On enhancing the object migration automaton using the Pursuit paradigm
2017
Abstract One of the most difficult problems that is all-pervasive in computing is that of partitioning. It has applications in the partitioning of databases into relations, the realization of the relations themselves into sub-relations based on the partitioning of the attributes, the assignment of processes to processors, graph partitioning, and the task assignment problem, etc. The problem is known to be NP-hard. The benchmark solution for this for the Equi-Partitioning Problem (EPP) has involved the classic field of Learning Automata (LA), and the corresponding algorithm, the Object Migrating Automata (OMA) has been used in all of these application domains. While the OMA is a fixed struct…
Which new semantic for new shapes?
2006
There are two innovations which have drastically changed the building process: the operational continuity of the design and construction phases, and the software allowing not only the representation but also the autonomous creation of complex shapes never before thought of just because they could not be represented. This last innovation gave rise to a new design paradigm whose tools, according to their supporters, are the most advanced fields of mathematics and information science. Some ways of using these new possibilities gave rise to a radical, problematic, change in the relationship net between the designer’s intentions, the shapes through which they express them (invented or self-gener…
Mesh connectivity compression using convection reconstruction
2007
International audience; During a highly productive period running from 1995 to about 2002, the research in lossless compression of 3D meshes mainly consisted in a hard battle for the best bitrates. But for a few years, compression rates seem stabilized around 1.5 bit per vertex for the connectivity coding of usual meshes, and more and more work is dedicated to remeshing, lossy compression, or gigantic mesh compression, where memory and CPU optimizations are the new priority. However, the size of 3D models keeps growing, and many application fields keep requiring lossless compression. In this paper, we present a new contribution for single-rate lossless connectivity compression, which first …
LeSSS: Learned Shared Semantic Spaces for Relating Multi-Modal Representations of 3D Shapes
2015
In this paper, we propose a new method for structuring multi-modal representations of shapes according to semantic relations. We learn a metric that links semantically similar objects represented in different modalities. First, 3D-shapes are associated with textual labels by learning how textual attributes are related to the observed geometry. Correlations between similar labels are captured by simultaneously embedding labels and shape descriptors into a common latent space in which an inner product corresponds to similarity. The mapping is learned robustly by optimizing a rank-based loss function under a sparseness prior for the spectrum of the matrix of all classifiers. Second, we extend …
Multiobjective GRASP with Path Relinking
2015
In this paper we review and propose different adaptations of the GRASP metaheuristic to solve multiobjective combinatorial optimization problems. In particular, we describe several alternatives to specialize the construction and improvement components of GRASP when two or more objectives are considered. GRASP has been successfully coupled with Path Relinking for single-objective optimization. Moreover, we propose different hybridizations of GRASP and Path Relinking for multiobjective optimization. We apply the proposed GRASP with Path Relinking variants to two combinatorial optimization problems, the biobjective orienteering problem and the biobjective path dissimilarity problem. We report …
The what, when, where, and how of visual word recognition
2014
A long-standing debate in reading research is whether printed words are perceived in a feedforward manner on the basis of orthographic information, with other representations such as semantics and phonology activated subsequently, or whether the system is fully interactive and feedback from these representations shapes early visual word recognition. We review recent evidence from behavioral, functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, magnetoencephalography, and biologically plausible connectionist modeling approaches, focusing on how each approach provides insight into the temporal flow of information in the lexical system. We conclude that, consistent with interactive a…
REM near-IR and optical multiband observations of PKS 2155-304 in 2005
2007
Spectral variability is the main tool for constraining emission models of BL Lac objects. By means of systematic observations of the BL Lac prototype PKS 2155-304 in the infrared-optical band, we explore variability on the scales of months, days and hours. We made our observations with the robotic 60 cm telescope REM located at La Silla, Chile. VRIJHK filters were used. PKS 2155-304 was observed from May to December 2005. The wavelength interval explored, the total number of photometric points and the short integration time render our photometry substantially superior to previous ones for this source. On the basis of the intensity and colour we distinguish three different states of the sour…
Hav, hage, teater og temperatur i Cora Sandels <i>Alberte</i>-bøker
2010
Current readings of Cora Sandel’s Alberta-trilogy (1926-1939) frequently tend to reuse the novels’ imagery in their own descriptive and interpretive statements – instead of treating this characteristic of the novels with the same degree of attention as, e.g., the trilogy’s psychological and political aspects, or its narrative technique. The present article attempts to draw attention to the trilogy’s imagery as a both autonomous and integral element in Cora Sandel’s novelistic art. Three metaphorical ways of thought which show their presence throughout the trilogy, are singled out: In the novels, the persons (and thus, implicitly or explicitly, the human condition) are frequently pictured as…
Drivers influencing the governance of inter-firm relationships in the biopharmaceutical industry: an empirical survey in the Italian context
2013
This paper focuses on factors influencing the choice of the governance form in inter-firm relationships (IFRs) between pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. By reviewing the relevant literature on transaction cost economics, property right theory, real option and resources-based view, we located some drivers that might influence such relationships and we formulated a set of hypotheses linking them to governance forms. Such a theoretical framework has been empirically tested through a survey conducted among the Italian companies associated to Farmindustria. Empirical results provide some interesting insights on how shaping bio-pharmaceutical deals; we found that the developmental stage…
