Supercritical CO2 extraction of essential oil from orange peel. Effect of operation conditions on the extract composition

1999

Abstract The supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of orange essential oil was studied using dehydrated orange peel (0.0538 kg H2O/kg dm) from naveline cultivars as raw material and CO2 as solvent. The effect of operation conditions was analyzed in a series of experiments at temperatures between 293 and 323 K and pressures between 8 and 28 MPa. The collected extracts were analyzed and the relative composition of the essential oil was determined. Limonene was the principal component extracted, the optimum conditions for limonene extraction were 12.5 MPa and 308 K, in these conditions limonene represents more than 99.5% of the essential oil. Within the operating range conditions, the optimum f…

Change in Taste-altering Non-volatile Components of Blood and Common Orange Fruit during Cold Storage

2020

Abstract Cold storage may cause changes in the volatile and non-volatile components of orange fruit, in association with the decrement of the characteristic fruit flavour and sensory acceptability. The aim of this work was to evaluate the changes of some non-volatile taste-altering components (total and individual sugars, acids, anthocyanins, putrescine and limonin) that may affect the organoleptic perception of cold-stored orange fruit. Three blood orange varieties ('Tarocco TDV', 'Tarocco Gallo', and 'Moro') and a common variety ('Washington navel') were stored at 6 ± 1 °C and 90–95% Relative Humidity (RH) for 60 d. Chemical and sensory assessments were performed during fruit storage at 1…

<title>Influence of strong static magnetic field on human cancer HT 1080 cells</title>

2001

The aim of this study was to investigate strong uniform magnetic field influence on the human cancer cells HT 1080. The cells were treated with magnetic field of intensity 1,16 Tesla and with anticancer agent - cis-platinum 0.025 mg/ml or vincristinum 2-3 ng/ml. The intact and the treated cell samples were incubated in a medium with acridine orange (AO). The magnetic field after 15 minutes of influence significantly increased cytoplasmic red fluorescence. Increased AO accumulation in lysosomes suggested to cancer cell metabolic activity stimulation.© (2001) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Contrast sensitivity and color perception with orange and yellow intraocular lenses

2012

To evaluate contrast sensitivity function (CSF) and color vision after implantation of either orange or yellow-tinted intraocular lenses (IOLs).Fifty-six eyes of 28 cataract patients who had bilateral implantation of orange-tinted (PC440Y Orange, Ophtec), yellow-tinted (AcrySof Natural SN60AT, Alcon), or clear (AcrySof SA60AT, Alcon) IOLs were examined. Six months postoperatively, monocular CSF under photopic and mesopic (with and without glare) conditions were measured using the Functional Visual Analyzer. Color discrimination was determined with the Farnsworth-Munsell 100-Hue test.Patients implanted with orange-tinted, yellow-tinted, or clear IOLs displayed similar CSF values, with no sta…

Toluidine Blue Test for Sperm DNA Integrity and Elaboration of Image Cytometry Algorithm

2003

Background: Sperm DNA integrity is of paramount importance in the prognosis of fertility. We applied image cytometry to a toluidine blue (TB) test we recently proposed. Methods: Sperm samples from 33 men were assayed for standard sperm parameters and classified as normal or abnormal. Sperm smears were subjected to the TB test, DNA denaturation testing with acridine orange (AO), and terminal deoxyuridine triphosphate biotin nick end labeling (TUNEL). In CCD image analysis, TB-stained sperm cell heads were microscopically assigned to one of four color groups (dark, blue, light violet, and light blue). The optical densities of 6,600 cells in green and red CCD images were used to elaborate an a…

Oral topotecan in children with recurrent or progressive high-grade glioma: a Phase I/II study by the German Society for Pediatric Oncology and Hemat…

2004

BACKGROUND Continuous oral treatment with topotecan may be more effective than the typical 1-day and 5-day treatment schedules. In previous studies of continuous treatment with topotecan, increased intestinal side effects were reported in adult patients; however, the experience in pediatric patients and patients with high-grade glioma is quite limited. METHODS Thirty-two pediatric patients with recurrent high-grade glioma (16 females and 16 males; median age, 9.5 years) were enrolled in the current Phase I/II study. Tumor locations included the cerebral cortex (n = 5), pons (n = 18), and other sites (n = 9). An injectable formulation of topotecan was administered orally, in ice-cold orange …

The Role of Packaging in Positioning an Orange Juice

2007

Abstract This article revises the concept and positioning strategies according to the proposals of different authors. Positioning is related to variables in the marketing mix, and, specifically, to the main subject of this research study—packaging. The theories of different authors with respect to the functions of packaging and its constituent elements are revised and then attention is focused on four of its graphic elements: Color, shape, typography, and image. Within this framework, designer and consumer opinions are presented with the ultimate aim of identifying the associations between different positioning strategies and the different graphic design variables used to define an orange j…

Novel GTA-PVA Fricke gels for three-dimensional dose mapping in radiotherapy

2017

Abstract One of the most recent and promising developments in radiotherapy dosimetry was the introduction of 3D radiation-sensitive gels. These gels present tissue equivalent composition and density, so they also serve as phantoms, and their response is largely independent of radiation quality and dose rate. Some gels are infused with ferrous sulfate and rely on the radiation-induced oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric ions (Fricke-gels). These formulations suffer from spontaneous-oxidation and diffusion of ferric ions after irradiation; chelating agents such as xylenol-orange significantly reduces the latter. Other gel types consist of dispersed monomers, and rely on radiation-induced cros…

Enhancing the photocatalytic properties of PbS QD solids: the ligand exchange approach.

2019

Surface engineering of nanomaterials is a promising tool towards the design of new materials for conversion of solar energy into chemical energy. In this work, we examine the influence of ligand exchange on the photocatalytic performance of solution-processed PbS films. We test different ligands such as oleylamine (OAm), 1,2-ethanedithiol (EDT), 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) and tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI). The study demonstrates that PbS films capped with MPA and EDT exhibit 3.5-fold enhanced photocatalytic performance for the photodecomposition of methyl orange upon sunlight exposure. Both band energy alignment and charge carrier transport have a strong impact on the generation of r…
