Assessment of environmental AMD risk factors in a population of patients suffering from stroke and myocardial infarction

International audience; Purpose: Stroke and myocardial infarction are common diseases occurring in patients suffering from Age Macular Degeneration (AMD). We assessed the rate of AMD and AMD risk factors in patients suffering from recent stroke or myocardial infarction. Methods: Patients suffering from a recent stroke or myocardial infarction (less than 1 month) benefited from a thorough ophthalmic examination with the following measurements and evaluations: visual acuity, intraocular pressure, fundus photography, Raman spectroscopy and macular OCT. Lipid profile of tenon's capsule in glaucoma patients

International audience; Purpose: To provide data on the lipid profile of the Tenon’s capsule in Human glaucomatous eyes and to establish possible relationships with the short term outcome of filtration surgery. Methods: Fragments of Tenon’s capsule were collected during glaucoma surgery in patients suffering from open angle glaucoma (10 trabeculectomies and 17 non penetrating deep sclerectomies). The lipid profile of the human samples was determined by gas chromatography. A successful outcome after glaucoma surgery was defined by an intraocular pressure (IOP) ≤ 15 mmHg at 6 months without any IOP‐lowering agent. Hormonal and nutritional control of L‐carnitine uptake in myoblastic C2C12 cells

L-Carnitine plays an important role in skeletal muscle bioenergetics, and its bioavailability and thus its import may be crucial for muscle function. We studied the effect of thyroid hormone, insulin, and iron overload, hormones and nutrients known to alter muscle metabolism, on L-carnitine import into C2C12 cells. We report here L-carnitine uptake is increased by thyroid hormones and decreased by iron. Insulin was found to be ineffective in altering the L-carnitine uptake.

The influence of nutrition on skin health is a growing research area but the findings of various studies on the effect of diet on the development of acne have often been contradictory. The general opinion among researchers has oscillated between two different, opposing positions: that diet either is or is not a key factor for acne development.
