Register data in sample allocations for small-area estimation
2018
The inadequate control of sample sizes in surveys using stratified sampling and area estimation may occur when the overall sample size is small or auxiliary information is insufficiently used. Very small sample sizes are possible for some areas. The proposed allocation based on multi-objective optimization uses a small-area model and estimation method and semi-collected empirical data annually collected empirical data. The assessment of its performance at the area and at the population levels is based on design-based sample simulations. Five previously developed allocations serve as references. The model-based estimator is more accurate than the design-based Horvitz–Thompson estimator and t…
Bag-of-word based brand recognition using Markov Clustering Algorithm for codebook generation
2015
International audience; In order to address the issue of counterfeiting online, it is necessary to use automatic tools that analyze the large amount of information available over the Internet. Analysis methods that extract information about the content of the images are very promising for this purpose. In this paper, a method that automatically extract the brand of objects in images is proposed. The method does not explicitly search for text or logos. This information is implicitly included in the Bag-of-Words representation. In the Bag-of-Words paradigm, visual features are clustered to create the visual words. Despite its shortcomings, k-means is the most widely used algorithm. With k-mea…
Vision system for defect imaging, detection, and characterization on a specular surface of a 3D object
2002
Abstract A vision system capable of imaging, detecting, and characterizing defects onto highly reflective, non-plane surfaces, is presented in this paper. Defects are typically dust, and hair located under the metallic layer of packaging products used in cosmetic industries. The vision system comprises an innovative lighting solution to reveal defects onto highly reflective non-plane surfaces. Several image acquisitions are performed to build a synthetic image, where defects clearly appear white on a mid-gray background. Our lighting system allows imaging defects on various-shaped objects. The vision system measures the defect size to make a decision on the product rejection. The authors as…
Deep Learning-Based Real-Time Object Detection in Inland Navigation
2019
International audience; Semi-autonomous and fully-autonomous systems must have knowledge about the objects in their environment to ensure a safe navigation. Modern approaches implement deep learning techniques to train a neural network for object detection. This project will study the effectiveness of using several promising algorithms such as Faster R-CNN, SSD, and different versions of YOLO, to detect, classify, and track objects in near real-time fluvial domain. Since no dataset is available for this purpose in literature, we first started by annotating a dataset of 2488 images with almost 35 400 annotations for training the convolutional neural network architectures. We made this data s…
On the darker side of C++
1988
We discuss several negative features and properties of the C++ language, some common with C, others pertaining to C++ classes. Remedies are proposed for most of the latter ones, most of the former ones being feared to be already incurable. The worst class-related defects claimed in present C++ have to do with free store management. Some hints are given to programmers on how to avoid pitfalls.
Towards Diagrammatic Patterns
2008
This article presents the idea that the graphical representation (concrete syntax) of a visual language can be specified based on some pre-defined diagrammatic patterns. A diagram from the Specification and Description Language (SDL) is used as illustration.
LCL - A Graphical Meta-Language for Specification of Language Constraints
2015
The Object Constraint Language (OCL) is commonly used for constraints in meta-model-based language specifications. However, it may be advantageous to have a domain-specific constraint meta-language optimised for language specifications. A survey of OCL usage in language specifications has been performed, in order to gain an understanding of common constraint patterns. This is used as a starting point for defining a new meta-language for language constraints, Language Constraint Language (LCL), that has an intuitive graphical syntax.
Fuzzy Logic based model for self-optimizing energy consumption in IoT environment
2021
Energy optimization is essential in IoT environments due to energy constraints for some IoT components. In fact, energy consumption has a direct impact on IoT system lifetime, which represents an important Quality of Service (QoS) parameter for IoT environments. In order to extend the IoT system lifetime, energy consumption optimization should be considered in several IoT components. In this paper, we specify an energy self-optimizing mechanism allowing to minimize data transmission energy consumption of IoT objects. This mechanism enables selecting specific objects to send the desired data while minimizing the energy consumed for the corresponding communication. Our proposal is made of a M…
Extracting cloud motion from satellite image sequences
2004
This paper present a new technique for the estimation of cloud motion, using a sequence of infrared satellite images. It can be considered a challenging task due to the complexity of phenomena implied, as non-linear events and a non-rigid motion. In this circumstances most motion models are not suitable and new algorithms have to be developed. We propose a novel method, combining an Automatic Multilevel Thresholding for image segmentation, a Block Matching Algorithm (BMA) and a best candidate block search along with a vector median regularization.
Feature extraction and correlation for time-to-impact segmentation using log-polar images
2004
In this article we present a technique that allows high-speed movement analysis using the accurate displacement measurement given by the feature extraction and correlation method. Specially, we demonstrate that it is possible to use the time to impact computation for object segmentation. This segmentation allows the detection of objects at different distances.
