Assessing the case of Dengue in Argentina 2009: discrimination and fear

2010

After almost a decade, the re-appearance of Dengue in Argentina caused panic and fears. Unlike Bolivia, Brazil and Paraguay where policies of preventions have been followed, the future of dengue is uncertain for Argentina; this paper does not have any political affiliation but emphasizes the role that mass media play in the coverage of epidemics. The question as to whether a newspaper or mass media corporation should maintain a minimum of objectivity is too complex to be resolved in this short article. However, we have so far set forth a model which will help other researchers to interpret topics of this nature in the future. In moments of disorder, uncertainty or disaster, societies experi…

Revisiting the didactic triangle: from the particular to the general

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: ZDM. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.springerlink.com/content/61p78l089tnx8rn5/ The basic notion of a didactic triangle is explained with historical annotations on its origins and subsequent theorization in the literature. Instances of its application to classroom environments to demonstrate its representational capabilities are presented. Generalizations of the triangle are proposed that integrate the role of technology, the researcher in mathematics teaching developmental research, and mediating complexes in the student–teacher–content interfaces. Further, the use of the didactic triangle as a heuristic device is also discus…

Beziehung zwischen Kopfumfang und sonographischer Morphometrie der Ventrikelstrukturen im Neugeborenen- und Säuglingsalter

2001

AIM: To determine normal values of sonographic measurements of the brain in neonates and infants. METHOD: Cerebral ultrasonographic examinations were performed in 143 healthy newborns and infants. The size of the ventricles was determined by ascertaining distances as well as performing planimetric measurements of the ventricular area and circumference in standardized planes. RESULTS: Throughout the course of the study we observed a continous increase in size and a strong correlation with head circumference. The middle coronary plane used for the measurements allows the accurate representation of the ventricles and a more objective assessment of size. CONCLUSION: Based on the morphometric da…

Classification of Schizophrenia Patients and Healthy Controls Using ICA of Complex-Valued fMRI Data and Convolutional Neural Networks

2019

Deep learning has contributed greatly to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) analysis, however, spatial maps derived from fMRI data by independent component analysis (ICA), as promising biomarkers, have rarely been directly used to perform individualized diagnosis. As such, this study proposes a novel framework combining ICA and convolutional neural network (CNN) for classifying schizophrenia patients (SZs) and healthy controls (HCs). ICA is first used to obtain components of interest which have been previously implicated in schizophrenia. Functionally informative slices of these components are then selected and labelled. CNN is finally employed to learn hierarchical diagnostic fea…

Estimating Heart Rate, Energy Expenditure, and Physical Performance With a Wrist Photoplethysmographic Device During Running

2017

BackgroundWearable sensors enable long-term monitoring of health and wellbeing indicators. An objective evaluation of sensors’ accuracy is important, especially for their use in health care. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to use a wrist-worn optical heart rate (OHR) device to estimate heart rate (HR), energy expenditure (EE), and maximal oxygen intake capacity (VO2Max) during running and to evaluate the accuracy of the estimated parameters (HR, EE, and VO2Max) against golden reference methods. MethodsA total of 24 healthy volunteers, of whom 11 were female, with a mean age of 36.2 years (SD 8.2 years) participated in a submaximal self-paced outdoor running test and maximal voluntary exe…

Temporal pole morphology in first-episode schizophrenia patients:

2010

Studies of the temporal pole (TP) in schizophrenia patients are not consistent. The aim of this study was to investigate morphometric anomalies of the TP in first-episode schizophrenia patients. Patients did not significantly differ from controls in the TP morphometric variables evaluated. Clinical variables were not significantly related to the TP.

Association of Dunbar, May-Thurner and Nutcracker Compression Syndromes in One Patient

2020

Abstract We report a case of Dunbar syndrome, May–Thurner syndrome and Nutcracker syndrome diagnosed in one patient with clinical presentation and imaging findings on Doppler ultrasonography. Dunbar syndrome or truncus coeliacus compression syndrome is an under-diagnosed vascular compression syndrome with a lot of controversy around it because of insufficient differentiation from celiac artery stenosis. May–Thurner syndrome or iliac vein compression syndrome is an anatomically variable condition of venous outflow obstruction caused by extrinsic compression by the right common iliac artery as it crosses the iliac vein anteriorly. In Nutcracker syndrome due to compression the outflow from the…

Editorial for the Special Issue “Frontiers in Spectral Imaging and 3D Technologies for Geospatial Solutions”

2019

This Special Issue hosts papers on the integrated use of spectral imaging and 3D technologies in remote sensing, including novel sensors, evolving machine learning technologies for data analysis, and the utilization of these technologies in a variety of geospatial applications. The presented results showed improved results when multimodal data was used in object analysis.

Determinants of health policy impact: comparative results of a European policymaker study.

2003

This article will use a new theoretical framework for the analysis of health policy impact introduced by Rütten et al. (2003). In particular, it will report on a comparative European study of policymakers' perception and evaluation of specific determinants of the policy impact, both in terms of output (implemented measures) and outcome (health behaviour change). Policy determinants investigated are goals, resources, obligations and opportunities as related to the policymaking process.Theory is applied to a comparative analysis of prevention and health promotion policy in Belgium, Finland, Germany. The Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. The study is MED2-part of a project that has developed…

Re-Thinking the Use of Conscientious Objection by Health Professionals: A Regulatory Proposal Based on Legal Abortion Practices in Argentina

2019

“Ninety percent of health-care practitioners will not perform abortions,” warned physicians in Chaco, a province in north-eastern Argentina, during the debate in Argentina’s Senate to extend the legalization of abortion in July 2018. Around this same time, in a nearby province, Misiones, every physician in one hospital declared that they would register as conscientious objectors should the legislation prove successful. Just a few days earlier, Argentina’s press reported that more than 200 girls had been raped and forced to give birth in Misiones, without access to legal abortion under the rape indication. In Argentina abortion is legally permitted in cases where a pregnancy presents a risk …
