The implications of the local context in global virtual education

2012

This paper investigates how features in students’ everyday life influence their participation in online global collaboration, and it suggests that students’ local context should be recognised as a significant part of their educational space. In this exploratory case study of students engaged in a global online master’s programme, the discussion is organised under three main headings: the social, material, and cultural dimensions of students’ daily life. The paper shows how the influence of the students’ local contex…

International Master’s Degree Students’ Well-being at a Finnish University During COVID-19

2020

The rapid developments and consequences of the COVID-19 crisis for university students' well-being are presently being studied across the world. This study contributes to the growing discourse on university students' well-being by exploring changes in international Master's degree students' well-being in relation to the move to online teaching and learning at a Finnish university during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study draws on 37 answers to an open-ended question about remote teaching and learning at the end of a survey on university students' stress. The text data were analysed conducting a preliminary quantitative content analysis and a more detailed thematic analysis, from which two the…

La ficción de educar a distancia

2020

Instructor Presence in a Virtual Classroom

2021

Abstract Synchronous online learning platforms have been used actively during the COVID-19 period. They have opened possibilities for online learning and interaction, but have also posed new challenges for instructors. This article provides insights into one teacher’s interactions and examines how the instructor presence is expressed in the teachers’ activities in virtual classrooms in higher education. Instructor presence is investigated using the social and teaching presence indicators of the community of inquiry (CoI) framework. Twelve hours of interactions across six online classes were recorded, transcribed, and analysed using content analysis. The findings suggest that indicators of t…

Online gaming and prolonged self-isolation: evidence from Italian gamers during the COVID-19 outbreak

2021

Objective: The self-isolation measures employed during the COVID-19 pandemic made it difficult for basic needs to be met, thus increasing emotional distress. It has been suggested that socially meaningful online gaming buffered emotional distress during the lockdown. This study aimed to test the protective effect of online gaming during the lockdown and to investigate the differences between highly involved gamers (those who play videogames intensely without adverse consequences) and problematic gamers in this regard. Method: Capitalizing on a data collection that started before the pandemic, we adopted a cross-sectional between-groups study design in which gaming patterns, gaming-related v…

Unsupervised change detection with kernels

2012

In this paper an unsupervised approach to change detection relying on kernels is introduced. Kernel based clustering is used to partition a selected subset of pixels representing both changed and unchanged areas. Once the optimal clustering is obtained the estimated representatives (centroids) of each group are used to assign the class membership to all others pixels composing the multitemporal scenes. Different approaches of considering the multitemporal information are considered with accent on the computation of the difference image directly in the feature spaces. For this purpose a difference kernel approach is successfully adopted. Finally an effective way to cope with the estimation o…

Tailoring feedback in online assessment: Influence of learning styles on the feedback preferences and elaborated feedback effectiveness

2008

Design of feedback is a critical issue of online assessment development within Web-based Learning Systems (WBLSs). This paper examines the potential possibilities of tailoring the feedback that is presented to a student as a result of his/her preferences and responses to questions of an online test with respect to the individual learning styles (LS). The paper briefly reviews the main types of feedback that can be presented during online assessment and discusses the challenges in authoring and tailoring of feedback in WBLSs. We report the results of some recent experiments organized as online assessment of students through multiple-choice quizzes in which students were able to request diffe…

Learning-automaton-based online discovery and tracking of spatiotemporal event patterns.

2013

Discovering and tracking of spatiotemporal patterns in noisy sequences of events are difficult tasks that have become increasingly pertinent due to recent advances in ubiquitous computing, such as community-based social networking applications. The core activities for applications of this class include the sharing and notification of events, and the importance and usefulness of these functionalities increase as event sharing expands into larger areas of one's life. Ironically, instead of being helpful, an excessive number of event notifications can quickly render the functionality of event sharing to be obtrusive. Indeed, any notification of events that provides redundant information to the…

Connectivity Influences on Nonlinear Dynamics in Weakly-Synchronized Networks: Insights from Rössler Systems, Electronic Chaotic Oscillators, Model a…

2019

Natural and engineered networks, such as interconnected neurons, ecological and social networks, coupled oscillators, wireless terminals and power loads, are characterized by an appreciable heterogeneity in the local connectivity around each node. For instance, in both elementary structures such as stars and complex graphs having scale-free topology, a minority of elements are linked to the rest of the network disproportionately strongly. While the effect of the arrangement of structural connections on the emergent synchronization pattern has been studied extensively, considerably less is known about its influence on the temporal dynamics unfolding within each node. Here, we present a compr…

Non-linear dynamics of alpha and theta rhythm: correlation dimensions and Lyapunov exponents from healthy subject's spontaneous EEG.

1997

The aim of the present paper was to analyze some non-linear dynamic properties of the resting EEG from healthy subjects under eyes closed conditions. For this purpose we digitally filtered the spontaneous EEG in the theta (3-8 Hz) and alpha frequency range (8-13 Hz) and considered these independent rhythms as signals from a deterministic system. Under certain conditions non-linear dynamic systems are able to generate deterministic chaos, which means that similar causes do not produce similar effects. This phenomenon is called sensitive dependence on initial conditions. From different lead positions (F3, F4, Cz, P3, P4, O1 and O2) we calculated the so-called correlation dimension D2, which i…
