Irradiation facility at the TRIGA Mainz for treatment of liver metastases
2009
Abstract The TRIGA Mark II reactor at the University of Mainz provides ideal conditions for duplicating BNCT treatment as performed in Pavia, Italy, in 2001 and 2003 [Pinelli, T., Zonta, A., Altieri, S., Barni, S., Braghieri, A., Pedroni, P., Bruschi, P., Chiari, P., Ferrari, C., Fossati, F., Nano, R., Ngnitejeu Tata, S., Prati, U., Ricevuti, G., Roveda, L., Zonta, C., 2002. Spin texture of time-reversal symmetry invariant surface states on W(110)
2016
AbstractWe find in the case of W(110) previously overlooked anomalous surface states having their spin locked at right angle to their momentum using spin-resolved momentum microscopy. In addition to the well known Dirac-like surface state with Rashba spin texture near the "Equation missing"-point, we observe a tilted Dirac cone with circularly shaped cross section and a Dirac crossing at 0.28 × "Equation missing" "Equation missing" within the projected bulk band gap of tungsten. This state has eye-catching similarities to the spin-locked surface state of a topological insulator. The experiments are fortified by a one-step photoemission calculation in its density-matrix formulation.
First observation of trapped high-field seeking ultracold neutron spin states
2011
Ultracold neutrons were stored in a volume, using a magnetic dipole field shutter. Radial confinement was provided by material walls. Low-field seeking neutrons were axially confined above the magnetic field. High-field seeking neutrons are trapped inside the magnetic field. They can systematically shift the measured neutron lifetime to lower values in experiments with magnetic confinement. ISSN:0370-2693 ISSN:0031-9163 ISSN:1873-2445
Neutron generator for BNCT based on high current ECR ion source with gyrotron plasma heating
2015
BNCT development nowadays is constrained by a progress in neutron sources design. Creation of a cheap and compact intense neutron source would significantly simplify trial treatments avoiding use of expensive and complicated nuclear reactors and accelerators. D-D or D-T neutron generator is one of alternative types of such sources for. A so-called high current quasi-gasdynamic ECR ion source with plasma heating by millimeter wave gyrotron radiation is suggested to be used in a scheme of D-D neutron generator in the present work. Ion source of that type was developed in the Institute of Applied Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia). It can produce deuteron ion beam…
Asymptotic normalization coefficients and halo radii of12B in the excited states
2017
We present the results of measurements and analysis of the differential cross sections of the 11 B(d, p )12 B reaction leading to formation of the 1+ ground state and the 0.953-MeV 2+ , 1.674-MeV 2− , 2.621-MeV 1− , 2.723-MeV 0+ , 3.389-MeV 3− excited states of 12 B at Ed = 21.5 MeV. The analysis of the data was carried out within the coupled-reaction-channels method for the direct neutron transfer and the Hauser-Feshbach formalism of the statistical compound-nucleus model. We deduced the spectroscopic factors, asymptotic normalization coefficients, and rms radii of the last neutron in all states studied. The existence of the neutron halos in the 1.674-MeV 2− and 2.621-MeV 1− states was fou…
Additional results from the first dedicated search for neutron–mirror neutron oscillations
2008
International audience; The existence of a mirror world holding a copy of our ordinary particle spectrum could lead to oscillations between the neutron (n) and its mirror partner (n′). Such oscillations could manifest themselves in storage experiments with ultracold neutrons whose storage lifetime would depend on the applied magnetic field. Here, extended details and measurements from the first dedicated experimental search for nn′ oscillations published in [G. Ban, K. Bodek, M. Daum, R. Henneck, S. Heule, M. Kasprzak, N. Khomutov, K. Kirch, S. Kistryn, A. Knecht, P. Knowles, M. Kuźniak, T. Lefort, A. Mtchedlishvili, O. Naviliat-Cuncic, C. Plonka, G. Quéméner, M. Rebetez, D. Rebreyend, S. R…
Neutron to mirror-neutron oscillations in the presence of mirror magnetic fields
2009
We performed ultracold neutron (UCN) storage measurements to search for additional losses due to neutron (n) to mirror-neutron (n') oscillations as a function of an applied magnetic field B. In the presence of a mirror magnetic field B', UCN losses would be maximal for B = B'. We did not observe any indication for nn' oscillations and placed a lower limit on the oscillation time of tau_{nn'} > 12.0 s at 95% C.L. for any B' between 0 and 12.5 uT.
Absorber materials for low-energy neutrons—Theoretical and experimental studies
2012
Abstract Absorber materials for low-energy neutrons are studied in the theoretical framework of quantum mechanics with a complex potential. Analytical expressions and numerical calculations of the neutron reflectivity for perpendicular and isotropic motion towards a surface for four different material classes are presented. Comparative experimental studies of four absorber materials have been carried out: Polyethylene, titanium, boron-10 and lithium stearate. In a quasi-storage experiment with ultracold neutrons the latter material features the highest absorption property.
Towards a new measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment
2009
International audience; The effort towards a new measurement of the neutron electric dipole moment (nEDM) at the Paul Scherrer Institut's (PSI) new high intensity source of ultracold neutrons (UCN) is described. The experimental technique relies on Ramsey's method of separated oscillatory fields, using UCN in vacuum with the apparatus at ambient temperature. In the first phase, R&D towards the upgrade of the RAL/Sussex/ILL apparatus is being performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL). In the second phase the apparatus, moved from ILL to PSI, will allow an improvement in experimental sensitivity by a factor of 5. In the third phase, a new spectrometer should gain another order of magnitud…
