Establishing Video Game Genres Using Data-Driven Modeling and Product Databases

2015

Establishing genres is the first step toward analyzing games and how the genre landscape evolves over the years. We use data-driven modeling that distils genres from textual descriptions of a large collection of games. We analyze the evolution of game genres from 1979 till 2010. Our results indicate that until 1990, there have been many genres competing for dominance, but thereafter sport-racing, strategy, and action have become the most prevalent genres. Moreover, we find that games vary to a great extent as to whether they belong mostly to one genre or to a combination of several genres. We also compare the results of our data-driven model with two product databases, Metacritic and Mobyga…

El coneixement i l'ús de les aplicacions educatives dels estudiants universitaris d'Espanya i la República Txeca

2020

Technological evolution has led to many changes at both professional and academic levels. The inclusion of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has caused dizzying changes in the different contexts of life (educational, professional, social). More and more applications are being downloaded by users to their mobile devices, both for entertainment and training. For this reason, this study is based on the need to assess the knowledge and attitude of university students towards downloading existing educational applications. In this way, the use and frequency of these tools in the teaching-learning process of the students will be analyzed. In order to carry out this study, the quanti…

Data-driven decision support to reduce "driving-under the influence of alcohol" offenses

2018

Extracting valuable knowledge from data to support decision making is a widely practiced trend. Data-driven decision support (DDDS) provides insight for decision makers by exploring and extracting underlying patterns within a dataset. This thesis covers the process of DDDS in reducing driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) offenses by introducing proposed prison sentences. In this thesis, DDDS is applied to a DUI dataset by analyzing patterns in the dataset and by introducing proposed prison sentences for offenders to reduce the number of DUI cases. Background theories in data mining, machine learning, optimization and decision science that are related to the thesis project are also c…

PIRACY REVISITED: EXPLORING MUSIC USERS IN THE AGE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPENDENCY

2019

This paper empirically investigates and characterizes users of recorded music, both downloaders and purchasers. To this end we analyse the role of the variables defining the different segments of music users. In doing so, we have considered two main traits influencing the use of music. First, objective variables such as demographics, music consumption habits, music genres and technology. Second, subjective variables such as motives and attitudes towards piracy. Using data from a personal survey, subsequent latent class and fuzzy analyses show that while the former characteristics are relevant in those getting music for free from the Internet, the latter don´t pay any special part, contrary …

On the best Lipschitz extension problem for a discrete distance and the discrete ∞-Laplacian

2012

Abstract This paper concerns the best Lipschitz extension problem for a discrete distance that counts the number of steps. We relate this absolutely minimizing Lipschitz extension with a discrete ∞-Laplacian problem, which arises as the dynamic programming formula for the value function of some e -tug-of-war games. As in the classical case, we obtain the absolutely minimizing Lipschitz extension of a datum f by taking the limit as p → ∞ in a nonlocal p -Laplacian problem.

Scientific power in the Spanish press during the Pandemic : a portrait of new leaders while explaining its risk

2021

This work is based on the mediatisation of society theory, which establishes more attached importance and the presence of the mass media as mediators in various social processes, as well as on Production Studies, that analyse creative skills to draw an audience, to apply these theories to the media representation of the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective is to analyse how the generalist media have represented male/female scientists, who have become social benchmarks during the first COVID-19 wave in Spain. Our initial hypothesis considers that the purpose of the mediatisation of scientific discourse was to contribute answers to, and to keep society calm, in an uncertainty context. By content …

Preserving entanglement and nonlocality in solid-state qubits by dynamical decoupling

2014

In this paper we study how to preserve entanglement and nonlocality under dephasing produced by classical noise with large low-frequency components, as $1/f$ noise, by Dynamical Decoupling techniques. We first show that quantifiers of entanglement and nonlocality satisfy a closed relation valid for two independent qubits locally coupled to a generic environment under pure dephasing and starting from a general class of initial states. This result allows to assess the efficiency of pulse-based dynamical decoupling for protecting nonlocal quantum correlations between two qubits subject to pure-dephasing local random telegraph and $1/f$-noise. We investigate the efficiency of an "entanglement m…

Explaining User Experience in Mobile Gaming Applications: An fsQCA Approach

2019

Purpose In the complex ecosystem of mobile applications multiple factors have been used to explain users’ behavior, without though focusing on how different combinations of variables may affect user behavior. The purpose of this paper is to show how price value, game content quality, positive and negative emotions, gender and gameplay time interact with each other to predict high intention to download mobile games. Design/methodology/approach Building on complexity theory, the authors present a conceptual model followed by research propositions. The propositions are empirically validated through configurational analysis, employing fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) on 531 a…

Ultra-nonlocality in density functional theory for photo-emission spectroscopy.

2014

We derive an exact expression for the photo-current of photo-emission spectroscopy using time-dependent current density functional theory (TDCDFT). This expression is given as an integral over the Kohn-Sham spectral function renormalized by effective potentials that depend on the exchange-correlation kernel of current density functional theory. We analyze in detail the physical content of this expression by making a connection between the density-functional expression and the diagrammatic expansion of the photo-current within many-body perturbation theory. We further demonstrate that the density functional expression does not provide us with information on the kinetic energy distribution of…

Nonlocal properties of dynamical three-body Casimir-Polder forces

2005

We consider the three-body Casimir-Polder interaction between three atoms during their dynamical self-dressing. We show that the time-dependent three-body Casimir-Polder interaction energy displays nonlocal features related to quantum properties of the electromagnetic field and to the nonlocality of spatial field correlations. We discuss the measurability of this intriguing phenomenon and its relation with the usual concept of stationary three-body forces.
