Dynamic SEDs of southern blazars - DSSB

2016

The Dynamic SEDs of southern blazars catalog is based on a TANAMI multiwavelength project that has been monitoring a sample of 22 radio-loud blazars of the southern sky from radio to gamma-ray wavelengths. (4 data files). Simultaneous broadband spectral and temporal studies of blazars are an important tool for investigating active galactic nuclei (AGN) jet physics. Aims. We study the spectral evolution between quiescent and flaring periods of 22 radio-loud AGN through multiepoch, quasi-simultaneous broadband spectra. For many of these sources these are the first broadband studies. Methods. We use a Bayesian block analysis of Fermi/LAT light curves to determine time ranges of constant flux f…

Objet et préfiguration

2010

We call prefigurative an object whose primary function is to allow whoever manipulates it to represent an object, a situation, an action that has not yet happened ; the prefigured object is particular because it not only exists to convey meaning but also to inform, to get us to believe and finally to make us act. This article aims to outline the semiotic analysis of one of these objects, the restaurant menu: leaving aside the verbal text, we shall examine the material object which is its support (paper, cardboard, slate, screen, etc..) and see that it directs our receptions and predisposes us by its material, its size, its touch, its typography and its layout to perceive the true taste of t…

Absolute kinematics of radio source components in the complete S5 polar cap sample

2008

We report on the first wide-field, high-precision astrometric analysis of the 13 extragalactic radio sources of the complete S5 polar cap sample at 15.4 GHz. We describe new algorithms developed to enable the use of differenced phase delays in wide-field astrometric observations and discuss the impact of using differenced phase delays on the precision of the wide-field astrometric analysis. From this global fit, we obtained estimates of the relative source positions with precisions ranging from 14 to 200 μas at 15.4 GHz, depending on the angular separation of the sources (from ∼1.6 to ∼20.8 degrees). These precisions are ∼10 times higher than the achievable precisions using the phase-refere…

Oxygen parameters of blood: Definitions and symbols

1990

Definitions and symbols for relevant parameters of the oxygen status of arterial blood are recommended. The recommendations are as simple as possible, easy to understand, and devoid of misinterpretations and double meanings. The authors propose no new definitions for limited new methods, no combination of symbols and methods, and no association between definition, symbol and commercial name.

Visual learning in Drosophila: Application on a roving robot and comparisons

2011

Visual learning is an important aspect of fly life. Flies are able to extract visual cues from objects, like colors, vertical and horizontal distributedness, and others, that can be used for learning to associate a meaning to specific features (i.e. a reward or a punishment). Interesting biological experiments show trained stationary flying flies avoiding flying towards specific visual objects, appearing on the surrounding environment. Wild-type flies effectively learn to avoid those objects but this is not the case for the learning mutant rutabaga defective in the cyclic AMP dependent pathway for plasticity. A bio-inspired architecture has been proposed to model the fly behavior and experi…

Socioecological correlates of perceived motor competence in 5- to 7-year-old Finnish children

2019

We investigated child, family, and environmental factors associated with young children’s perceptions of locomotor (LM) and object control (OC) skills. The participants comprised 472 children (6.22 ± 0.63) and their parents. The children were assessed for their perception of motor competence in LM and OC skills (using the pictorial scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence for young children), and actual motor competence (Test of Gross Motor Development 3rd edition and Körperkoordinationstest Für Kinder). Anthropometrics were calculated using the children’s body mass index standard deviation scores. A parent questionnaire included questions about child factors (sex, child’s independent w…

Phase retrieval for studying the structure of vitreous floaters simulated in a model eye

2021

We simulate vitreous floaters in a model eye and apply a phase retrieval algorithm to recover the structure of the vitreous floaters. The algorithm requires modulating the object under study by a r...

Detection of rupture lines for active scanning

2007

Corner and junction detection is an important preprocessing step in image registration, data fusion, object recognition, and many other tasks. This work deals with corner and junction detection of characteristic features of the structure resulting from cross-pattern projection. The ultimate aim is to adapt the positions and orientation of the cross-pattern projections to what has been observed. The use of this projected light pattern in the framework of active vision allows us to identify certain points of interest on 3-D objects, to directly acquire a synthesis, which thus permits simplified detection, measurement, recognition, or tracking. We present detection methods for corners and junc…

Object Localization Does Not Imply Awareness of Object Category at the Break of Continuous Flash Suppression

2017

In continuous flash suppression (CFS), a dynamic noise masker, presented to one eye, suppresses conscious perception of a test stimulus, presented to the other eye, until the suppressed stimulus comes to awareness after few seconds. But what do we see breaking the dominance of the masker in the transition period? We addressed this question with a dual-task in which observers indicated (i) whether the test object was left or right of the fixation mark (localization) and (ii) whether it was a face or a house (categorization). As done recently Stein et al. (2011a), we used two experimental varieties to rule out confounds with decisional strategy. In the terminated mode, stimulus and masker wer…

Detection of stationary objects by the blind Cave FishAnoptichthys jordani (Characidae)

1981

It was noticed that the blind Mexican Cave Fish repeatedly passes along objects new to it at a short distance. Observations and experiments are reported which support the hypothesis that water movements occurring between the stationary object and the fish as it passes by convey information about the location and possibly the shape of the object, which is detected by the lateral line organ of the fish. Water movements of the expected type were recorded with the help of a model fish equipped with a mechano-electric analogue of a free neuromast.
