NO nu A plus T2K: The race for the neutrino mass hierarchy

2006

The determination of the ordering of the neutrino masses (the hierarchy) is probably a crucial prerequisite to understand the origin of lepton masses and mixings and to establish their relationship to the analogous properties in the quark sector. Here, we follow an alternative strategy to the usual neutrino--antineutrino comparison in long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments: we exploit the combination of the neutrino-only data from the NOvA and the T2K experiments by performing these two off-axis experiments at different distances but at the same $/L$, where $$ is the mean neutrino energy and $L$ is the baseline. This would require a minor adjustment to the proposed off-axis angle fo…

Confusing nonzero theta(13) with nonstandard interactions in the solar neutrino sector

2009

Solar and KamLAND data are in slight tension when interpreted in the standard two-flavor oscillations framework and this may be alleviated allowing for a non-zero value of the mixing angle theta_13. Here we show that, likewise, non-standard flavor-changing interactions (FCI), possibly intervening in the propagation of solar neutrinos, are equally able to alleviate this tension and therefore constitute a potential source of confusion in the determination of theta_13. By performing a full three-flavor analysis of solar and KamLAND data in presence of FCI we provide a quantitative description of the degeneracy existing between theta_13 and the vectorial coupling eps_e\tau^dV characterizing the…

Relating quarks and leptons with the T7 flavour group

2015

In this letter we present a model for quarks and leptons based on T7 as flavour symmetry, predicting a canonical mass relation between charged leptons and down-type quarks proposed earlier. Neutrino masses are generated through a Type-I seesaw mechanism, with predicted correlations between the atmospheric mixing angle and neutrino masses. Compatibility with oscillation results lead to lower bounds for the lightest neutrino mass as well as for the neutrinoless double beta decay rates, even for normal neutrino mass hierarchy.

Predictions from warped flavor dynamics based on the T′ family group

2020

We propose a realistic theory of fermion masses and mixings using a five-dimensional warped scenario where all fermions propagate in the bulk and the Higgs field is localized on the IR brane. The assumed $T'$ flavor symmetry is broken on the branes by flavon fields, providing a consistent scenario where fermion mass hierarchies arise from adequate choices of the bulk mass parameters, while quark and lepton mixing angles are restricted by the family symmetry. Neutrino mass splittings, mixing parameters and the Dirac CP phase all arise from the type-I seesaw mechanism and are tightly correlated, leading to predictions for the neutrino oscillation parameters, as well as expected \znbb decay ra…

Dynamics of four-wave-mixing oscillators with quasi-phase-matching

2009

The effect of pump-wave misalignment on the oscillation spectra of a semilinear photorefractive oscillator is studied numerically and compared with the results of experiments performed with ${\text{BaTiO}}_{3}:\text{Co}$ and ${\text{KNbO}}_{3}:\text{Ag},\text{Fe}$ crystals.

Timing and patterns of the ENSO signal in Africa over the last 30 years: insights from normalized difference vegetation index data.

2014

Abstract A more complete picture of the timing and patterns of the ENSO signal during the seasonal cycle for the whole of Africa over the three last decades is provided using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Indeed, NDVI has a higher spatial resolution and is more frequently updated than in situ climate databases, and highlights the impact of ENSO on vegetation dynamics as a combined result of ENSO on rainfall, solar radiation, and temperature. The month-by-month NDVI–Niño-3.4 correlation patterns evolve as follows. From July to September, negative correlations are observed over the Sahel, the Gulf of Guinea coast, and regions from the northern Democratic Republic of Congo…

Transient color centers in complex oxide crystals

2005

The present work is devoted to investigation of induced by a pulsed electron beam (E = 0.25 MeV, τ = 10 ns) transient color centers in pure Gd3Ga5O12, YAlO3 and LiNbO3 single crystals. The relaxation of induced absorption of the crystals was studied within 0-5000 ns range. The origin and nature of transient color centers responsible for induced absorption was discussed. A Constrained Optimal Model Predictive Control for Mono Inverter Dual Parallel PMSM Drives

2018

The actual trends in the design of AC drives are directed to the reduction of the total weight, volume and cost. Usually, this implies the necessity to adopt new motor topologies and converter architectures. An important role is played by the mono-inverter dual parallel motor (MIDP), which gives the possibility to reduce the total weight and costs of power converters. This paper proposes a novel model predictive control algorithm in order to improve the transient performances of a MIDP used for an overhead carrier. The effectiveness of the proposal control is verified through some numerical simulations.

A novel kind of neutrino oscillation experiment

1994

A novel method to look for neutrino oscillations is proposed based on the elastic scattering process $\bar{\nu}_{i} e^{-}\rightarrow \bar{\nu}_{i} e^{-}$, taking advantage of the dynamical zero present in the differential cross section for $\bar{\nu}_{e} e^{-}\rightarrow \bar{\nu}_{e} e^{-}$. An effective tunable experiment between the "appearance" and "disappearance" limits is made possible. Prospects to exclude the allowed region for atmospheric neutrino oscillations are given.

Adaptive Control Design for Underactuated Cranes With Guaranteed Transient Performance: Theoretical Design and Experimental Verification

2022

For antiswing control of underactuated cranes, how to guarantee the converging speed of cranes through control design is essential but still remains unsolved. In this paper, the adaptive antiswing control for underactuated gantry cranes with guaranteed transient performance under unmodeled dynamics and external disturbances is investigated. To sovle this problem, a set of filters are proposed to make the backstepping technique applicable for the control of crane systems. Then through variable transformation the position error and swing angel could be guaranteed converging to the origin with a given exponential speed. Hardware experiments are conducted to show that the proposed scheme achiev…
