Reinforced concrete (RC) jacketing is becoming increasingly common among the different retrofit techniques for poor RC members, due to its economical and practical advantages. Experimental investigations in the literature have shown that the actual axial capacity of RC jacketed members can be substantially lower than that analytically evaluated by adapting the most common theoretical models for confined concrete. Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E UrbanaThe essay questions the future's possibilities to operate on the buildings of the second half of the twentieth century according to the Italian Code of Cultural Heritage (2004-2011). When arguing how to encourage the re-use of these artifacts which are often marked by short-life technology cycles obsolescence and abandonment the ambiguities and inconsistencies of current legislative procedures deeply stress the cultural role of research experiences that use project-oriented methodologies. The comparison between some Italian and other European cases highlights the role of a design approach in the construction of a transformative protection perspective for the built matter of the second half of the twentieth century. In a framework aiming to encourage a reconciliation between the recent built environment and the new paradigms of sustainability and circular economy architecture must recognize re-cycle practices as a main theoretical and procedural node. To modernize the late Modern built environment with contemporary construction components is not simply a matter of technical knowledge and expertise: but a theme with theoretical density aesthetic and ethical values. The architectural project in this field today must ask for greater congruence between the bureaucratic and administrative levels and the real consistency of this corpus. It is a matter of identifying strategies to equip it with capabilities meanings and contents remembering that demolition wastes have unsustainable environmental costs and uncertain results concerning the necessary new attribution of political and semantic meaning that these places await.

Settore ICAR/21 - UrbanisticaIn a framework in which the crisis is globalized but unequal and in the absence of a welfare system capable of responding to the urgencies of the most marginalized contexts and social groups a response to the new social and individual needs has been offered by networks of solidarity and from bottom-up mobilization practices that play a role of territorial agency often independently or in the absence of institutions. In the Palermo context a commitment made by a plurality of cultural subjects already active in the area gathered in a public assembly (Palermo si cura) during the period of the first lockdown gave rise to mutual aid actions to respond to the economic emergency and social and offer a proposal to cure the fragility of the city based not on charity but on the claim of a political dimension of collective action. Starting from the analysis of initiatives such as "Un sorriso per Ballarò" and "Abbiamo un (bi)sogno" the contribution analyzes the role the incidence and the fragility of these experiences in providing answers - often filling gaps - to a general interest and how these processes of value creation can hopefully contribute to the construction of local government policies capable of addressing emerging issues.

Techno-economic assessment of multi-effect distillation process for the treatment and recycling of ion exchange resin spent brines

Abstract A treatment chain including nanofiltration, crystallization and multi-effect distillation (MED) is for the first time proposed for the treatment of an effluent produced during the regeneration of Ion Exchange resins employed for water softening. The goal is to recover the minerals and to restore the regenerant solution to be reused in the next regeneration cycle. The mechanical properties of the plant cell wall play an important role in communication, differentiation and growth of plant cells. In particular, the expansive growth of plant cells is only possible because the material that forms the plant cell wall yields at a specific stress level, allowing for an increase in cell wall area. This process can be defined in mechanical terms as the relaxation of the wall stress.
