Hypoxia-stimulated expression of angiogenic growth factors in cervical cancer cells and cervical cancer-derived fibroblasts

2001

It is generally accepted that local growth of solid tumors and their ability to establish distant metastases are dependent on the formation of new blood vessels arising from preexisting ones (angiogenesis). The angiogenic response of the host is mediated by angiogenic molecules that are released from cancer and normal stroma cells, especially fibroblasts. The goal of the present study was to quantitatively compare the expression of the two most important angiogenic growth factors (VEGF, angiogenin) of cervical cancer cells (HeLa and Me-180) with that of cervical cancer-derived fibroblasts (from one tumor/patient) under defined normoxic and hypoxic conditions in vitro. The growth kinetics of…

Dopamine agonist administration causes a reduction in endometrial implants through modulation of angiogenesis in experimentally induced endometriosis

2009

Survival of newly implanted retrograde-shed endometrial tissue during menstruation in an ectopic location requires an adequate blood supply. This suggests that angiogenesis is a prerequisite for the development of endometriosis and that its inhibition may be a target for preventing development. Previous studies have shown that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a heparin-binding glycoprotein, has an essential role in angiogenesis. The main regulatory factor for angiogenesis appears to be binding of VEGF to its type-2 receptor (VEGFR-2). Cabergoline (Cb2) and other dopamine agonists promote endocytosis of the VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) in endothelial cells, thereby preventing VEGF-VEG…

New Sperm Morphology Analysis in Equids : Trumorph ® Vs Eosin-Nigrosin Stain

2021

Equine Reproduction Service. Department of Animal Medicine and Surgery. Veterinary Faculty. Autonomous University of Barcelona. National Agency for Research and Development (ANID), Ministry of Education, Chile (2017/72180128). Secretary of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (SENESCYT)(CZ02-000507-2019) The evaluation of the male fertility potential is based on the analysis of the basic spermatic characteristics of concentration, motility and morphology. Thus, the study of sperm morphology is a fundamental element in the seminal analysis, but its real meaning has been biased by the techniques used for its evaluation. These techniques involve dehydration phases and subsequen…

A New Approach of Sperm Motility Subpopulation Structure in Donkey and Horse

2021

This study aimed to characterize the sperm kinematic values with high frames per second, to define the subpopulation structure of a horse and a donkey and compare them. A total of 57 fresh semen ejaculates (26 Spanish and 16 Arabian horse breeds and 10 donkeys) were collected and subsequently analyzed for kinematic parameters using the Computer-aided sperm motility analysis ISAS®v1.2 system and using a Spermtrack® 10-μm depth counting chamber. Sequences were recorded at 250 frames per second, and eight kinematic parameters were automatically evaluated. All kinematic parameters showed significant differences between a donkey and a horse and between horse breeds. All ejaculates evaluated show…

Unusual Presentation of Bilateral Carotid Artery Dissection: The Importance of Reasoning Outside the Box

2021

A bilateral internal carotid artery dissection presenting with atypical symptoms of cerebral hypoperfusion has been rarely reported, especially in the absence of obvious precipitating factors. A middle-aged woman presented to the emergency department with a 2-day-history of progressive left arm numbness and weakness, confusion, disorientation and clumsiness worsened by upright position. A cerebral hypoperfusion condition was hypothesized and confirmed by a CT angiography, which showed bilateral internal carotid dissection with uncertain etiology. Screening for predisposing conditions to spontaneous carotid arteries dissection was basically negative. Regarding potential precipitating factors…

Unterstützung klinisch-administrativer Aufgaben durch Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) - Möglichkeiten und Grenzen

2001

Personal digital assistants (PDAs) are increasingly used by many professional and private users. They replace and combine common calendars, directories, to-do-lists and much more. Supplemented by useful additional software they can assist the clinician in his daily routine work. This concerns typical medical information as well as administrative work but gets more importance with regard to the planned introduction of diagnosis related groups in Germany however. Exact coding of medical performance is essential for this future invoice system. How PDAs can be used convenient in this respect will be shown with examples from our department.

Standardization of sperm motility analysis by using CASA-Mot for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), European eel (Anguilla anguilla) and Siberian sturgeo…

2019

[EN] It is essential to define an optimized standard method to assess the fish sperm quality to minimize the differences between the results obtained by different laboratories. Only this optimization and standardization can make them useful from academia to industry. This study presents the validation of sperm motility assessment using a CASA-Mot system for three endangered diadromous fish species: European eel (Anguilla anguilla), Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii). To attain this goal, different technical and data processing methods were tested: 1) magnification lens (×10 and ×20), 2) Spermtrack® reusable chambers (10 and 20¿¿m depth) and 3) different f…

Robust Automated Assessment of Human Blastocyst Quality using Deep Learning

2018

AbstractMorphology assessment has become the standard method for evaluation of embryo quality and selecting human blastocysts for transfer inin vitro fertilization(IVF). This process is highly subjective for some embryos and thus prone to human bias. As a result, morphological assessment results may vary extensively between embryologists and in some cases may fail to accurately predict embryo implantation and live birth potential. Here we postulated that an artificial intelligence (AI) approach trained on thousands of embryos can reliably predict embryo quality without human intervention. To test this hypothesis, we implemented an AI approach based on deep neural networks (DNNs). Our approac…
