"Table 16" of "Test of CP invariance in vector-boson fusion production of the Higgs boson in the H → ττ channel in proton–proton collisions at s=13Te…

Post-fit distributions of the event yields as a function of the Optimal Observable in the SR for the $\tau_{\mathrm{had}}\tau_{\mathrm{had}}$ analysis channel. The values of $\tilde d$, the signal strength $\mu$, the normalization of background processes, and nuisance parameters for the event yield prediction are set to those which minimize the NLL. The size of the combined statistical, experimental and theoretical uncertainties is given.

Post-fit Optimal Observable distributions in the low BDT score CR for the $\tau_{\mathrm{lep}}\tau_{\mathrm{had}}$ analysis channel. ''Other bkg'' denotes all background contributions not listed explicitly in the legend. The size of the combined statistical, experimental, and theoretical uncertainties is given. The exact value of the $p_{\mathrm{T}}$ cut on the leading lepton depends on the trigger.

Post-fit distribution of weighted event yields as a function of the Optimal Observable for all four SRs combined. The contributions of the different SRs are weighted by a factor of ln(1 + S/B), where S and B are the post-fit expected numbers of signal and background events in that region, respectively. The size of the combined statistical, experimental, and theoretical uncertainties is given.
Optimal estimation of losses at the ultimate quantum limit with non-Gaussian states
2009
We address the estimation of the loss parameter of a bosonic channel probed by arbitrary signals. Unlike the optimal Gaussian probes, which can attain the ultimate bound on precision asymptotically either for very small or very large losses, we prove that Fock states at any fixed photon number saturate the bound unconditionally for any value of the loss. In the relevant regime of low-energy probes, we demonstrate that superpositions of the first low-lying Fock states yield an absolute improvement over any Gaussian probe. Such few-photon states can be recast quite generally as truncations of de-Gaussified photon-subtracted states.
From Ethnic Law to Town Law: The Customs of the Kingdom of Sicily from the Twelfth to the Fifteenth Century
2016
The history of Sicily, the largest island of the Mediterranean, is notably distinct from the history of the rest of Italy. It is because of this distinctiveness that Sicily can serve as a paradigmatic example of a pluralist legal system, one with a mix of both personal-law and territorial-law rules. In the time period that I examine in this essay, customary law took several different forms. What legislation, private records, and judicial decisions all call »custom« plays three different roles: law of specific ethnic groups, rights and customary practices concerning real property, and the law of towns.
Water Level Measurement Locations for Coastal Aquifer Management
2003
The coefficient of variation of the optimal cost (CVOC) method is applied to the Acqua dei Corsari coastal aquifer in Sicily's north coast to find the best point for a new water-level measurement location. The purpose of collecting data from the new measurement location is to reduce uncertainty associated with a stochastic management model for salt-water intrusion control. Assuming that uncertainty mainly stems from spatial variability of permeability, the structural parameters of the stochastic spatial permeability field are estimated using data from a nearby aquifer with similar geological properties. It is first shown through sensitivity analysis that the lack of previous information inh…
