to constraints on neutron star radii. Here, we expand upon previous analyses by working under the hypothesis that both bodies were neutron stars that are described by the same equation…
