Low-level gamma-ray spectrometry for analysing fusion plasma conditions

2008

Abstract A new method, combining activation by neutrons and charged particles with ultra low-level gamma-ray spectrometry, aimed at obtaining a better understanding and more adequate measurements of MeV particle leaks in magnetic fusion devices was studied here. A total of 36 samples containing Ti, LiF, B 4 C and W were placed in a boron-nitride holder mounted on the ceiling of the JET Tokamak. The samples were activated by 63 pulses from a D– 3 He plasma and were later measured using underground gamma-ray spectrometry. The radionuclides 7 Be, 46 Sc, 54 Mn, 56 Co, 57 Co, 58 Co, 124 Sb, 181 Hf, 182 Ta, 181 W and 185 W were detected in several of the samples, with very low levels of activity …

First isochronous mass spectrometry at the experimental storage ring ESR

2000

Short-lived exotic nuclei can be produced and separated with the high-energy secondary nuclear beam facility FRS at GSI. These nuclides can be injected and stored in the storage ring ESR. The lower lifetime limit of the presently existing methods for mass measurements on these nuclides at the ESR is about a few seconds. We have developed and investigated an isochronous operational mode of the ESR, that makes mass measurements of nuclides with lifetimes down to a few ls feasible. It has been commissioned in experiments using long-lived nuclides with known masses. A mass resolving power of about 150 000 has been achieved in a "rst pilot experiment. A suitable detector system has been implemen…

Observation of a dramatic hindrance of the nuclear decay of isomeric states for fully ionized atoms

2003

Abstract The half-lives of isomeric states of fully ionized 144Tb, 149Dy and 151Er have been measured. These nuclides were produced via fragmentation of about 900 MeV/u 209Bi projectiles, separated in flight with the fragment separator (FRS) and stored in the cooler ring (ESR). The decay times of the cooled fragments have been measured with time-resolved Schottky spectrometry. We observed for the first time drastic increases of the half-lives of bare isomers by factors of up to 30 compared to their neutral counterparts. This is due to the exclusion of the strong internal conversion and electron-capture channels in the radioactive decay of these bare nuclei. The experimental results are in g…

Direct mass measurement of N $\sim$ Z nuclei with A = 64–80 using the CSS2 cyclotron

2005

International audience; The masses of ten neutron-deficient nuclides near the N = Z line with A = 64–80 have been measured with the direct time-of-flight technique using the CSS2 cyclotron as a high-resolution spectrometer. All measured masses agree with the 2003 atomic mass evaluation and are compared to the predictions of the finite range droplet model. The atomic mass excesses obtained for $^{68}$Se and $^{80}$Y are -53.958(246) MeV and -60.971(180) MeV, respectively. The new results for $^{68}$Se and $^(80}$Y are compared to other recent experimental values.

Extension of Penning-trap mass measurements to very short-lived nuclides

2000

Abstract Mass measurements on 33,34,42,43 Ar have been performed at the ISOLTRAP spectrometer. An accuracy of δm ≈4 keV has been achieved for all measured isotopes. With 33 Ar it is the first time that a nuclide with a half-life shorter than one second has been investigated using a Penning trap. This became possible due to the recently installed linear radio-frequency ion-trap system and an improved, faster measurement cycle.

Direct mass measurements ofSe68andY80

2008

The masses of neutron-deficient nuclides near the $N=Z$ line with $A=64\text{\ensuremath{-}}80$ have been determined using a direct time-of-flight technique which employed a cyclotron as a high-resolution spectrometer. The measured atomic masses for $^{68}\mathrm{Se}$ and $^{80}\mathrm{Y}$ were 67.9421(3) u and 79.9344(2) u, respectively. The new values agree with the 2003 Atomic Mass Evaluation. The result for $^{68}\mathrm{Se}$ confirms that this nucleus is a waiting point of the rp-process, and that for $^{80}\mathrm{Y}$ resolves the conflict between earlier measurements. Using the present results and the 2003 Atomic Mass Evaluation compilation, the empirical interaction between the last…

PIPERADE: A double Penning trap for mass separation and mass spectrometry at DESIR/SPIRAL2

2021

International audience; A double Penning trap is being commissioned at CENBG Bordeaux for the future DESIR/SPIRAL2 facility of GANIL. The setup is designed to perform both high-resolution mass separation of the ion beam for trap-assisted spectroscopy, and high-accuracy mass spectrometry of short-lived nuclides. In this paper, the technical details of the new device are described. First offline tests with the purification trap are also presented, showing a mass resolving power of about 105.

Low- and medium-spin states in theN=124 isotones208Po and209At

1985

Excited levels in208Po and209At were populated in the reactions (p, 2n) and (3He, 3n), and208Po also in the EC-decay of the208At ground state, which was produced in the209Bi(3He, 4n) reaction. The experimental procedures comprised gamma-ray excitation functions,γ- γ coincidences, as well as gamma-ray angular distribution and conversionelectron measurements, both on- and off-line. The properties of about twenty-five levels in each nuclide were studied. In208Po the energy of the 8+→6+ transition could be determined to be 4.0±0.2keV and the 8+ state thus has an excitation energy of 1,528 keV. The effective quadrupole charge of theh 9/2 proton can be derived ase eff(τ h 9/2)=1.69(15)e. For the …

Recent progress in laser spectroscopy of the actinides

2020

The interest to perform laser spectroscopy in the heaviest elements arises from the strong impact of relativistic effects, electron correlations and quantum electrodynamics on their atomic structure. Once this atomic structure is well understood, laser spectroscopy also provides access to nuclear properties such as spins, mean square charge radii and electromagnetic moments in a nuclear-model independent way. This is of particular interest for the heaviest actinides around $N = 152$, a region of shell stabilized deformed nuclei. The experimental progress of laser spectroscopy in this region benefitted from continuous methodological and technical developments such as the introduction of buff…

New determination of double-β-decay properties in48Ca: High-precisionQββ-value measurement and improved nuclear matrix element calculations

2014

We report a direct measurement of the Q-value of the neutrinoless double-beta-decay candidate 48Ca at the TITAN Penning-trap mass spectrometer, with the result that Q = 4267.98(32) keV. We measured the masses of both the mother and daughter nuclides, and in the latter case found a 1 keV deviation from the literature value. In addition to the Q-value, we also present results of a new calculation of the neutrinoless double-beta-decay nuclear matrix element of 48Ca. Using diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory to second order to account for physics outside the valence space, we constructed an effective shell-model double-beta-decay operator, which increased the nuclear matrix element by ab…
