Transconjunctival sutureless 25-Gauge versus 20-Gauge standard vitrectomy: correlation between corneal topography and ultrasound biomicroscopy measur…
2009
Purpose: To determine the correlation between corneal shape changes and ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) findings at the sclerotomy sites in conventional 20-gauge (G) pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and 25-G transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (TSV) and to compare the effectiveness of the two surgical methods. Design: Prospective, comparative, observational case series. Methods: Sixty consecutive eyes (60 patients) undergoing primary 3-port PPV. Thirty eyes (30 patients, group 20-G) were treated with 20-G standard PPV and 30 eyes (30 patients, group 25-G) with 25-G TSV. We compared healing of the sclerotomy sites in the two groups. We determined the correlation between corneal shape changes (…
Delayed Suprachoroidal Hemorrhage After Pars Plana Vitrectomy: Five-Year Results of a Retrospective Multicenter Cohort Study
2015
Purpose To determine the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage after vitrectomy. Design Retrospective multicenter cohort study. Methods All consecutive patients who underwent primary vitrectomy, from January 2009 to December 2014, at 4 tertiary vitreoretinal centers in Italy were enrolled. Patient demographics and systemic, ophthalmic, operative, and postoperative data from all centers were extracted from the electronic record system using standardized data collection forms. All eyes that developed delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage within 48 hours of the end of the vitrectomy were identified as the delayed suprachoroidal hemorrhage group; all other eyes …
URL]
Dupuytren's contracture: an update of biomolecular aspects and therapeutic perspectives.
2005
The so-called fibrogenic cytokines, able to induce the growth of fibroblasts and their differentiation into myofibroblasts and to stimulate their production of extracellular matrix, are involved in the genesis of Dupuytren’s contracture. Although many studies have been made of biomolecular aspects of palmar fibromatosis, practical applications from them are still far from imminent because of the real difficulty of blocking their action in vivo, even in a chronic, progressive lesion such as Dupuytren’s disease. Consequently, surgical excision of the palmar fascia still remains the treatment of choice.
Immunohistochemical markers for histopathological diagnosis and differentiation of acute cutaneous graft‐versus‐host disease
2021
Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is a major complication following stem-cell or solid-organ transplantation. Accurate diagnosis of cutaneous GvHD is challenging, given that drug eruptions and viral rashes may present with similar clinical/histological manifestations. Specific markers are not available. We performed the histological examination of biopsy samples from acute GvHD (aGvHD; n = 54), Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN; n = 27), maculopapular drug eruption (MDE; n = 26) and healthy controls (n = 26). Samples of aGvHD showed a decrease in Langerhans cells (LC, p = 0.0001) and an increase in macrophages (MΦ, p = 0.0001) compared to healthy skin. Compared to …
Use of photoplethysmography to determine gastrointestinal perfusion pressure: an experimental canine model.
2002
Objectives: To develop an experimental model to assess the parietal perfusion pressure (PPP) of the digestive tract using photoplethysmography. Materials and Methods: Twenty-two mongrel dogs were used. Progressive external compression was applied to the intestinal wall and the PPP was assessed with photoplethysmography. The study group was divided into two groups. In group 1 PPP was measured at the levels of the stomach, duodenum, jejunum and transverse colon. In group 2 PPP was measured after temporary occlusion of the truncal and marginal circulation of the jejunum to provide further variables. Results: The PPP decreased significant…
Tissue response to five commercially available peritoneal adhesion barriers-A systematic histological evaluation
2017
Separating wounded serosa by physical barriers is the only clinically approved adjunct for postoperative adhesion prevention. Since the optimal adhesion barrier has not been found, it is essential to improve our pathogenic understanding of adhesion formation and to compare the effects of different barrier materials on tissue and cells. Wistar rats underwent standardized peritoneal damage and were treated either with Seprafilm, Adept, Intercoat, Spraygel, SupraSeal or remained untreated as a control. 14 days postoperatively, the lesions were explanted and histomorphologically analyzed using the European ISO score to evaluate material implants. Striking differences between the material groups…
Student evaluation of clickers in a dental pathology course
2015
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the degree of satisfaction of students and teachers, and to determine whether the students notice improvements in learning and in the learning environment as a result of the use of clicker. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Descriptive study. Fifty-one students and 8 teachers participated in the use of clicker technology in 8 preclinical seminars in dental pathology. Students and teachers filled a three-domain questionnaire at the end of the preclinical course. We used the Mann-Whitney U-test to compare the results between the two groups. RESULTS: The domain "perception and expectation" showed the use of clickers to be simple and convenient for 80% …
Comparison of iceball diameter and temperature distribution achieved with 3-mm accuprobe cryoprobes in porcine and human liver tissue and human color…
2000
Abstract We aimed to assess the thermal profile and size of iceballs produced by Accuprobe cryoprobes in fresh porcine and human liver and human colorectal cancer liver metastases in vitro to allow better planning of cryosurgical treatment of liver metastases. Iceballs were produced by a 20-min single freeze cycle using 8-mm cryoprobes in pig liver in a waterbath at 37°C ( n = 8) and 3-mm cryoprobes in pig liver ( n = 8), human liver ( n = 3), and human colorectal cancer liver metastases ( n = 8). The iceball diameters and the temperatures at different distances from the cryoprobe were measured. Mean iceball diameters produced by 8-mm cryoprobes in pig liver were 56.3 mm and varied from 38.…
La historia a la calle: aprendizaje significativo y competencias desarrolladas con proyectos de aprendizaje en el entorno urbano
2019
[EN] In this paper is presented a teaching-learning project carried out in the Degree of History at the University of Valencia in which we are combining the service to the community with academic knowledge. The group of students carries out a history project developed in relation to the historical spaces of the urban environment to explain the city and the local context in relation to the global economic connections during the Early Modern period. This activity allows students to develop multiple skills that they can put into practice in their future jobs. The results indicate that they have been able to solve historical problems in an innovative and creative way, allowing them to acquire a…
