A non-linear Ritz method for the analysis of low velocity impact induced dynamics in variable angle tow composite laminates

2021

Abstract Variable angle tow (VAT) laminates feature composite layers reinforced by fibres following continuous curved paths and offer a wide structural design space for the manufacturing of composite components. In this work, a formulation for the analysis of the impact-induced dynamics in VAT laminated plates is proposed, implemented and tested in this work. The method is based on the adoption of first order shear deformation kinematics and includes von Karman non-linear strains. The discrete system is obtained by employing a pb-2 Ritz series expansion into the Hamilton’s variational statement, while the impact loading is modelled through Hertzian contact law. The resulting non-linear gove…

Potentialities of microfibers for non linear optics

2010

Micro- and nanofibers present attractive optical properties and may be used in a variety of structures and devices. We report in this work the first global study on the non linear properties of these microfibers: an adequate source is built and its characteristics are described, our first results with a silica loop resonator are presented. Third harmonic generation is obtained in these conditions, however, the low intrinsic non linear index prevents the generation of large non linear effects. The use of highly non linear materials, such as soft glasses, is therefore discussed, with their potentialities and the challenges their integration with standard microfibers represent.

The Be/X-ray transient 4U0115+63/V635 Cassiopeiae : II. Outburst mechanisms

2001

We present multi-wavelength long-term monitoring observations of V635 Cas, the optical counterpart to the transient X-ray pulsar 4U0115+63. The evolution of emission lines and photometric magnitudes indicates that the Be star undergoes relatively fast ( ~3 - 5yr) quasi-cyclic activity, losing and reforming its circumstellar disc. We show that the general optical, infrared and X-ray behaviour can be explained by the dynamical evolution of the viscous circumstellar disc around the Be star. After each disc-loss episode, the disc starts reforming and grows until it reaches the radius at which the resonant interaction of the neutron star truncates it. At some point, the disc becomes unstable to …

The 30 Year Search for the Compact Object in SN 1987A

2018

Despite more than 30 years of searches, the compact object in Supernova (SN) 1987A has not yet been detected. We present new limits on the compact object in SN 1987A using millimeter, near-infrared, optical, ultraviolet, and X-ray observations from ALMA, VLT, HST, and Chandra. The limits are approximately 0.1 mJy ($0.1\times 10^{-26}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$) at 213 GHz, 1 Lsun ($6\times 10^{-29}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$) in optical if our line-of-sight is free of ejecta dust, and $10^{36}$ erg s$^{-1}$ ($2\times 10^{-30}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ Hz$^{-1}$) in 2-10 keV X-rays. Our X-ray limits are an order of magnitude less constraining than previous limits because we use a…

Femtosecond Raman time-resolved molecular spectroscopy

2004

International audience; The applicability of several femtosecond time resolved non-linear coherent techniques such as Raman induced polarization spectroscopy (RIPS), degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) and coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) for molecular spectroscopy is presented. All methods rely on the initial coherent excitation of molecular states producing wavepackets, whose time evolution is then measured. In the case of RIPS and DFWM only pure rotational transitions are involved, whereas in CARS vibrational states can be excited. First the methodology of concentration and temperature measurements using RIPS in gas mixtures involving N2, CO2, O2, and N2O is shown. In additi…

Self-organization of incoherent optical waves : Condensation, thermalization and repolarization

2019

The subject of this thesis concerns the study of phenomena of self-organization of incoherentoptical waves. This work is essentially theoretical and numerical and relies on different formalisms of waveturbulence theory, the Hamiltonian singularities, and different experiments. The first part of the thesis deals with the irreversible processes of thermalization and condensation ofincoherent waves. The phenomenon of condensation is characterized by the formation of a large scale co-herent structure (condensate) that remains immersed in a sea of small scale fluctuations (uncondensedparticules). In spite of the large propagation lengths required to reach the condensed equilibrium state, wehave i…

Background-free nonlinear Raman microscopy and spectroscopy at interfaces

2010

Gaussian focused beams exhibit specific properties that drive the emitted fields in nonlinear optical microscopy. We discuss here how the basic field and object symmetry properties can be favorably used to obtain background-free images and spectra in third-order nonlinear optical processes. We concentrate here on coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), the non-linear analogue of Raman scattering. In CARS microscopy, the vibrational related (“resonant”) signal is often overwhelmed by an electronic related (“nonresonant”) background. Various strategies have been implemented to circumvent the undesirable effects of this nonresonant background: picosecond pulse excitation, time resolved, …

Cross-phase modulation effects in normal dispersive fibers and their applications

2018

In this Ph.D., physical effects arising from cross-phase modulation between twoorthogonally polarized signals propagating in normal dispersion fibers arestudied and some of their applications investigated.First, a 40-GHz pulse generator is designed by sending two orthogonallypolarized out-of-phase sinusoidal waves in a normally dispersive optical fiber.A large power imbalance between the two waves induces a periodic phasepotential for the weak replica which turns the normal dispersive defocusingregime into a focusing dynamics, thus compressing the sinusoidal wave intoshort and well-separated pulses.A signal sampler and magnifier was then designed using the same principle, sending a high powe…

Étude et manipulation de modes résonants en champ proche optique

2010

Within the quick nano-fabrication techniques evolution and the increasing needs in low space and energy opto-electronic functions on-chip integration, studies and control of electromagnetic resonances of sub-micrometric objects are crucial issues. One aim of this work was then to improve our knowledge of the light-matter interaction. To this end, optical near-field experiments and complementary numerical development of models have been performed to study electromagnetic resonances due to light-matter interaction in sub-micrometric resonators. As an introduction, the first part of the manuscript presents the main phenomena involved in near-field optical microscopy and the used SNOM operation…
