Helicobacter pylori and allergy: Update of research.

2015

Recently a lot of literature has been published about the possible preventive action of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) against allergy. The present review summarizes research data about the association between H. pylori and allergic diseases, as well as discusses possible hypotheses about the preventive action of H. pylori against atopy. There is evidence from observational studies to support a weak inverse association between prevalence of H. pylori infection and allergy. However, confounders like some unidentified socioeconomic factors, antibiotic use and others could bias the association. Although data from cohort studies point to a possible association of H. pylori with some of the all…

Effect of different cryosurgical protocols using liquid nitrogen on bone tissue: a histomorphological analyze

2011

The aim of the present experimental study was to evaluate the morphological effects of different liquid nitrogen cryosurgery protocols on bone tissue. The femoral diaphyses of 42 Wistar rats were exposed to three local and sequential applications of liquid nitrogen for 1 or 2 min, intercalated with periods of 5 min of passive thawing. The animals were sacrificed after 1, 2, 4 and 12 weeks and the specimens obtained were processed and analyzed histomorphologically. Histologically, an increase in bone necrosis was observed for the two protocols in the second week after cryotherapy. A significant osteogenic phase was observed after 4 weeks. Moreover, complete remodeling process was encountered…

Mediterranean diet and adiposity in children and adolescents: A systematic review

2021

Our aim was to summarize, through a systematic review, the current evidence from dietary intervention and observational studies on the impact of adherence to the Mediterranean diet on adiposity markers and obesity in children and adolescents. We searched Medline up to June 1, 2021 for the identification of intervention and observational studies meeting the inclusion criteria, following the PRISMA statement. We included 55 articles: 8 intervention studies and 47 observational studies. Three trials report a beneficial effect of the dietary intervention, whereas two did not, and three did not compare with a control. All observational studies were cross-sectional, and only five studies also inc…

Usefulness of complementary test in the study of patients with chronic abdominal pain.

2021

Introduction: Chronic abdominal pain (CAP) in children is a symptom that frequently leads to a visit to the paediatrician, which affects family life and occasionally requires the need to perform diagnostic studies (DS). The objective was to carry out a qualitative, quantitative, and economic analysis on the tests requested. Material and methods: An observational, prospective and multicentre study was conducted that included children between 4–15 years old affected by CAP. The difference between organic and functional disorders was taken into account. The following variables were collected: history, warning signs and symptoms, DS, and the cost of these. Results: The study included 235 childr…

LMA Supreme™ and Ambu® AuraGain™ in anesthetized adult patients: a prospective observational study

2017

BACKGROUND Second-generation laryngeal masks with gastric access are increasingly used in daily practice and expand the indications for laryngeal masks in the OR. Only limited data exist comparing different types of laryngeal masks. We investigated the second-generation laryngeal masks LMA Supreme™ and Ambu® AuraGain™ in a clinical setting. We hypothesized that the two devices would be comparable in terms of success rate and airway complications. METHODS After approval from the local ethics committee, data were collected in a prospective trial. Endpoints were success rate, time to insertion and airway morbidity. Anesthesiologists used either the Supreme (Teleflex Medical GmbH) or Gain (Ambu…

Change of COPD maintenance medication over two years in a large real life cohort: The DACCORD study

2016

Introduction Database studies suggest a steady intensification of COPD maintenance medication, with the majority of patients eventually receiving a LABA/LAMA/ICS combination. However, such studies include generally only data on medication use. Here, we analysed data from the ongoing, non-interventional, observational DACCORD study to determine whether there was a correlation between baseline GOLD 2011 category and change in medication use over 2 years. Methods This abstract presents data on medication use at baseline and at 1 and 2 years, by baseline GOLD 2011 category (A,B,C and D with symptoms evaluated using the COPD Assessment Test). Results 3315 patients with COPD have completed the 2 …

LATE-BREAKING ABSTRACT: Phenotypes of COPD in central and Eastern Europe - The POPE study

2015

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) represents a major health problem in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries. However, data regarding symptom load and clinical phenotypes of patients with COPD in CEE remain largely unknown. Methods: Participation in the POPE Study (a multicentre, observational cross-sectional survey) was offered to consecutive outpatients with stable COPD in 11 CEE countries if they fulfilled the following criteria: age ≥ 40 years, smoking history ≥ 10 pack-years, post-bronchodilator (BD) FEV 1 /FVC Results: 3504 patients (66 ± 8.7 yrs, 69% male, post-BD FEV 1 53.0 ± 17.5% predicted, Charlson comorbidity index 2.0 ± 1.4, and 1.2 ± 1.6 exacerb…

Anthropometric survey on children with Down syndrome

2017

Abstract Objective Study of anthropometric values in the medical records of a representative group of paediatric patients with Down syndrome, from the Down syndrome Unit of the Paediatric Department of Valencia's Hospital Clinico Universitario, from 2000 to 2014. Patients and methods Descriptive observational study in a group of 140 patients between 1 and 13 years. The group was configured based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. We extracted data about birth from their first visit, and subsequently patient data at the time of each visit (643 measurements). Results 103 patients with regular trisomy of Down syndrome were recorded and studied. There were 59 (57%) boys and 44 (43%) girls…

PO-0096 Clinical Effectiveness Of Idursulfase In Boys Aged 0–5 Years With Hunter Syndrome: 3-year Data From The Hunter Outcome Survey

2014

Background and aims Symptoms of Hunter syndrome typically become apparent at 2–4 years of age. Previous analyses have demonstrated improvements in certain clinical measures in young patients receiving idursulfase (Shire); however, data on long-term idursulfase use in these patients remain limited. This analysis used data available in the Hunter Outcome Survey (HOS), a global, observational registry sponsored by Shire, to investigate long-term effectiveness of idursulfase in boys with Hunter syndrome aged 0–5 years. Methods As of January 2014, 260/564 males followed prospectively in HOS had received ≥1 idursulfase infusion (excluding those who had received a bone marrow transplant or were en…

Dental approach for Apert syndrome in children : a systematic review

2017

Background Apert Syndrome (AS), or type I acrocephalosyndactyly, is a rare, congenital craniosynostosis condition resulting from missense mutations in the gene encoding fibroblast growth factor receptor 2. It is characterized by three specific clinical features: brachycephalic skull; midface hypoplasia, and limb abnormalities (syndactyly of hands and feet). The disorder exhibits variable presentations in bones, brain, skin, internal organs, and in the oral/maxillofacial region. The aim of the present paper was to show the main results from a systematic review of AS. Material and Methods A search of the literature was performed from April to June 2016 in five electronic databases. Clinical i…
