Role of odorant-binding proteins in Drosophila melanogaster chemosensory perception

Chemoperception is used by animals to detect nutritive food and avoid toxic compounds. It also allows animals to identify suitable ecological niche and mating partners. Like many other insects, Drosophila melanogaster possesses a very sensitive chemosensory ability and can detect and discriminate a wide panel of semiochemicals. Chemosensory detection is mostly mediated by olfactory and gustatory systems involving several multigene chemoreceptor families. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan taideteoksen roolia suomalaisessa yhteisötaiteessa saksalaisen kriittisen koulukunnan näkökulmasta. Yhteisötaide on 1990-luvulta alkaen vahvistunut taidemuoto, jossa taiteilija työskentelee yhdessä tietyn ihmisryhmän kanssa. Ensimmäisiä yhteisötaideprojekteja Suomessa toteutettiin 1970-luvulla lähiöissä. 2000-luvulla yhteisötaiteessa on alettu käyttää ilmaisumuotona valokuvaa. Tässä tutkielmassa esimerkkeinä käytetään teoksia Maailman ihanin tyttö, Lempipaikka ja Be your enemy. Multimodal Aposematic Defenses Through the Predation Sequence

Aposematic organisms warn predators of their unprofitability using a combination of defenses, including visual warning signals, startling sounds, noxious odors, or aversive tastes. Using multiple lines of defense can help prey avoid predators by stimulating multiple senses and/or by acting at different stages of predation. We tested the efficacy of three lines of defense (color, smell, taste) during the predation sequence of aposematic wood tiger moths (Arctia plantaginis) using blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) predators. Highly sensitive olfactory biosensors for the detection of volatile organic compounds by surface plasmon resonance imaging

International audience; Nowadays, monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is very important in various domains. In this work, we aimed to develop sensitive olfactory biosensors using odorant binding proteins (OBPs) as sensing materials. Three rat OBP3 derivatives with customized binding properties were designed and immobilized on the same chip for the detection of VOCs in solution by surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi). We demonstrated that the proteins kept their binding properties after the immobilization under optimized conditions.
