Tunable invisibility cloaking by using isolated graphene-coated nanowires and dimers

2017

AbstractWe investigate, both theoretically and numerically, a graphene-coated nano-cylinder illuminated by a plane electromagnetic wave in the far-infrared range of frequencies. We have derived an analytical formula that enables fast evaluation of the spectral window with a substantial reduction in scattering efficiency for a sufficiently thin cylinder. This polarization-dependent effect leads to tunable resonant invisibility that can be achieved via modification of graphene chemical potential monitored by the gate voltage. A multi-frequency cloaking mechanism based on dimer coated nanowires is also discussed in detail.

Overview of radiation induced point defects in silica-based optical fibers

2019

International audience; Silica-based optical fibers, fiber-based devices and optical fiber sensors are today integrated in a variety of harsh environments associated with radiation constraints. Under irradiation, the macroscopic properties of the optical fibers are modified through three main basic mechanisms: the radiation induced attenuation, the radiation induced emission and the radiation induced refractive index change. Depending on the fiber profile of use, these phenomena differently contribute to the degradation of the fiber performances and then have to be either mitigated for radiation tolerant systems or exploited to design radiation detectors and dosimeters. Considering the stro…

Structural and Optical Properties of Novel Surfactant Coated TiO2–Ag Based Nanoparticles

2010

Stable dispersions of surfactant-coated TiO2–Ag based nanoparticles in apolar medium have been prepared by performing sequentially the hydrolysis of titanium(IV) isopropoxide and the reduction of Ag? in the confined space of sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate (NaAOT) reverse micelles. Depending on the sequence length, this novel procedure allowed the synthesis of semiconductor–metal nanoparticles, nominally indicated as TiO2/Ag, TiO2/Ag/TiO2, and TiO2/Ag/TiO2/ Ag, stabilized by a monolayer of oriented surfactant molecules. The structural characterization of these nanoparticles has been performed by High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), while optical properties were …

Optical properties of nanocrystalline-coatedY2O3:Er3+, Yb3+ obtained by mechano-chemical and combustion synthesis.

2009

International audience; Y2O3:Er3+, Yb3+ nanocrystals have been obtained by ball milling and using a combustion synthesis procedure. In both cases the nanocrystals have been successfully coated with SiO2 following the Stöber method. The average size of the as-synthesized nanoparticles has been estimated from X-ray diffraction patterns and transmission electron microscopy images. The dependence of the optical properties of these samples on synthesis procedure or dopant concentration has been investigated. Emission, excitation and lifetime measurements have been carried out. Upconversion luminescence has been detected in all samples and an enhancement of the red to green emission ratio has bee…

Enhanced photorefractive properties of Bi-doped Sn2P2S6

2008

International audience; Enhanced photorefractive properties of tin hypothiodiphosphate (Sn2P2S6) crystals as a result of Bi doping are presented. These new crystals were obtained by the vapor-transport technique using stoichiometric Sn2P2S6 composition with an additional amount of Bi up to 0.5 mol. % in the initial compound. The bandgap edges of the obtained crystals are located at ~750 nm and shift toward the red wavelengths with increasing Bi concentration. Sn2P2S6:Bi crystals are found to exhibit larger two-beam coupling gain coefficients (up to 17 cm−1 at a wavelength of 854 nm) as compared to (i) pure Sn2P2S6 (2.5 cm−1 at 854 nm), (ii) Sn2P2S6 crystals modified by the growth conditions…

Second-harmonic Generation Microscopy of Carbon Nanotubes

2012

We image an individual single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) by second-harmonic generation (SHG) and transmission electron microscopy and propose that SHG microscopy could be used to probe the handedness of chiral SWNTs.

Structural and electrical properties of magnetron sputtered Ti(ON) thin films:The case of TiN doped in situ with oxygen.

2009

International audience; Incorporation of oxygen into TiN lattice results in formation of titanium oxynitrides, TiOxNy that have become particularly interesting for photocatalytic applications. Elaboration as well as characterization of TiN and in situ oxygen-doped thin films is the subject of this paper. Thin films, 250–320nm in thickness, have been deposited by dc-pulsed magnetron reactive sputtering from Ti target under controllable gas flows of Ar, N2 and O2. Optical monitoring of Ti plasma emission line at = 500nm has been implemented in order to stabilize the sputtering rate. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction in grazing incidence (GIXRD), micro-Raman spectroscopy, X…

Electromechanical Behavior of Single and Multiwall Carbon Nanotubes

2008

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be metallic or semiconductors depending simply on geometric characteristics. This peculiar electronic behavior, combined with high mechanical strength, make them potential building blocks of a new nano-electronic technology. High resolution images of CNTs often disclose structural deformations such as bent, twisted, or collapsed tubes. These deformations break the tube symmetry, and a change in their electronic properties should result. A computationally effective mixed finite element-tight-binding approach able to simulate the electromechanical behavior of single and multiwall nanotubes used in nano-electronic devices is presented. The finite element (FE) comput…

Strong enhancement of the Breit-Wigner-Fano Raman line in carbon nanotube bundles caused by plasmon band formation

2002

We investigate the origin of the Breit-Wigner-Fano line in the Raman spectra of individual single-walled carbon nanotubes and their bundles. Using confocal Raman microscopy and atomic-force microscopy we found that the Breit-Wigner-Fano line intensity increases strongly with the bundle thickness. We confirmed this result by Raman investigations of partially decomposed bundles, which were additionally investigated by transmission electron microscopy. Our random-phase approximation based theory, which identifies the Breit-Wigner-Fano line as an excited band of plasmon-phonon modes, is fully consistent with the experimental results.

Combination of Confocal Raman Spectroscopy and Electron Microscopy on the Same Individual Bundles of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

2002

We report a method to investigate the same individual single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) bundles with both transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy. Free-standing individual bundles are obtained by depositing a solution of suspend SWNTs on a carbon film with a regular pattern of holes, which can be localized by TEM and also by confocal Raman microscopy. While most of the TEM images predict that the bundles consist of tubes with a similar diameter, we will show that occasionally a certain tube diameter can be associated with a particular radial breathing mode frequency of the Raman spectrum. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are one-dimensional molecular structure…
