New rules on driver licensing for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea: EU Directive 2014/85/EU.
2016
The widespread recognition that obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) represents an important risk factor for motor vehicle accidents (MVA), which is reversed by successful therapy with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), has led to a revision of annex III of the European Union (EU) directive on driving licences that is subject to mandatory implementation by all member states from December 31, 2015 [1]. This directive was the result of recommendations from a working group established by the Transport and Mobility Directorate of the European Commission in 2012 [2]. The directive states [1] Joint ERS/ESRS working group on the EU directive on issuing driving licences in obstructive sleep apno…
Quality control in the optical industry: From a work analysis of lens inspection to a training programme, an experimental case study
2007
A cognitive work analysis of quality inspection in the optical industry has been carried out in order to devise a training programme. The task concerned the inspection of high quality human eyeglass lenses. We conducted an experimental investigation of defect detection and acceptability decision-making tasks in 18 experts and novice inspectors. Detection and decision-making were investigated together and separately in two experimental sessions. We showed the effect of expertise on reaction times and errors, and we described the cognitive processes of novice inspectors. On the basis of the processing differences between the two groups, a training programme for new inspectors was devised and …
Continuous improvement of the quality management system within an automotion company in Romania
2021
Abstract In this article, the authors present a case study on the methodology used in the process of continuous improvement of the performance of the quality management system, carried out in a company belonging to the field of production of devices and automation systems. To start this process, the internal audit subsystem and the analysis process performed by the management were first streamlined. In order to improve the non-compliant processes, within the quality management system an improvement strategy was established based on the stages of the 6 sigma methodology, namely the DMAIC model. Following the application of the methodology proposed by the authors, improvements of the processe…
Contributions Regarding the Reduction of Production Costs for Brewing by Recovering and Reusing the Carbon Dioxide
2014
Abstract Nowadays in every field the main aim is to produce corresponding quality products at competitive prices for buyers. In addition to the multiple possibilities to reduce the brewing production cost, one of the most significant ways is to reduce the production cost by recovering the carbon dioxide (CO2) resulting from the fermentation of beer, taking into account the fact that the CO2 thus resulting is completely natural. This scientific paper presents a certain strategy based on costs, strategy which relies on the experience of the authors, on the economic impact of CO2 recovery resulting from the fermentation of beer and which reflects itself in the production cost and implicitly in…
Improving the management of potentially predictable hospital readmissions of the elderly and their quality of life through new icts
2013
3rd International Conference on the Elderly and New Technologies. III Jornadas Internacionales de Mayores y Nuevas Tecnologías. The ageing population is currently beginning to create economic repercussions, as ageing often implies an increase of health expenditure related to, specially, hospital admissions and/or unplanned readmissions and long term care services. The present paper deals with two strategies that could be implemented through the establishment and use of new technologies to avoid these increasing costs: 1) screening tools of health information systems aimed at identifying patients at risk of hospital readmissions or repeated use of health resources; and 2) new icts at elderly…
Use of Reinforcement Learning in Two Real Applications
2008
In this paper, we present two sucessful applications of Reinforcement Learning (RL) in real life. First, the optimization of anemia management in patients undergoing Chronic Renal Failure is presented. The aim is to individualize the treatment (Erythropoietin dosages) in order to stabilize patients within a targeted range of Hemoglobin (Hb). Results show that the use of RL increases the ratio of patients within the desired range of Hb. Thus, patients' quality of life is increased, and additionally, Health Care System reduces its expenses in anemia management. Second, RL is applied to modify a marketing campaign in order to maximize long-term profits. RL obtains an individualized policy depe…
GENETIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL VARIATION IN PERCEIVED EXERTION AND HEART RATE DURING BICYCLE ERGOMETER WORK
1977
The relative contributions of heredity and environment to the variance in heart rate (HR) and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) during the bicycle ergometer work were studied with 14 pairs of male (6 monozygous (MZ) and 8 dizygous (DZ)) and 22 pairs of female (8 MZ and 14 DZ) twins ranging in age from 11 to 20 years. The results showed for both sexes that no significant differences in the intrapair variances of HR and RPE could be observed between the MZ and DZ twin samples. Thus it was concluded that in contrast to several other parameters of the measurements of the physical work capacity HR and RPE are not influenced to any significant degree by the genetic factors.
Managing Greenhouse Gas Emissions for Airport Inventories: An Overview
2011
For some years now, problems relating to gas emissions that affect climate and result from human activities have assumed a global dimension of large importance. The climate is, indeed, influenced by the concentrations of some pollutants in the atmosphere; these pollutants trap the long wave radiation emitted by the Earth and alter the energy balance, causing an accentuation of the natural greenhouse effect. In this view an inventory of greenhouse gases can become the benchmark against which to measure the achievement of quantitative targets set at the political level in the fight against climate change. Contrary to a general inventory of emissions related with air quality objectives and loc…
The Traceability Study in the Process of Manufacturing the Cheese With Romano Hard Paste
2014
Abstract A constant concern of the scientific research in the field of food safety is the identification of methods, to determine in an objective way, the quality of the food, available on the market. The paper analyzes the traceability concept, the importance of traceability implementation of a traceability system, in an organization within the food chain.
Resilience practices and patient safety: a multiple case study
2017
Organizations’ resiliency is receiving more and more attention within the operations management academic community because of the general awareness regarding the impossibility to prevent any kind of failure/disaster that may occur in whatever work system. Although healthcare organizations everyday manage those operational failures which treat the patient safety, in healthcare management domain there is a “lack of knowledge” about resilience practices, even if few authors have studied similar concepts, such as the work-around practices. In this paper we present an exploratory study we have conducted within two Italian hospitals to comprehend the main capabilities which enable healthcare resi…
