Local minimizers and gamma-convergence for nonlocal perimeters in Carnot groups

2020

We prove the local minimality of halfspaces in Carnot groups for a class of nonlocal functionals usually addressed as nonlocal perimeters. Moreover, in a class of Carnot groups in which the De Giorgi's rectifiability Theorem holds, we provide a lower bound for the $\Gamma$-liminf of the rescaled energy in terms of the horizontal perimeter.

Variational differential inclusions without ellipticity condition

2020

The paper sets forth a new type of variational problem without any ellipticity or monotonicity condition. A prototype is a differential inclusion whose driving operator is the competing weighted $(p,q)$-Laplacian $-\Delta_p u+\mu\Delta_q u$ with $\mu\in \mathbb{R}$. Local and nonlocal boundary value problems fitting into this nonstandard setting are examined.

From magnetic to nonlinear optical switches in spin-crossover complexes

2013

ISI Document Delivery No.: 109TF Times Cited: 0 Cited Reference Count: 173 Lacroix, Pascal G. Malfant, Isabelle Real, Jose-Antonio Rodriguez, Vincent Wiley-v c h verlag gmbh Weinheim Si; Various attempts to combine magnetic and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties in a molecule are reviewed, with a special focus on the possibility of interplay between the magnetic component and the quadratic (proportional to E-2) NLO response. This multidisciplinary research leads to the idea of spin-crossover-induced (SCO-induced) NLO switching and is evaluated at the synthetic level, with insights provided by computational chemistry. Combining conjunctive rule extraction with diffusion maps for network intrusion detection

2013

Network security and intrusion detection are important in the modern world where communication happens via information networks. Traditional signature-based intrusion detection methods cannot find previously unknown attacks. On the other hand, algorithms used for anomaly detection often have black box qualities that are difficult to understand for people who are not algorithm experts. Rule extraction methods create interpretable rule sets that act as classifiers. They have mostly been combined with already labeled data sets. This paper aims to combine unsupervised anomaly detection with rule extraction techniques to create an online anomaly detection framework. Unsupervised anomaly detectio…

MCD: Overcoming the Data Download Bottleneck in Data Centers

2013

The data download problem in data centers describes the increasingly common task of coordinated loading of identical data to a large number of nodes. Data download is seen as a significant problem in exascale HPC applications. Uncoor-dinated reading from a central file server creates contention at the file server and its network interconnect. We propose and evaluation a reliable multicast based approach to solve the data download problem. The MCD system builds a logical multi-rooted tree based on the physical network topology and uses the logical view for a two-phase approach. In the first phase, the data is multicasted to all nodes. In the second phase, the logical tree is used for an effi…

The promise of spintronics for unconventional computing

2021

Novel computational paradigms may provide the blueprint to help solving the time and energy limitations that we face with our modern computers, and provide solutions to complex problems more efficiently (with reduced time, power consumption and/or less device footprint) than is currently possible with standard approaches. Spintronics offers a promising basis for the development of efficient devices and unconventional operations for at least three main reasons: (i) the low-power requirements of spin-based devices, i.e., requiring no standby power for operation and the possibility to write information with small dynamic energy dissipation, (ii) the strong nonlinearity, time nonlocality, and/o…

First-Principles Simulation of Substitutional Defects in Perovskites

2000

The results of supercell calculations of electronic structure and related properties of substitutional impurities in perovskite oxides KNbO3 and KTaO3 are discussed. For Fe impurities in KNbO3, the results obtained in the local density approximation (LDA) and in the LDA+U approach (that allows an ad hoc treatment of nonlocality in exchange-correlation) are compared, and different impurity charge configurations are discussed. The study of off-centre Li defects in incipient ferroelectric KTaO3 have been done by the appropriately parametrized Intermediate Neglect of Differential Overlap (INDO) method. The interaction energies of two off-centre impurities in different relative configurations ar…

A symmetric nonlocal damage theory

2003

The paper presents a thermodynamically consistent formulation for nonlocal damage models. Nonlocal models have been recognized as a theoretically clean and computationally efficient approach to overcome the shortcomings arising in continuum media with softening. The main features of the presented formulation are: (i) relations derived by the free energy potential fully complying with nonlocal thermodynamic principles; (ii) nonlocal integral operator which is self-adjoint at every point of the solid, including zones near to the solid's boundary; (iii) capacity of regularizing the softening ill-posed continuum problem, restoring a meaningful nonlocal boundary value problem. In the present app…

Influence of spatial delay on the modulational instability in a composite system with a controllable nonlinearity.

2017

A theoretical investigation of the modulational instability (MI) in a composite system with a nonlocal response function is presented. A composite system of silver nanoparticles in acetone is chosen, whose nonlinearity can be delicately varied by controlling the volume fraction of the constituents, thus enabling the possibility of nonlinearity management. A pump-probe counterpropagation configuration has been assumed, and the interplay between the competing nonlinearities and the nonlocalities in the MI dynamics is systematically explored. A different class of nonlocalities have been considered, and the study reveals that the nonlocality critically depends on the kind of nonlocal function. …

Analysis and approximation of one-dimensional scalar conservation laws with general point constraints on the flux

2016

We introduce and analyze a class of models with nonlocal point constraints for traffic flow through bottlenecks, such as exits in the context of pedestrians traffic and reduction of lanes on a road under construction in vehicular traffic. Constraints are defined based on data collected from non-local in space and/or in time observations of the flow. We propose a theoretical analysis and discretization framework that permits to include different data acquisition strategies; a numerical comparison is provided. Nonlocal constraint allows to model, e.g., the irrational behavior (" panic ") near the exit observed in dense crowds and the capacity drop at tollbooth in vehicular traffic. Existence …
