Riga experience in spallation neutron target related investigations

2002

Abstract Mercury has awakened interest as a potential material for spallation neutron source targets. Institute of Physics, University of Latvia has a 30 years experience of investigations in mercury. As specially projected building includes a 350 m2 experimental hall. The largest loop, containing 5×103 kg of Hg, can be transferred for solution of different tasks. As the first example results are presented when integral developed pressure and local (distribution of void fraction) characteristics of a two-phase mercury/gas riser were investigated. Second example – investigation of velocity fields and heat transfer conditions close to the beam entrance window in the SINQ target thermohydrauli…

Mass dependence of inclusive nuclear $\phi$ photoproduction

2003

Based on a prior determination of the $\phi$ selfenergy in a nuclear medium we perform a theoretical study of inclusive $\phi$ photoproduction in nuclei, looking at the $A$ dependence of the cross sections for different $\phi$ momenta. We find sizeable reductions in the nuclear cross sections with respect to the elementary one, using a $\phi$ selfenergy which implies a width about six times the free one at normal nuclear density. The calculations are done to match the set up for an ongoing experiment at {\it SPring8/Osaka} which should provide valuable information on the renormalization of the $\phi$ properties in nuclei.

Calculation of Proton-Deuteron Elastic Scattering at 10 MeV with a Realistic Potential

1998

We present the first results of a calculation of the differential cross section and of polarization observables for proton-deuteron elastic scattering at 10thinspthinspMeV proton laboratory energy, for the Paris potential. The method used is the {open_quotes}screening and renormalization approach{close_quotes} which allows one to correctly take into account the Coulomb repulsion between the two protons. Comparison is made with the precise experimental data of Sagara {ital et al.}thinspthinsp[Phys.thinspthinspRev.thinspthinspC {bold 50}, 576 (1994)] and of Sperison {ital et al.}thinspthinsp[Nucl.thinspthinspPhys.thinspthinsp{bold A422}, 81 (1984)]. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American …

Annihilation at rest of antiprotons and protons into neutral particles

2003

Abstract Annihilation of antiprotons and protons at rest into neutral particles has been studied with the Crystal Barrel detector at LEAR. Annihilation frequencies are determined for final states containing π 0 , η , η ′ and ω mesons using a liquid and a room temperature, 12 bar, gaseous hydrogen target. Including annihilation frequencies for production of neutral kaons from other experiments, the identified reactions for annihilation in liquid hydrogen add up to a branching fraction of (3.56±0.28)% per annihilation compared to the frequency of (3.50±0.30)% with which we observe the all-neutral decay modes inclusively. Since the exclusive final states are normalized to the Crystal Barrel me…

Fayans functional for deformed nuclei. Uranium region

2016

Fayans energy density functional (EDF) FaNDF^0 has been applied to the nuclei around uranium region. Ground state characteristics of the Th, U and Pu isotopic chains, up to the two-neutron drip line, are found and compared with predictions from several Skyrme EDFs. The two-neutron drip line is found for FaNDF^0, SLy4 and SkM^* EDFs for a set of elements with even proton number, from Pb up to Fm.

Mass and width of the σ meson at finite density

2003

Abstract The ππ interaction in the σ channel is studied at finite densities in a chiral unitary approach. We present some results on the σ meson pole position. We also analyze the (γ, ππ) reaction on nucleons and nuclei in the kinematical region where the scalar isoscalar ππ scattering amplitude is influenced by the low mass of the σ in nuclei, and has a large enhancement close to the position of the σ pole.

Differential cross section for the reaction 2H(γ, p)n from 133 to 158 MeV

1991

The cross section for the reaction 2H(γ, p)n has been measured at laboratory photon energies Eγ = 133−158 MeV and c.m. angles between 30° and 150°. The reaction was induced by a tagged bremsstrahlung photon beam incident on a liquid deuterium target. The uncertainty in the absolute cross sections is ⩽ 5%. There is now reasonable agreement between recent measurements in this energy region and the overall data set now defines the cross section sufficiently well to provide a test of current models of the reaction.

Deuteron form factor measurements at low momentum transfers

2016

A precise measurement of the elastic electron-deuteron scattering cross section at four-momentum transfers of 0.24 fm−1 ≤ Q ≤ 2.7 fm−1 has been performed at the Mainz Microtron. In this paper we describe the utilized experimental setup and the necessary analysis procedure to precisely determine the deuteron charge form factor from these data. Finally, the deuteron charge radius rd can be extracted from an extrapolation of that form factor to Q 2 = 0.
