Building and Testing a Comparative Interface on Northwest European Historical Parliamentary Debates : Relative Term Frequency Analysis of British Rep…
2022
Tensions between the people and parliament over representation are a normal feature of representative democracies. In this paper, we demonstrate how digital humanities analysis tools help in answering questions about the timing of debates on popular representation, tensions over its realization, and representatives’ changing perceptions on their parliamentary role. Our long-term approach to the conceptual history of political representation is based on the analysis of digitized parliamentary debates as nexuses of multi-sited political discourse. We combine computer-assisted distant and context-sensitive close reading to consider diachronic trends and synchronic political struggles surroundi…

Demokracja medialna w III RP
2018
W artykule przedstawiono pokrótce podejście Polaków do demokracji. Następnie opisano pojęcie demokracji medialnej i mediatyzację polityki. Końcowa część artykułu została poświęcona przybliżeniu wpływu sondaży oraz opinii publicznej na decyzje wyborcze obywateli.

A phenomenological research of democracy education in a Finnish primary-school
2023
This phenomenological research examines democracy education and the conditions contributing to young students’ democratic agency. The dataset includes interview and observation data from a school and educational decision-makers. The findings from the iterative analysis highlight the contradictions between democracy education as an ideal and opportunities for democratic agency. One significant contradiction was the expectation that young pupils should be competent democratic agents before being offered opportunities to act democratically. Young students deemed to possess the greatest competencies were offered opportunities to learn about democracy in action, whereas most students were expect…
"There Are No Women and They All Play Mercy" : Understanding and Explaining (the Lack of) Women’s Presence in Esports and Competitive Gaming
2018
In this paper, we explore women’s participation in esports and competitive gaming. We will analyze two different types of research material: online questionnaire responses by women explaining their reluctance to participate in esports, and online forum discussions regarding women’s participation in competitive Overwatch. We will examine the ways in which women’s participation – its conditions, limits and possibilities – are constructed in the discussions concerning women gamers, how women are negotiating their participation in their own words, and in what ways gender may affect these processes. Our findings support those made in previous studies concerning esports and competitive gaming as …
Gender and Toxic Meritocracy in Competitive Overwatch: Case “Ellie”
2022
AbstractThis chapter examines toxic meritocracy in relation to gender in competitive Overwatch, asking how gender affects a player’s opportunities for engagement in that scene. It analyzes online news stories and community discussions concerning “Ellie” – a fabricated competitive woman gamer created as a “social experiment” by a man player. The confluences between gender and toxic meritocracy become visible in the assumption there must be an experienced man gamer behind the battletag, the gender-based harassment targeted at Ellie, and the reflections on the importance of setting an example as the first team taking a woman player for Contenders. The analysis shows that despite a strong belie…
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) in Cameroon : realities and prospects
2010
For a long time, Cameroon was a success story in the context of Africa’s development. Unfortunately, the economic crises of the eighties and early nineties led to the failure of the development strategies that had been pursued until then, resulting in a severe deterioration of the country’s economy and the living standards of the Cameroonian people (Mentan, 2003). However, this country possesses significant oil wealth which if properly managed can generate abundant revenue to boost economic growth and fund anti-poverty measures. In 2005, Cameroon adhered to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). A proper implementation of this initiative will improve transparency in the c…

Obywatelska inicjatywa ustawodawcza we Włoszech
2019
System demokratyczny daje obywatelom możliwość uczestniczenia w życiu publicznym na różnych płaszczyznach. Inicjatywa ludowa, jako narzędzie demokracji bezpośredniej, pozwala ogółowi obywateli podejmować decyzje państwowe w sposób bezpośredni. Włosi uzyskali wraz z nową konstytucją, która weszła w życie 22 grudnia 1947 r. Ponadto konstytucja zagwarantowała prawa obywatelskie, rozbudowała kompetencje samorządu terytorialnego, zinstytucjonalizowała rolę partii politycznych, czy wprowadziła instytucję Trybunału Konstytucyjnego. Propozycję projektu inicjatywy ludowej może złożyć grupa 50.000 obywateli. Niemniej jednak autorami propozycji ustawodawczej mogą być jedynie obywatele Włoch figurujący…
