Being positive, being hopeful, being happy : young adults reflecting on their future in times of austerity
2020
The aim of this article is to analyse the ways in which young adults reflect on their futures. We are particularly interested in how they expect to organize their lives in conditions that seem to offer pessimistic rather than hopeful prospects. How does this happen under social conditions where the major public and individual concerns are with how young adults organize their material lives and how they earn sufficient livelihoods to become good citizens? What are the grounds for their future visions? In our analysis we use 40 interviews with young Finnish adults aged between 18 and 30. The respondents are students, as well as employed and unemployed young adults. Our findings show that the…
What happens when software developers are (un)happy
2017
The growing literature on affect among software developers mostly reports on the linkage between happiness, software quality, and developer productivity. Understanding happiness and unhappiness in all its components -- positive and negative emotions and moods -- is an attractive and important endeavor. Scholars in industrial and organizational psychology have suggested that understanding happiness and unhappiness could lead to cost-effective ways of enhancing working conditions, job performance, and to limiting the occurrence of psychological disorders. Mitä sinulle kuuluu? : lasten subjektiivisia kokemuksia omasta elämästään
2011
Tutkimuksessa tarkasteltiin lasten kokemuksia subjektiivisen hyvinvoinnin rakentumisen näkökulmasta. Hyvinvoinnin subjektiivista luonnetta pyrittiin lähestymään lasten turvallisuuden ja turvattomuuden kokemusten kautta. Tutkimusaineisto on kerätty kahdessa osassa. Ensimmäinen tutkimusaineisto kerättiin 4–6 -luokkalaisilta lapsilta anonyymien kirjoitelmien muodossa keväällä 2010. Kirjoitelmien aiheena oli ”Mitä Sinulle kuuluu, miten Sinulla menee?”. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa …
Bene vivere politice
2022
Abstract This chapter approaches the question of biopolitics in ancient political thought looking not at specific political techniques but at notions of the final aim of the political community. It argues that the “happiness” (eudaimonia, beatitudo) that constitutes the greatest human good in the tradition from Aristotle to Thomas Aquinas is not a “biopolitical” ideal, but rather a metabiopolitical one, consisting in a contemplative activity situated above and beyond the biological and the political. It is only with Thomas Hobbes that civic happiness becomes “biopolitically” identified with simple survival; for modernity, as Hannah Arendt puts it, mere being alive becomes the greatest human…
