Today ancient Noto is a medieval archaeological site, yet to be discovered. After the 1693 earthquake, the ancient city of Noto, in the middle of the Baroque period, was rebuilt in another place and the ancient city was abandoned. The first excavation campaign in ancient Noto by Paolo Orsi dates back to the period between 1894 and 1896. In the following years there will be other excavation campaigns, in which other architectural and sculptural relics will be found. They are today part of the collection of the Civic Museum. Jacopo Salemi, architetto e scultore proveniente dalla città di Castrogiovanni, il giorno 8 novembre 1563 a Catania, sottoscrive un contratto con la congregazione dei monaci benedettini per la costruzione di un modello in legno della chiesa San Nicolò l’Arena che si stava costruendo dal 1558 sul confine ovest della città. Il documento che regola l’incarico tra Salemi e i benedettini è datato 24 febbraio 1564 ed è custodito presso l’Archivio di Stato di Catania; tale documento rivela che il modello realizzato da Salemi sarebbe stato valutato da due esperti incaricati provenienti dalla città di Messina. This contribution aims to test the efficiency of a research methodology based on an interdisciplinary approach. This is to be achieved through the case study of the disappeared church of S. Nicolò alla Kalsa in Palermo, an imposing medieval building dating back to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and demolished after an earthquake in 1823. The reconstruction of the original configuration of this disappeared monument was achieved through traditional research sources and tools in the field of architectural and urban history, as well as architectural drawing, relying on both traditional and up-to-date digital technologies. Il contributo affronta lo studio di un monumento scomparso della città di Palermo, la chiesa parrocchiale di San Nicolò alla Kalsa, che aveva rivestito un ruolo significativo nel contesto urbano medievale e della prima età moderna, conoscendo successivamente un progressivo abbandono e degrado fino alla sua demolizione dopo il 1823, e ne propone una ricostruzione virtuale attraverso l’elaborazione di un modello 3D. The sarcophagus that holds the bones of Lucca Palizzi,wife of Giovanni Chiaromonte the Elder, is located into the church of Santa Maria della Catena, built between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century near the ancient port of Cala, in Palermo. The sarcophagus is placed along the left wall of the choir, on a modern base; the sources historians say that the original site was the church of S. Nicolò alla Kalsa, where Chiaromonte himself, starting from 1306, built the Chapel of the SS. Crucifix as a family mausoleum.
