Annealing of radiation induced oxygen deficient point defects in amorphous silicon dioxide: evidence for a distribution of the reaction activation en…
2011
The selective annealing of point defects with different activation energies is studied, by performing sequences of thermal treatments on gamma irradiated silica samples in the temperature range 300-450 °C. Our experiments show that the dependence on time of the concentration of two irradiation induced point defects in silica, named ODC(II) (standing for oxygen deficient centre II) and the E(γ)(') centre, at a given temperature depends on the thermal history of the sample for both of the centres studied; moreover in the long time limit this concentration reaches an asymptotic value that depends on the treatment temperature alone. These results suggest the existence of a distribution of the a…
High photodegradation and antibacterial activity of BN–Ag/TiO 2 composite nanofibers under visible light
2018
To develop material with good photocatalytic properties for organic compound degradation and bacterial removal, we produced Ag/TiO2 and BN–Ag/TiO2 composite nanofibers that included controlled amounts of boron nitride (BN) nanosheets and silver (Ag). After annealing at 500 °C under air, we used scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer–Emmet–Teller analysis, X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-visible reflectance spectroscopy and room temperature photoluminescence to investigate the morphological, structural and optical properties of all samples. The photocatalytic tests using methylene blue under visible light, in r…
Chemical constituents of the root wood of Erythrina sacleuxii and determination of the absolute configuration of suberectin
2020
Phytochemical investigation on the root wood of Erythrina sacleuxii (Leguminosae) led to the isolation of nine secondary metabolites (1-9). Compound 1 was isolated from the genus Erythrina for the first time. The pure compounds were identified on the basis of comprehensive spectroscopic and spectrometric analyses, while their absolute configurations were determined based on chiroptical measurements. Compounds 5 and 6 showed weak antifungal activity against Pyricularia oryzae with MIC values of 20 µg/mL.

Methods used to evaluate the peroxyl (ROO·) radical scavenging capacities of four common antioxidants
2012
Different methods that are used to measure peroxyl radical (ROO) scavenging capacity were used in model systems containing four common antioxidant compounds: ascorbic acid, cysteine, gallic acid and Trolox, a water-soluble vitamin E analogue. Five tests were performed, with differences in the method of peroxyl radical generation (lipoxygenase, azo-compound thermal degradation and spontaneous oxidation from a natural source of fatty acids) and in the addition of probes such as linoleic acid, crocin, fluorescein and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) by spin-trapping with a-phenyl-N-tert-butylnitrone. Significant differences were found in antioxidant reactivity, evaluated by dose–effect se…
Preparation of C-23 esterified silybin derivatives and evaluation of their lipid peroxidation inhibitory and DNA protective properties.
2009
A diverse series of C-23 esterified silybin derivatives (1a-n) were designed and synthesized. The antioxidative properties of these compounds were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and superoxide anion radical scavenging, ferrous ion chelation, and inhibition of rat liver homogenate lipid peroxidation. Their protective effects on the prevention of hydrogen peroxide induced DNA damage were also investigated. Most of the synthesized compounds exhibited more effective antioxidant activities than silybin. The esterified silybin analogues displayed satisfactory performance especially on iron chelation and antiperoxidative activity. Compound 1n in particular exhibited remarkable a…
Effect of ferulic acid and α-tocopherol antioxidants on properties of sodium caseinate edible films
2011
Edible films, based on sodium caseinate containing three different concentrations of ferulic acid or alpha-tocopherol (20, 40 and 60 mg/g sodium caseinate), were obtained in order to evaluate the effect of these compounds on properties of the caseinate matrices. Special emphasis was placed on their effect on the films' oxygen barrier properties, which are decisive in the prevention of the oxidation of foods containing lipids. Films were characterized as to their tensile, optical and surface properties as well as their barrier properties to water vapor, oxygen and aroma compounds (n-hexanal and n-hexanol). Ferulic acid was more efficient at reducing oxygen and n-hexanal permeability than alp…
A no-carrier-added72Se/72As radionuclide generator based on solid phase extraction
2005
Summary72As-labelled radiopharmaceuticals could be a valuable resource for Positron Emission Tomography (PET). In particular, the long half-life of72As (T1/2= 26 h) facilitates the observation of long-term physiological or metabolic processes, such as the enrichment and distribution of antibodies in tumor tissue. This work describes the primary radiochemical separation of no-carrier-added (nca)72Se from cyclotron irradiated germanium targets and the development of a polystyrene type solid-phase extraction based72Se/72As radionuclide generator, avoiding the addition of any selenium carrier. The irradiated germanium target is dissolved in HFconcand selenium is reduced with hydrazine dihydroch…
Optimization of the sorption process of copper cations from aqueous solution by pine bark (Pinus sylvestris)
2020
This study examined the effect of the chemical modification of pine bark (Pinus sylvestris) on the sorption efficiency of copper cations. The results were interpreted using pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order reaction models as well as Langmuir and Freundlich isothermal models. The sorption experiments were carried out using the batch technique. The study indicated the effect of the competitive sorption of copper cations and hydrogen cations as well as the adverse effect on the sorption efficiency of copper hydroxides formed under alkaline conditions. The need to assess the measurement uncertainty in determining the basic parameters of the sorption process was indicated. It was also …
