Control of N-Heterocyclic Carbene Catalyzed Reactions of Enals: Asymmetric Synthesis of Oxindole-γ-Amino Acid Derivatives.

2017

A strategy to control the switch between a non‐cycloaddition reaction and a cycloaddition reaction of enals, using N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyisis, has been developed. The new scalable protocol leads to γ‐amino‐acid esters bearing a tetrasubstituted stereocenter in good yields and high stereoselectivities by homo‐Mannich reactions of enals and isatin‐derived ketimines. By simply changing the N‐ketimine substituent to an ortho‐hydroxy phenyl group, the corresponding spirocyclic oxindolo‐γ‐lactams are obtained. peerReviewed

Modeling atmospheric aging of small-scale wood combustion emissions: distinguishing causal effects from non-causal associations

2022

Small-scale wood combustion is a significant source of particulate emissions. Atmospheric transformation of wood combustion emissions is a complex process involving multiple compounds interacting simultaneously. Thus, an advanced methodology is needed to study the process in order to gain a deeper understanding of the emissions. In this study, we are introducing a methodology for simplifying this complex process by detecting dependencies of observed compounds based on a measured dataset. A statistical model was fitted to describe the evolution of combustion emissions with a system of differential equations derived from the measured data. The performance of the model was evaluated using simu…

Saturation vapor pressure characterization of selected low-volatility organic compounds using a residence time chamber

2023

Saturation vapor pressure (psat) is an important thermodynamic property regulating the gas-to-particle partitioning of organic compounds in the atmosphere. Low-volatility organic compounds (LVOCs), with sufficiently low psat values, primarily stay in the particle phase and contribute to aerosol formation. Obtaining accurate information on the psat of LVOCs requires volatility measurements performed at temperatures relevant to atmospheric aerosol formation. Here, we present an isothermal evaporation method using a residence time chamber to measure psat for dry single-compound nanoparticles at 295 K. Our method is able to characterize organic compounds with psat spanning from 10−8 to 10−4 Pa …

Predicting liquid–liquid phase separation in ternary organic–organic–water mixtures

2023

Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) affects the water uptake of aerosol particles in the atmosphere through Kelvin and Raoult effects. This study investigates LLPS in ternary mixtures containing water and two organic compounds, using a conductor-like screening model for real solvents (COSMO-RS). COSMO-RS found LLPS in all of the studied mixtures containing water and proxies for primary and secondary organic aerosol (POA and SOA, respectively), due to the limited solubility of the hydrophobic POA proxies in water. The computations predict additional three-phase states in some of the SOA–POA–water mixtures at relative humidity (RH) close to 100%, which was not observed in experiments, likel…

Base-promoted direct amidation of esters: beyond the current scope and practical applications

2022

The base-promoted direct amidation of unactivated esters is among the most useful reactions for amide bond formation in contemporary organic chemistry. The intensive research in this area has led to the development of a number of new methods to achive this transformation. However, to date, the existing literature is more methodological and in many instances lacks practical directions. Therefore, the full potential of this transformation is yet to be revealed by broadening the substrate scope. In a search for new practical applications of the amidation reaction, herein we present a comprehensive study of a number of base-promoted direct amidations that encompass a wide range of amines and es…

Nonlinear optical properties of diaromatic stilbene, butadiene and thiophene derivatives

2021

Series of highly polar stilbene (1a–e), diphenylbutadiene (2a–c) and phenylethenylthiophene (3a–c) derivatives were prepared via Horner–Wadsworth–Emmons method with a view to produce new and efficient materials for second harmonic generation (SHG) in the solid-state. The single-crystal X-ray structures of compounds 1–3 reveal extensive polymorphism and a peculiar photodimerization of the 2-chloro-3,4-dimethoxy-4′-nitrostilbene derivative 1a to afford two polymorphs of tetra-aryl cyclobutane 4. The stilbene congeners 2-chloro-3,4-dimethoxy-4′-nitrostilbene (1a·non-centro), 5-bromo-2-hydroxy-3-nitro-4′-nitrostilbene (1b) and 4-dimethylamino-4′-nitrostilbene (1e), as well as 4′-fluoro-4′′-nitr…

[3+2]‐Cycloadditions of N ‐Cyano Sulfoximines with 1,3‐Dipoles

2020

Involving the cyano group of N‐cyano sulfoximines in [3+2]‐cycloaddition reactions with 1,3‐dipoles provides practical routes for the construction of 5‐membered heterocycles bearing sulfoximinoyl moieties. An ytterbium‐catalyzed cycloaddition utilizing hydrazonoyl chlorides was developed, as well as a reaction involving imidoyl chlorides proceeding without the aid of a catalyst. Following these protocols, a range of sulfoximines with N‐1,2,4‐triazolyl and N‐1,2,4‐oxadiazolyl substituents was prepared. peerReviewed
