The crystal and molecular structure of [Cu(Im)6] (HCOO)2 (Im = imidazole) has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The compound is built of centrosymmetric Cu(Im) inf6 sup2− cations and non-coordinated HCO2 − anions, linked through H-bonds giving a layered structure in the ac plane. The coordination polyhedron around the Cu atoms can be described as a rhombically-distorted octahedron (CuN2N′2N′'2 chromophores). Both electronic and e.p.r. spectra are indicative of an essentially d x2− y2 ground state for the CuII ions. No exchange coupling has been detected down to 4.2 K by means of magnetic susceptibility measurements. This feature is discussed on the basis of the structural data.

Pediatric visceral leishmaniasis in Western Sicily, Italy: a retrospective analysis of 111 cases

The clinical and epidemiological characteristics of 111 consecutive cases of visceral leishmaniasis identified from 1980 to 2000 in a Sicilian pediatric hospital were analyzed retrospectively. The mean age of the patients was 1.7 years. All children were HIV negative, but 15% were severely malnourished. Fever and splenomegaly were present in all cases and hepatomegaly in 101 (90.1%) cases. Thrombocytopenia and anemia were both observed in 78 (70.2%) cases and leukopenia in 47 (42.3%) cases. The [Cu(sulfathiazolato)(2)(benzimidazole)(2)]2MeOH complex has been synthesised and characterised. It crystallises in the monoclinic system, space group C1c1, with unit cell dimensions a=18.829(7) A, b=12.206(3) A, c=17.233(5) A, alpha=90.06(2) degrees, beta=97.28(3) degrees, gamma=90.21(3) degrees and Z=4. The geometry around the copper(II) ion is intermediate between tetrahedral and square planar. The complex produces cleavage of plasmid pUC18 in presence of reducing agents. The efficiency of cleavage reaction of the title compound with pUC18 and with different reducing agents follows the order ascorbate-H(2)O(2)>ascorbate>MPA>dithiothreitol>H(2)O(2).
