Teoria e retorica delle immagini. Tzvetan Todorov e la pittura

2014

On Theodor Adorno

2016

I have never fully bought (albeit often tempted to) into the simplistic and somewhat caricaturist versions of Theodor Adorno’s ideas about the cultural industry and the alienated consumer given by some supporters of the “active” audience. Even more so today, when digital social media seem to make participatory culture, creativity and active citizenship a dream coming true. I have always thought instead that, beyond the traps of binary thinking (powerful media vs active audience), there is a much more complex story to be told and that we, as cultural analysts and media literacy educators, need to patiently reconstruct – with all possible evidence coming from empirical data – the intricacy of…

La Sicilia crocevia diplomatico nella biblioteca diodorea

2015

In this work, the role of the Sicily in the field ofthe diplomatic relationships inside Mediterranean area from fifth to fourth century b.C. was examined. Diodoro Siculo hystorian has been the preferred reference, and in particular, his XI-XIII books of the Hystoric Library were the source of the most important and, in some cases exclusive, information about Sicily hidtory from 480 to Dionisio I tyranny. In the reviewing of the embassies, specific attention was devoted to the diplomatc efforts featured not only by their testimonial value, but also by evidencing a western historiograph more informed than the metropolitan one, also identified as world-wide or in attendance of local propaganda…

Human awareness and uses of odor cues in everyday life: Results from a questionnaire study in children

2008

The Children's Olfactory Behavior in Everyday Life questionnaire was developed to assess attention to, and uses of, odors in real-life situations, and to evaluate individual variations. The tool comprises 16 items prompting self-reports of active seeking, awareness and affective reactivity to odors of food, people and the environment. Children (102 girls, 113 boys) aged 6–10 years participated in the study. The results revealed that girls were significantly more olfaction-oriented than boys, especially towards the odors of people, self and the environment. An increasing ability of children to describe the odor facets of their perceptual world was found between 6 and 10 years, partly due to …

Chemosensory Receptors in the Larval Maxilla of Papilio hospiton

2022

Among the butterflies of the genus Papilio (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), Papilio hospiton (Géné) has a geographical distribution limited to the Mediterranean islands of Sardinia (Italy) and Corsica (France). This is mainly due to the host range that includes only a few plant species of Apiaceae and Rutaceae growing on these islands. In a previous electrophysiological investigation conducted on the maxillary gustatory system of larvae of P. hospiton and its closely phylogenetically related species Papilio machaon, a significantly higher spike activity was shown for the gustatory neurons of lateral and medial styloconic sensilla in P. hospiton when bitter compounds were tested. This effect was…

Characterization of Odor-Active Compounds in Aromatic Caramel by GC-Olfactometry and GC-Mass Spectrometry

2014

The aim of this study was to characterize odor-active compounds and sensory properties of four aromatic caramels. The volatile fraction was isolated by solvent assisted flavor evaporation (SAFE) and analyzed by GC/MS and GC/O with the detection frequency method. Furthermore, descriptive sensory profiles were performed with a panel of 10 trained assessors. Of the 77 odorant areas detected (detection frequency≥33%), 40 were associated to identified molecules. GC/O data were correlated to sensory attributes by partial least squares regression (PLSR). Oxygenated heterocycles, cyclopentenone derivatives, and carboxylic acids appeared as the most important contributors in caramel aroma.

Role of Wood Macromolecules on Selective Sorption of Phenolic Compounds by Wood

2008

Wood is a complex structure of various macromolecules, mainly cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Although the sorption process of some organic compounds by wood has been elucidated, the relative contribution of its different fractions in the sorption mechanism is not clearly determined. Certain works predict the amount of organic compounds sorbed on wood as a direct relationship to its lignin fraction. All wood macromolecules, however, seem to have the capacity to sorb organic compounds. Sorption of phenolic compounds on individual wood macromolecules has been studied and compared to that on wood. Wood-water partition coefficients ( K wood) for phenolic volatiles and their sorption rates…
