Calculating the regional economic impact of the olympic games

This study introduces a methodological concept to combine the cost‐benefit analysis and input‐output models to create a new method to regionalize Olympic costs and benefits in order to define the economic impact at the regional level. This new form of analysis is used to calculate the regional economic impact of the Frankfurt Rhein/Main region, which bid to stage the 2012 Olympics. A generalised view of the Frankfurt case study shows patterns that are valid for all impact studies of major sport events. Finally a sensitivity analysis is used to determine critical variables.

ERP Post-implementation Issues in Small-and- Medium-Sized Enterprises

This paper focuses on ERP post-implementation issues in Small-and-Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs).We conducted a case study in a small Norwegian retail company. We studied the enterprise in the period after going live with their new ERP system. Certain challenges were observed such as security risks because of inaccurate configuration of the system, difficulties with operational issues such as sending invoices and getting sales reports, inaccurate inventory, insufficient training arrangement, workarounds, conflicting incentives among customer, reseller and consultant. Age and productivity as determinants of firm survival over the industry life cycle

AbstractThis paper contributes to fill the gap between the literature on the determinants of firm survival and the empirical works on the industry life cycle (ILC). Using a representative sample of Spanish firms with 10 or more employees over the period 1993–2009, the role played by firm age and productivity in firm survival is empirically analysed across three stages of the life cycle of forty-seven 3-digit manufacturing sectors. In the ‘early’ stage of the ILC, firm age is negatively correlated with hazard rates while firm productivity is not. DEA-like models for efficiency evaluation of specialized and interdependent units

Abstract The problem of evaluating the efficiency of a set of specialized and interdependent decision making subunits (DMSUs) that make up a larger decision making unit (DMU) is considered. The DMSUs are interdependent, in the sense that part of the output produced by each of them may be used as an input by the other ones. They are also specialized, hence non-homogeneous, as they may have not the same inputs and outputs. For this problem, some efficiency indexes are introduced, and they are shown to satisfy some basic properties.

The impact of training andad hocteams in industrial settings

This paper aims to reflect the use of training via ad hoc teams to adopt lean production practices. In our research, eleven automobile manufacturer suppliers implement training interventions to achieve better results through lean production, concluding that training helps companies to develop lean production systems and to improve performance indicators.

The effect of inventory record inaccuracy in information exchange supply chains

Abstract The goal of this paper is to quantify the impact of Inventory Record Inaccuracy on the dynamics of collaborative supply chains, both in terms of operational performance (i.e. order and inventory stability), and customer service level. To do so, we model an Information Exchange Supply Chain under shrinkage errors in the inventory item recording activity of their nodes, present the mathematical formulation of such supply chain model, and conduct a numerical simulation assuming different levels of errors. Nurse Scheduling Problem: An Integer Programming Model with a Practical Application

We use a binary integer programming model to formulate and solve a nurse scheduling problem (NSP) which maximally satisfies nurse preferences. In a practical application of a VA hospital, besides considering the scheduling of two types of nurses (registered nurses and licensed practical nurses), two other types of employees (nursing assistants and health care techs), one nurse manager, and a clinical nurse leader are also included in our model. Multiple Objective Analysis of Input-Output Models for Emergency Management

This paper shows how a visual, interactive, dynamic multiple objective linear programming decision support system can effectively be used for analyzing input-output models. We have applied our approach to studying the quantitative effects of economic or political crises to the Finnish economy. Examples of such crises are nuclear power plant accidents, trade embargoes, and international conflicts. An input-output model of the Finnish economy with 17 industries (sectors) is employed. Our system has been implemented on a microcomputer and is being used by the National Board of Economic Defense. Several typical case situations are discussed.
