The aim of this study was to investigate comparative effects of vitamin A deficiency on respiratory activity and structural integrity in liver and heart mitochondria. Male rats were fed a liquid control diet (control rats) or a liquid vitamin A-deficient diet (vitamin A-deficient rats) for 50 days. One group of vitamin-A deficient rats was refed a control diet for 15 days (vitamin A-recovered rats). Defects of NADH:coenzyme Q oxidoreductase (complex I) of mitochondria have been described in many congenital and acquired diseases. Administration of coenzyme Q (CoQ, ubiquinone) has been shown to benefit patients with some of these diseases. However, the mechanisms by which CoQ exerts the therapeutic effects are not clearly understood. A reason could be the lack of saturation of CoQ, in kinetic terms, for complex I activity. However, this hypothesis has not been proved in vivo because of the difficulty to incorporate CoQ into the mitochondrial membranes. Moreover, fractional differential inequalities are useful to establish the properties of solutions of different problems in biomathematics and flow phenomena. In the present work, we are concerned with the nonexistence of global solutions to a higher order fractional differential inequality with a nonlinearity involving Caputo fractional derivative. Molecules with complex internal structure in time-dependent periodic potentials are studied by using short Rubinstein-Duke model polymers as an example. We extend our earlier work on transport in stochastically varying potentials to cover also deterministic potential switching mechanisms, energetic efficiency and non-uniform charge distributions. We also use currents in the non-equilibrium steady state to identify the dominating mechanisms that lead to polymer transportation and analyze the evolution of the macroscopic state (e.g., total and head-to-head lengths) of the polymers. beta-Ionone, an aroma compound exhibiting flower notes, can be obtained from beta-carotene in a cooxidation system utilizing xanthine oxidase-generated reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS have to be controlled as, although they can give rise to beta-ionone, they may also degrade it. In this work, the biotransformation of beta-carotene into beta-ionone was investigated in systems containing variable proportions of decane to extract beta-ionone before degradation. This article is focused on the seasonal variation in the contents of 5-methoxycanthin-6-one from the leaves of Zanthoxylum chiloperone (Rutaceae). Based on the pharmacological interest presented by 5-methoxycanthin-6-one, its seasonal variation in Z. chiloperone leaves was analysed in order to determine the best time for harvesting, optimising the 5-methoxycanthin-6-one content. The seasonal dynamics of canthinone alkaloids can be the key to improve the isolation from natural sustainable sources, such as leaves. Complementarily, this study describes the phytochemistry of leaf from this Ruraceae species.

International audience; The aim of this study was to monitor the changes in the properties of palm sugar syrup produced by an open pan and a vacuum evaporator at 70°C and 80°C during storage under 4°C and room temperature (30°C) for 12 months at monthly intervals. During storage, Maillard reaction took place in samples stored under 4°C lower than those stored under 30°C. This was shown by lower a* values, intermediate browning products (IBP), browning intensity (BI) and HMF content, and higher L* values, fructose, glucose and free amino group contents during storage for 12 months.
