Esa Religión en armas tenía ahora que replantear sus ideales caballerescos en el nuevo contexto de la reforma protestante y de la renovación católica. La respuesta de los Hospitalarios fue sin embargo parcial y tardía al revés de su representación como miembros de una gloriosa Religión. Son testimonios de esta dialéctica entre práctica y teoría por ejemplo un libro encomiástico publicado en 1619 en Italia y España y unas instrucciones manuscritas de finales del siglo XVII destinadas a los capellanes que prestaban su asistencia religiosa en las galeras de la Orden. Esas obras ofrecen una imagen eficaz del contraste entre la retórica del binomio constituido por la sangre noble y el valor militar (hasta el extremo del martirio en defensa de la fe) por un lado y la efectiva conducta de hombres cuya inadecuada formación y práctica religiosas no estaban a la altura de su misión por el otro.

Separation of Nanoparticles by Gel Electrophoresis According to Size and Shape

We demonstrate the separation of gold and silver nanoparticles according to their size and shape by agarose gel electrophoresis after coating them with a charged polymer layer. The separation is monitored optically using the size- and shape-dependent plasmon resonance of noble metal particles and confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Electrophoretic mobilities are quantitatively explained by a model based on the Henry formula, providing a theoretical framework for predicting gel mobilities of polymer coated nanoparticles.

Here we describe a simple, powerful technique based on the laser ablation of a target immersed in a water solution of a metal salt. With this method, nanoparticles of different metals and alloys can be processed very quickly. High gas pressure: An innovative method for the inactivation of dried bacterial spores

In this article, an original non-thermal process to inactivate dehydrated bacterial spores is described. The use of gases such as nitrogen or argon as transmission media under high isostatic pressure led to an inactivation of over 2 logs CFU/g of Bacillus subtilis spores at 430 MPa, room temperature, for a 1 min treatment. A major requirement for the effectiveness of the process resided in the highly dehydrated state of the spores. Only a water activity below 0.3 led to substantial inactivation. The solubility of the gas in the lipid components of the spore and its diffusion properties was essential to inactivation. Noble-gas bubbles in metals: Molecular-dynamics simulations and positron states.

A theoretical treatment of atomic structure and positron states in noble-gas bubbles in metals is presented. The Al-He and Cu-Kr systems are considered as specific examples. For large bubbles (radii above a few tens of angstroms) a calculational scheme is developed combining molecular-dynamics results for the metal--noble-gas interface with positron calculations. It is demonstrated that a positron is trapped at the surface of a noble-gas bubble, i.e., at the metal-gas interface. The annihilation rate with metal electrons is similar to that at a clean surface, while simultaneously there is a significant annihilation rate with gas-atom electrons.
