Entropy-based Localization of Textured Regions

2011

Appearance description is a relevant field in computer vision that enables object recognition in domains as re-identification, retrieval and classification. Important cues to describe appearance are colors and textures. However, in real cases, texture detection is challenging due to occlusions and to deformations of the clothing while person's pose changes. Moreover, in some cases, the processed images have a low resolution and methods at the state of the art for texture analysis are not appropriate. In this paper, we deal with the problem of localizing real textures for clothing description purposes, such as stripes and/or complex patterns. Our method uses the entropy of primitive distribu…

Comparative Reasoning for Intelligent Agents

2023

We demonstrate new comparative reasoning abilities of NARS, a formal model of intelligence, which enable the asymmetric comparison of perceivable quantifiable attributes of objects using rela- tions. These new abilities are implemented by extending NAL with addi- tional inference rules. We demonstrate the new capabilities in a bottle- picking experiment on a mobile robot running ONA, an implementation of NARS.

The egoistic approach to parallel process migration into heterogeneous workstation network

1996

Abstract A new approach to the allocation of processes in a distributed system is discussed. The proposed solution deals with process migration into heterogeneous systems by means of a strategy that delegates the individual parallel applications to manage the migration of their processes by themselves, on the basis of their own performance objectives. This approach is discussed in opposition to the global scheduling based one, and the load balancing objective is pursued as an effect of the optimization of individual applications. A new performance evaluation criterion is introduced that consists in monitoring the delays that occur when two parallel processes run towards a common synchroniza…

Separation of Concerns and Role Implementation in the PASSI Design Process

2007

The use of design patterns proved successful in lowering the development time and number of errors when producing software with the object-oriented paradigm. In previous works we engaged the production of a tool for the reuse of patterns for multi-agent systems. Now we are fronting a new problem: automatic code generation for agents, designed with a specific methodology, with the support of design patterns and using an aspect oriented approach. In this work we present our preliminary experiences in the identification, description, production and use of aspects for multi agent systems and a tool for code production.

360° Tracking Using a Virtual PTZ Camera

2017

Object tracking using still or PTZ cameras is a hard task for large spaces and needs several devices to completely cover the area or to track multiple subjects. The introduction of \(360^{\circ }\) camera technology offers a complete view of the scene in a single image and can be useful to reduce the number of devices needed in the tracking problem. In this paper we present a framework using \(360^{\circ }\) cameras to simulate an unlimited number of PTZ cameras and to be used for tracking. The proposed method to track a single target process an equirectangular view of the scene and obtains a model of the moving object in the image plane. The target is tracked analyzing the next frame of th…

Midground Object Detection in Real World Video Scenes,

2007

Traditional video scene analysis depends on accurate background modeling to identify salient foreground objects. However, in many important surveillance applications, saliency is defined by the appearance of a new non-ephemeral object that is between the foreground and background. This midground realm is defined by a temporal window following the object's appearance; but it also depends on adaptive background modeling to allow detection with scene variations (e.g., occlusion, small illumination changes). The human visual system is ill-suited for midground detection. For example, when surveying a busy airline terminal, it is difficult (but important) to detect an unattended bag which appears…

The principle of mandatory criminal prosecution and the independence of public prosecutors in the Italian criminal justice system

2010

The purpose of this article is to explain the reasons for adopting, in Italy, the principle of mandatory criminal prosecution. This rule is closely connected to the role and functions of Italian public prosecutors. The supreme guarantee deriving from the rule governing the mandatory status of criminal prosecution is to safeguard the equal treatment of all citizens before criminal law. This is possible only if criminal prosecution is the responsibility of a public body carrying out public functions without any external interference. This is the reason for the independence of public prosecutors from the other powers of the state. But, there has been a tendency to separate the status of public…

Obiezione di coscienza e vulnerabilità. Il lato oscuro dei movimenti di resistenza alle vaccinazioni obbligatorie.

2019

After a worrying decrease of the rate of vaccination, Italian Parliament has enacted the law 119/2017 which raises the number of mandatory vaccination and prohibits unvaccinated children, except those for medical reasons, to attend infant school. In this paper, I focus on the moral justification of antivaccinist groups by applying the account of conscientious objection provided by Raz and followed by Gascón Abellan and Saporiti. According to this conception, conscientious objection is a moral right insofar as it is an instance of a right to privacy, which entails the right to do wrong. I show how this conception cannot justify these movements insofar as 1) it assumes a moral topography in w…

SUBJETIVISMO ÉTICO Y OBJECIÓN DE CONCIENCIA

2018

In this paper, I will present the conceptual differences between civil disobedience and conscientious objection, which have been depicted by liberal authors such as J. Rawls, J. Raz and in Spain by M. Gascón Abellán. I will argue that conscientious objection, as a practice that is distinct from civil disobedience and rests on a right to “moral privacy”, finds his justification on a subjectivist ethics or on a voluntarist account of natural law. I will try to show that in both cases, it is not clear how a) to justify legal norms that tries to balance the objectors’ claims and the opposite claims of rights’ holders b) to determine the seriousness of the ethical commitment of conscientious obj…
