Different adhesins for type IV collagen on Candida albicans: identification of a lectin-like adhesin recognizing the 7S(IV) domain

Adherence of the opportunistic pathogen Candida albicans to basement membrane (BM) proteins is considered a crucial step in the development of candidiasis. In this study the interactions of C. albicans yeast cells with the three main domains of type IV collagen, a major BM glycoprotein, were analysed. C. albicans adhered to the three immobilized domains by different mechanisms. Adhesion to the N-terminal cross-linking domain (7S) required the presence of divalent cations, whereas interaction with the central collagenous domain (CC) was cation-independent. Neuraminidase deficiency presenting as non-immune hydrops fetalis

A newborn infant with oedema, ascites and hepatosplenomegaly is described. In ascites fluid foamy macrophages were found, in a liver biopsy cytoplasmic inclusions and membrane-bound vacuoles were seen. Furthermore the child excreted excessive amounts of sialic acid-rich oligosaccharides in the urine, and therefore a neurovisceral degenerative disorder was assumed. The diagnosis of sialidosis was confirmed by enzymatic assay in cultured fibroblasts, in which a complete deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme neuraminidase could be demonstrated. E-selectin modulates the malignant properties of T84 colon carcinoma cells.

The extravasation of metastatic cells is regulated by molecular events involving the initial adhesion of tumor cells to the endothelium and subsequently the migration of cells in the host connective tissue. E-selectin on endothelial cells and sialyl Lewis X carbohydrate component on tumor cells are mainly involved in the adhesion of colon carcinoma cells to the endothelium of target organ. Rat mammary-gland transferrin: nucleotide sequence, phylogenetic analysis and glycan structure

The complete cDNA for rat mammary-gland transferrin (Tf) has been sequenced and also the native protein isolated from milk in order to analyse the structure of the main glycan variants present. A lactating-rat mammary-gland cDNA library in lambda gt10 was screened with a partial cDNA copy of rat liver Tf and subsequently rescreened with 5′ fragments of the longest clones. This produced a 2275 bp insert coding for an open reading frame of 695 amino acid residues. This includes a 19-amino acid signal sequence and the mature protein containing 676 amino acids and one N-glycosylation site in the C-terminal domain at residue 490. Xylan-degrading enzymes are crucial for the deconstruction of hemicellulosic biomass, making the hydrolysis products available for various industrial applications such as the production of biofuel. To determine the substrate specificities of these enzymes, we prepared a collection of complex xylan oligosaccharides by automated glycan assembly. Highly regioselective synthesis of a 3-O-sulfonated arabino Lewisa asparagine building block suitable for glycopeptide synthesis

Using the stannylene method, the trisaccharide 2-acetamido-3-O-[6-O-benzyl-beta-D-galactopyranosyl]-4-O-[2,3,4-tri-O-benzyl-beta-D-arabinopyranosyl]-6-O-benzyl-2-deoxy-beta-D-glucopyranosyl azide was regioselectively sulfonated and, after reduction of the anomeric azide, coupled to Fmoc alpha-allyl aspartate. After Pd(0)-catalyzed deallylation, the sulfatyl Lewis(a) asparagine building block was obtained, suitable for solid-phase glycopeptide synthesis applying the fluoride labile PTMSEL linker system.

This study tested the safety and efficacy of a starter infant formula containing Limosilactobacillus (L.) reuteri DSM 17938 and supplemented with 2’-fucosyllactose (2’FL).
