Art and Science in Word and Image: Exploration and Discovery
2019
International audience; Art and Science in Word and Image investigates the theme of ‘riddles of form’, exploring how discovery and innovation have functioned inter-dependently between art, literature and the sciences. Using the impact of evolutionary biologist D’Arcy Thompson’s On Growth and Form on Modernist practices as springboard into the theme, contributors consider engagements with mysteries of natural form in painting, photography, fiction, etc., as well as theories about cosmic forces, and other fields of knowledge and enquiry. Hence the collection also deals with topics including cultural inscriptions of gardens and landscapes, deconstructions of received history through word and i…

2020
Tackling the question of the presence of song in Aragon’s novels may seem paradoxical or unimportant, if one were to limit their analysis to the numerous poems by Aragon to be put into music by contemporary singers – or today’s composers. Musical adaptations of his texts deal with an era of his production which begins in the 1930s, when Aragon advocates for song, particularly with the creation of the Maison de la Culture – and also a moment when he becomes a novelist. The analysis of some textual phenomena, in parallel with the references to songs in his novels, should allow us to grasp the kind of poetic realism at work in Aragon’s productions.
2022
Andrea Camilleri used to say he regretted that his novels were seen by his readers as more entertaining than thought-provoking. For his work carries a militant message and far-left ideas. In his narratives, the author deconstructs traditional schemes and definitions and proposes to read reality through other prisms. Thus, in his two novels Il ladro di merendine and L’altro capo del filo, Camilleri deconstructs and redefines the concept of ‘clandestinity’, both through inventio and through symbolic objects. The boundary shifts: it no longer separates the licit from the illicit but the intimate from the visible.

First-Hand Becomes Second-Hand: André Brink's A Dry White Season
2009
This paper offers a reading of André Brink's novel A Dry White Season in relation to his own essay The Novel:. Language and Narrative From Cervantes to Calvino. The aim is to demonstrate that Brink's theory can help highlight aspects of his apartheid writings which have often been neglected. The paper explores, in particular, the metafictional features of a novel more famous for its committed nature than for its self-reflexivity
Basic processes in interference paradigms
2021
The aim of the present thesis is to investigate the source of Stroop (interference) effects in weak bilinguals (Experiment 1) and in early language learning (Experiment 2-6). Participants performed a bilingual colour-word Stroop task with intermixed first language (L1) and second language (L2) words. The typical finding from the Stroop literature is slower and less accurate responding when the word and colour are incongruent (e.g., “red” in blue) relative to congruent (e.g., “red” in red). Interestingly, this congruency effect occurs for the colour words from both L1 and L2. What produces this congruency effect? That is, what is the source of the conflict produced by incongruent colour word…
