Recurrent On-Duty Sleepiness and Alertness Management Strategies in Long-Haul Airline Pilots

Introduction We examined whether long-haul airline pilots without recurrent on-duty sleepiness obtain more prior sleep and use more effective in-flight alertness management strategies than their colleagues with recurrent on-duty sleepiness. Methods There were 51 pilots who flew at least twice from Helsinki to Asia. Of them, 44 flew at least twice back to Helsinki following 1 local night. On-duty sleepiness was measured by the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), alertness management strategies by a diary, and sleep by a diary and activity monitor. Pilots who rated KSS ≥ 7 on each, some, or none of the flights were classified as "regularly", "sometimes", and "never" sleepy, respectively. This …

Objective To study associations of menopausal symptoms with cardiometabolic risk factors. Study design A cross-sectional and longitudinal study of a representative population sample of 1393 women aged 47–55 years with a sub-sample of 298 followed for four years. The numbers of vasomotor, psychological, somatic or pain, and urogenital menopausal symptoms were ascertained at baseline through self-report. Their associations with cardiometabolic risk factors were studied using linear regression and linear mixed-effect models. This study examined the associations of work schedules and spousal satisfaction among Finnish (n = 347), Dutch (n = 304) and British (n = 337) parents. In addition to comparing parents with nonstandard schedule with parents in regular day work, the study examined separately the roles played in spousal satisfaction of morning, evening, night and weekend work and other working time-related variables (working hours, changes in and influence over one’s work schedules and spouse’s work schedule). Dynamiczna metoda przesunięć udziałów uwzględnia zmienność wag w kolejnych okresach. Metoda ta została zaproponowana w 1988 przez Barffa i Knighta. Ideą metody jest przeprowadzenie w sposób rekurencyjny obliczeń dla każdych dwóch kolejnych okresów, aby ostatecznie dokonać agregacji wyników cząstkowych. Dodatkowo metoda ta pozwala na określenie tendencji w zakresie przemian gospodarki regionalnej. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie analizy składników zmiany i możliwości jej wykorzystania do diagnostyki potencjału produkcyjnego rolnictwa regionu, a w szczególności wskazanie obiektów wyspecjalizowanych oraz charakteru zmian strukturalnych w zakresie badanego zjawiska.
The Role of Excited Oxygen Molecules in the Formation of the Secondary Ozone Layer at 87 to 97 km

The secondary ozone layer is located at elevations of 87 to 97 km in the upper mesosphere – lower thermosphere. It overlaps with the ionospheric D-layer. Daytime intensive UV radiation is dissociating O2 molecules to O atoms and photoexcitating O2 molecules up to 11.07eV level. Ozone photolysis between the wavelengths of 118.7–121.6 nm produces three oxygen atoms from one ozone molecule. Collision reactions of O2(B3 Σu —) and O2(X3 Σg —, υ≥26) with O2(X3 Σg —, υ=0) produce additional oxygen atoms.
