Production ofWbosons in proton-nucleus collisions

1979

It is shown that nuclear effects can cause an enhancement in the cross section for production of $W$ bosons in a proton-nucleus collision. The cross section near threshold is a few orders of magnitude higher than expected from a linear dependence on the atomic number. Encouraging implications for experiments with fixed targets at laboratory energies of ${10}^{3}$ GeV and higher are discussed. We also discuss lepton-pair production off nuclei.

Rare weak decays and nuclear structure

2014

Abstract. Weak interactions cause the atomic nuclei to decay via beta and double beta decays. Double beta decays are extremely rare since they are weak-interaction processes of the second order. Also (single) beta decays can be extremely rare. This can be caused by either a large di ff erence between the spins of the initial and final state (the so-called “forbidden” beta decays) or an extremely small Q value (decay energy) of the decay. All these cases are discussed in this article, and particular emphasis is given to the neutrino- less double electron capture on the double beta side of decays. peerReviewed

Unified description of hadronic and electromagnetic reactions of the two-nucleon system

2010

Abstract Studies of the two-nucleon system are essential for a profound understanding of nuclear structure and for the exploration of the limits of the effective description of atomic nuclei in terms of nucleons, mesons and isobars. In the present work, a unified description of hadronic and electromagnetic reactions on the two-nucleon system is developed in the framework of a coupled-channel N N / N Δ -approach which is based on one general Hamiltonian and which treats the pion exchange in the hadronic baryon–baryon interaction as well as in the meson exchange currents in the exact retarded manner. Unitarity and gauge invariance are at least approximately fulfilled. Several hadronic and ele…

Single inclusive hadron production in pA collisions at NLO

2016

We study single inclusive forward hadron production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions at next-to-leading order in the Color Glass Condensate framework. Recent studies have shown that the next-to-leading order corrections to this process are large and negative at large transverse momentum, leading to negative cross sections. We propose to overcome this difficulty by introducing an explicit rapidity factorization scale when subtracting the rapidity divergence into the evolution of the target.

Forward J/ψ production at high energy: Centrality dependence and mean transverse momentum

2016

Forward rapidity $J/\psi$ meson production in proton-nucleus collisions can be an important constraint of descriptions of the small-$x$ nuclear wavefunction. In an earlier work we studied this process using a dipole cross section satisfying the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation, fit to HERA inclusive data and consistently extrapolated to the nuclear case using a standard Woods-Saxon distribution. In this paper we present further calculations of these cross sections, studying the mean transverse momentum of the meson and the dependence on collision centrality. We also extend the calculation to backward rapidities using nuclear parton distribution functions. We show that the parametrization is over…

The evolution of the large-scale emission in Fanaroff-Riley type I jets

2011

Recent observations in X-rays and gamma-rays of nearby Fanaroff-Riley type I (FR I) radio galaxies have raised the question of the origin of the emission detected in the termination structures of their jets. The study of these structures can give information on the conditions for particle acceleration and radiation at the front shocks. In addition, an evolutionary scenario can help to disentangle the origin of the detected X-ray emission in young FR I sources, like some gigahertz peaked spectrum active galactic nuclei. This work focuses on the nature and detectability of the radiation seen from the termination regions of evolving FR I jets. We use the results of a relativistic, two-dimensio…

J/\psi depletion in a nuclear medium

2012

In this talk, we have taken into account the main decay channel of J/ψ when travelling inside a nucleus. In analogy to all vector mesons in SU(3), where the main decay channel is to two pseudoscalars, in the case of the J/ψ the meson meson channel to which it couples strongly is DD. Taking this into account we study the J/ψN → DΛc and J/ψN → DΣc mediated by D-exchange. To obtain the couplings we use an extension to SU(4) of the local hidden gauge Lagrangians as done in [1]. Analogously, we consider the mechanisms where the exchanged D collides with a nucleon and gives πΛc or πΣc. The sum of these channels produces a J/ψN inelastic cross section which is larger than the elastic one and is re…

Neutron skin studies of medium and heavy nuclei

2014

The recent PREX experiment at JLab has demonstrated the sensitivity of parity violating electron scattering to the neutron density, meanwhile outlining its major experimental challenges. On the other side, intermediate energy photons are an ideal probe for studying the properties of strongly interacting matter from the nuclear scale down to the sub-nuclear components of the nucleus. Among others coherent pion photoproduction can provide information on the existence and nature of neutron skins in nuclei. The simultaneous combination of different techniques allows a systematic determination across the periodic table thus benchmarking modern calculation. Recently a systematic investigation of …
