Timing of cell division in human cleavage-stage embryos is linked with blastocyst formation and quality

2012

Noninvasive markers of embryo quality are being sought to improve IVF success. The present study aimed to discover possible associations between embryo division kinetics in the cleavage stage, the subsequent ability of human embryos to reach the blastocyst stage and the resulting blastocyst morphology. A retrospective cohort study analysed 834 embryos from 165 oocyte donation couples using a time-lapse monitoring system that allowed the recording of the exact timings for key events related to embryo development. Timing parameters were categorized into four quartiles. The probability of an embryo developing to a blastocyst was linked to a strict chronology of development. To further evaluate…

The Use of Lower or Higher Than Recommended Doses of Folic Acid Supplements during Pregnancy Is Associated with Child Attentional Dysfunction at 4–5 …

2021

We assessed the association between the use of lower- and higher-than-recommended doses of folic acid supplements (FAs) during pregnancy and attentional function in boys and girls at age of 4–5. We analyzed data from 1329 mother-child pairs from the mother-child cohort INfancia y Medio Ambiente Project (INMA) study. Information on FAs use during pregnancy was collected in personal interviews at weeks 12 and 30, and categorized in &lt

Removal of annexin V–positive sperm cells for intracytoplasmic sperm injection in ovum donation cycles does not improve reproductive outcome: a contr…

2014

Objective To determine the effect of removing presumptive apoptotic sperm cells from samples from unselected males by means of magnetic activated cell sorting (MACS) on live-birth delivery rates after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in couples undergoing ovum donation (OD). Design Prospective, randomized, triple-blinded, and controlled study. Setting Private university-affiliated IVF center. Patient(s) A total of 237 infertile couples undergoing ICSI as part of an OD program. Intervention(s) Semen specimens from the control group were prepared by swim-up. Samples from the study group were prepared by swim-up followed by MACS and incubation with annexin V–conjugated microbeads to rem…

Clinical experience and perinatal outcome of blastocyst transfer after coculture of human embryos with human endometrial epithelial cells: a 5-year f…

2003

Abstract Objective To evaluate the reproductive and neonatal outcome of blastocyst transfer after coculture with human endometrial epithelial cells in IVF and oocyte donation. Design Retrospective study. Setting Private assisted reproductive center. Patient(s) Two hundred sixty women undergoing IVF and 469 oocyte recipients. Intervention(s) IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and transfer of at least one blastocyst after coculture with human endometrial epithelial cells. Main outcome measure(s) Blastocyst formation rate, implantation and pregnancy rates, neonatal outcome, and congenital birth defects. Results Among patients who had transfer with their own oocytes, 1,193 of 2,349 …

Successful pregnancy and childbirth after intracytoplasmic sperm injection with calcium ionophore oocyte activation in a globozoospermic patient

2007

Objective To check the effectiveness of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) combined with assisted oocyte activation (AOA) in a globozoospermic patient. Design Case report. Setting Instituto Valenciano de Infertilidad, Valencia, Spain. Patient(s) A patient with globozoospermia. Intervention(s) ICSI was administered in 14 oocytes. ICSI combined with AOA, in which a small amount of calcium was injected followed by calcium ionophore exposure, was done in 9 oocytes. Main Outcome Measure(s) Fertilization rate and embryo quality was assessed in both groups. Result(s) Chemical activation increased fertilization rate (55.6% vs. 35.7%) and the number of embryos with less multinucleation on day 2…

The significance of sperm DNA oxidation in embryo development and reproductive outcome in an oocyte donation program: a new model to study a male inf…

2008

Objective: One byproduct resulting from free radical damage is the DNA hydroxylation also known as DNA oxidation. Our aim with this work was to determine the relevance of sperm DNA oxidation on embryo quality in oocyte donation cycles. Design: We prospectively studied pairs of oocyte donation cycles, i.e., the same oocyte donors, donating to two recipients, where the only difference between the two treatments was the use of a different sperm sample. Setting: University-affiliated private IVF setting. Patient(s): Infertile male partners from couples undergoing oocyte donation cycles (n=38): 76 semen aliquots analyzed before and after semen processing by swim up. Intervention(s): None. Main O…

Pre-eclampsia--a workshop report.

2004

The aims of this workshop on pre-eclampsia were two-fold. The first half aimed to provide an update on the influence of oxygen and oxidative stress on the development of preeclampsia. The session, with four speakers, was chaired by Fiona Lyall. The second part of the workshop was more clinically orientated addressing new patho-physiological and clinical findings. This session also had four speakers and was chaired by Rudi Seufert.

Effect of continuous oestradiol-medroxyprogesterone administration on plasma lipids and lipoproteins

1991

Plasma lipids and lipoproteins were measured in 21 post-menopausal women after 4 and 8 months of continuous treatment with an orally administered combination of oestradiol and medroxyprogesterone acetate. The mean concentrations of cholesterol and low-density-lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol were reduced by 12% (P less than 0.001) and 11% (P less than 0.01), respectively, after 4 months of treatment and by 9% (P less than 0.05) and 12% (P less than 0.05) after 8 months. The mean level of high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol showed an initial fall of 5% (P less than 0.05) after 4 months and then increased by 13% (P less than 0.05) after 8 months of treatment. The plasma triglycerides leve…
