Monte Carlo Tests of Nucleation Concepts in the Lattice Gas Model

The conventional theory of homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation in a supersaturated vapor is tested by Monte Carlo simulations of the lattice gas (Ising) model with nearest-neighbor attractive interactions on the simple cubic lattice. The theory considers the nucleation process as a slow (quasi-static) cluster (droplet) growth over a free energy barrier $\Delta F^*$, constructed in terms of a balance of surface and bulk term of a "critical droplet" of radius $R^*$, implying that the rates of droplet growth and shrinking essentially balance each other for droplet radius $R=R^*$. Clinical, radiological and therapeutic features of keratocystic odontogenic tumours: a study over a decade

Factors associated with the potential for recurrence of keratocystic odontogenic tumours (KCOT) still remain to be clearly determined and no consensus exists concerning the management of KCOT. The purpose of this study was to evaluate different clinical factors associated with KCOT and its treatment methods. A retrospective review was performed of 55 cases treated from 2001 to 2010. Of the 55 cases, 27% were associated with an impacted or semi-impacted tooth. The majority of the lesions (82%) were located in tooth-bearing areas, and the overall mandibular to maxilla ratio of tumour occurrence was 5:1. Papillote and Piopio:DrosophilaZP-domain proteins required for cell adhesion to the apical extracellular matrix and microtubule organization

Adhesion between epithelial cells and extracellular substrates is normally mediated through basal adhesion complexes. However, some cells also possess comparable junctions on their apical surface. Here, we describe two new Drosophila proteins, Piopio and Papillote, that are required for the link between the apical epithelial surface and the overlying apical extracellular matrix (aECM). The two proteins share a zona pellucida (ZP) domain with mammalian aECM components, including the tectorins found in the vertebrate inner ear. Nucleation of quasicrystals by rapid cooling of a binary melt: A molecular-dynamics study.

A binary Lennard-Jones fluid was cooled in an NPT ensemble by molecular-dynamics simulations. Depending on the cooling rate, we find a sharp transition from the melt either into a disordered structure or into a phase of icosahedral long-range order. We also observed a decagonal phase.

Calcium carbonate is the most abundant biomineral, whose amorphous form is stabilized in nature by a variety of organic additives and water. It is used to manipulate the morphology of new materials and to make strong inorganic/organic hybrid materials. However, the crystallization pathways (e.g., nucleation and growth, two-step nucleation pathways involving disordered, amorphous, or dense liquid states preceding the appearance of crystalline phases) remain often unclear. Abstract Freshwater and marine cultured pearls form via identical processes to the shells of bivalves and can therefore serve as models for the biomineralization of bivalve shells in general. Their nanostructure consists of membrane-coated granules (vesicles) which contain amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) at the beginning of the biomineralization sequence, preceding the crystallization of aragonite and vaterite. One-step growth of isolated CdO nanoparticles on r-sapphire substrates by using the spray pyrolysis methodology

In spite of the remarkable properties of CdO, there are only a few reports on CdO nanostructures, especially on isolated NPs. In this paper, we analyze the growth of isolated CdO nanoparticles (NPs) on 0.5° miscut r-sapphire substrates by using the spray pyrolysis methodology in its classical configuration. A systematic study has been performed to optimize the growth parameters such as precursor concentration, growth time, spray rate and growth temperature to obtain CdO NPs (size: 6–10 nm to 35–100 nm depending on the growth conditions).
