An Overview of Functionalized Graphene Nanomaterials for Advanced Applications
2021
Interest in the development of graphene-based materials for advanced applications is growing, because of the unique features of such nanomaterials and, above all, of their outstanding versatility, which enables several functionalization pathways that lead to materials with extremely tunable properties and architectures. This review is focused on the careful examination of relationships between synthetic approaches currently used to derivatize graphene, main properties achieved, and target applications proposed. Use of functionalized graphene nanomaterials in six engineering areas (materials with enhanced mechanical and thermal performance, energy, sensors, biomedical, water treatment, and c…
The Application of Supercritical Fluids Technology to Recover Healthy Valuable Compounds from Marine and Agricultural Food Processing By-Products: A …
2021
Food by-products contain a remarkable source of bioactive molecules with many benefits for humans; therefore, their exploitation can be an excellent opportunity for the food sector. Moreover, the revalorization of these by-products to produce value-added compounds is considered pivotal for sustainable growth based on a circular economy. Traditional extraction technologies have several drawbacks mainly related to the consumption of hazardous organic solvents, and the high temperatures maintained for long extraction periods which cause the degradation of thermolabile compounds as well as a low extraction efficiency of desired compounds. In this context, supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) ha…
Many-body Green's function theory for electron-phonon interactions: ground state properties of the Holstein dimer
2015
We study ground-state properties of a two-site, two-electron Holstein model describing two molecules coupled indirectly via electron-phonon interaction by using both exact diagonalization and self-consistent diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory. The Hartree and self-consistent Born approximations used in the present work are studied at different levels of self-consistency. The governing equations are shown to exhibit multiple solutions when the electron-phonon interaction is sufficiently strong whereas at smaller interactions only a single solution is found. The additional solutions at larger electron-phonon couplings correspond to symmetry-broken states with inhomogeneous electron de…
Revaluation of the clinical and metabolic behavior of GHD children during GH treatment according to newly proposed note 39 of the Italian Medicines A…
2015
Background The newly proposed note 39 of the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) revisited the diagnostic criteria of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) in children and, applying it, a percentage of children previously diagnosed as GHD may have received a wrong diagnosis and a unnecessary treatment, with potential clinical implications. Aim To evaluate the clinical and metabolic behavior of GH-treated children according to the new criteria of GHD diagnosis. Subjects and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical and metabolic data of 310 prepubertal children (220 M, 90 F, age 10.8 ± 2.9 yrs) with short stature admitted to our section of Endocrinology during the years 2005-2014, having at least …
Citronellal and citronellol as growth inhibitors of freshwater cyanobacteria
2014
Cyanobacteria possess a very high tolerance relative to environmental factors, so they can be found in almost every aquatic habitat: oceans, freshwaters, hot springs, soils and bare rocks. Nowadays these microorganisms are thought to cause the formation of intensive blooms which result from water eutrophication. In order to suppress blooms in aquatic ecosystems, it is important to limit the growth of blue-green algae, preferably using environment-friendly procedures. In this article we present how two aliphatic, natural monoterpenes: citronellal and citronellol, influence the growth of cyanobacteria. Three species of freshwater cyanobacteria: Anabaena sp., Nodularia moravica and Chroococcus…

A synergic nanoantioxidant based on covalently modified halloysite–trolox nanotubes with intra-lumen loaded quercetin
2016
We describe the preparation and properties of the first example of a synergic nanoantioxidant, obtained by different functionalizations of the external surface and the inner lumen of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs). Trolox, a mimic of natural α-tocopherol, was selectively grafted on the HNT external surface; while quercetin, a natural polyphenolic antioxidant, was loaded into the inner lumen to afford a bi-functional nanoantioxidant, HNT–Trolox/Que, which was investigated for its reactivity with transient peroxyl radicals and a persistent 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH˙) radical in comparison with the corresponding mono-functional analogues HNT–Trolox and HNT/Que. Both HNT–Trolox and HNT/Q…
Covalently modified halloysite clay nanotubes: synthesis, properties, biological and medical applications
2017
Halloysite (HNT) is a promising natural nanosized tubular clay mineral that has many important uses in different industrial fields. It is naturally occurring, biocompatible, and available in thousands of tons at low cost. As a consequence of a hollow cavity, HNT is mainly used as nanocontainer for the controlled release of several chemicals. Chemical modification of both surfaces (inner lumen and outer surface) is a strategy to tune the nanotube's properties. Specifically, chemical modification of HNT surfaces generates a nanoarchitecture with targeted affinity through outer surface functionalization and drug transport ability from functionalization of the nanotube lumen. The primary focus …
Very strong −N–X+⋯−O–N+ halogen bonds
2016
A new (-)N-X(+)(-)O-N(+) paradigm for halogen bonding is established by using an oxygen atom as an unusual halogen bond acceptor. The strategy yielded extremely strong halogen bonded complexes with very high association constants characterized in either CDCl3 or acetone-d6 solution by (1)H NMR titrations and in the solid-state by single crystal X-ray analysis. The obtained halogen bond interactions, RXB, in the solid-state are found to be in the order of strong hydrogen bonds, viz. RXB ≈ RHB.
