Trapping of Different Lipase Conformers in Water-Restricted Environments
1996
Based on a recently reported strategy to rationally activate lipolytic enzymes for use in nonaqueous media [Mingarro, I., et al. (1995) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 92, 3308-3312], we compared the behavior in water-restricted environments of activated vs nonactivated forms of different lipases toward their natural substrates, triacylglycerols. To this end, nine lipases from varied origins (mammalian, fungal, and bacterial) were assayed using simple acidolyses as nonaqueous model reactions. The experimental results for several (though not all) lipases, discussed in the light of current structural and functional information, were collectively consistent with a model where, depending on the "…
Towards science education for sustainable development in developing countries : a study of Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria
2006
Kestävän kehityksen edistäminen on yhteinen tavoite maailmanlaajuisesti.
Structure of Aspergillus niger epoxide hydrolase at 1.8 A resolution: implications for the structure and function of the mammalian microsomal class o…
2000
AbstractBackground: Epoxide hydrolases have important roles in the defense of cells against potentially harmful epoxides. Conversion of epoxides into less toxic and more easily excreted diols is a universally successful strategy. A number of microorganisms employ the same chemistry to process epoxides for use as carbon sources. Results: The X-ray structure of the epoxide hydrolase from Aspergillus niger was determined at 3.5 Å resolution using the multiwavelength anomalous dispersion (MAD) method, and then refined at 1.8 Å resolution. There is a dimer consisting of two 44 kDa subunits in the asymmetric unit. Each subunit consists of an α/β hydrolase fold, and a primarily helical lid over the…

Increase of trans-resveratrol in typical Sicilian wine using β-Glucosidase from various sources
2008
β-Glucosidase (EC 3.2.1.21) (β-G) from different sources were tested to increase the trans-resveratrol in some Sicilian wines by hydrolysing resveratrol glucoside. β-G from Aspergillus niger mould was tested as a crude and purified enzyme, and compared with the same enzyme from Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. Specific purification served to eliminate collateral enzyme activities so that β-G could be used simply and economically. Aspergillus niger β-G produced trans-resveratrol increases of up to 75%, with no change in physico-chemical properties and bouquet, and an increase in health and nutritional properties. S. cerevisiae β-G raised free-terpenol levels, but impaired wine colour due to a…
Application of information and communication technology for internationalization of Nigerian small- and medium-sized enterprises
2019
Information and communication technology (ICT) has fundamentally transformed business transactions. While its uses have become ubiquitous in the advanced economies, emerging and developing economies are still struggling with the mode and manner of the deployment of ICT for business. Thus, this study seeks to investigate how small‐ and medium‐sized enterprises (SMEs) utilize ICT in Nigeria for business internationalization. To achieve the goal of the study, a mixed‐method was employed. A questionnaire was administered to 265 people consisting of SMEs staff, managers, and owners. Similarly, interviews were conducted with seven SME decision makers. Findings revealed that Nigerian SMEs used ICT…
The onset of the rainy season and farmers’ sowing strategy for pearl millet cultivation in Southwest Niger
2011
A multi-year (2004-2009) field survey of on-farm sowing practices in 10 villages located in south-west Niger close to Niamey, is analysed to investigate the relationships (i) between rainfall and the sowing date of pearl millet and the risk of sowing failure, (ii) between sowing and meteorological/agro-climatic onset dates, (iii) between sowing/onset dates, and simulated and observed yield/biomass at the end of the season. Even if some villages sow without any synchronous or anterior rainfall, most parcels (73% out of the 1551 available cases) are sown during and just after a 2-day wet spell receiving at least 10 mm. In fact, there is a strong correlation (r = 0.82-0.95 depending on onset d…
Epidemiology of depressive disorders in people living with hypertension in Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis
2020
ObjectivesBetter knowledge of epidemiology of depressive disorders in people living with hypertension can help to implement pertinent strategies to address its burden. The objective was to estimate the prevalence of depressive disorders and symptoms in people living with hypertension in Africa.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.Data sourcesPubMed, EMBASE, African Index Medicus, African Journals OnLine were searched up to 31 January 2020, regardless of the language of publication.Eligibility criteriaWe included studies conducted among adult patients with hypertension (≥18 years) living in Africa and reporting the prevalence of depressive disorders and symptoms.Data extraction and synt…
