Disentangling conditional effects of multiple regime shifts on Atlantic cod productivity

AbstractRegime shifts are increasingly prevalent in the ecological literature. However, definitions vary, and many detection methods are subjective. Here, we employ an operationally objective means of identifying regime shifts, using a Bayesian online change-point detection algorithm able to simultaneously identify shifts in the mean and(or) variance of time series data. Interaction of accretion shocks with winds

Accretion shocks are known to oscillate in presence of cooling processes in the disk. This oscillation may also cause quasi-periodic oscillations of black holes. In the presence of strong winds, these shocks have oscillations in vertical direction as well. We show examples of shock oscillations under the influence of both the effects. When the shocks are absent and the flow is cooler, the wind becomes weaker and the vertical oscillation becomes negligible.

Shock oscillation model for quasi-periodic oscillations in stellar mass and supermassive black holes

We numerically examine centrifugally supported shock waves in 2D rotating accretion flows around a stellar-mass (10M_sun) and a supermassive (10^6M_sun) black holes over a wide range of input accretion rates of 10^7 >\dot M/\dot M_E>10^{-4}. The resultant 2D-shocks are unstable with time and the luminosities show quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with modulations of a factor of 2-3 andwith periods of a tenth seconds to several hours, depending on the black hole masses. A nonstationary model for the analysis of transient speech signals

In this correspondence, a model is presented for the analysis of transient speech signals, which is based on a sum of the impulsive responses corresponding to a number of poles with time-dependent parameters. The aim of this analysis is to obtain discriminative features of the different transient elements of speech.

Cyclicity of common slow–fast cycles

Abstract We study the limit cycles of planar slow–fast vector fields, appearing near a given slow–fast cycle, formed by an arbitrary sequence of slow parts and fast parts, and where the slow parts can meet the fast parts in a nilpotent contact point of arbitrary order. Using the notion slow divergence integral, we delimit a large subclass of these slow–fast cycles out of which at most one limit cycle can perturb, and a smaller subclass out of which exactly one limit cycle will perturb. Reconstruction of Low Energy Neutrino Events with GPUs at IceCube

IceCube is a cubic kilometer neutrino observatory located at the South Pole that produces massive amounts of data by measuring individual Cherenkov photons from neutrino interaction events in the energy range from few GeV to several PeV. The actual reconstruction of neutrino events in the GeV range is computationally challenging due to the scarcity of data produced by single events. Measuring lung function in asthmatic children: A spirometry and forced oscillation technique (FOT) comparison

Background: Spirometry is the most common pulmonary function test used in asthma diagnosing. However, it requires good patient co-operation. FOT has gained increasing attention for the measurement of pulmonary function in children because it is performed at steady state breathing. This paper examines the activity of the spokesperson by means of an analogy with the art of ventriloquism. It is composed of three parts: in the first one we introduce some definitions of «spokesperson» in order to explain in what consists his activity. The second part is devoted to the analysis of the linguistic aspects of the spokesperson’s activity with particular reference to some language operations: a) self-effacement; b) attribution of agentivity. Finally, in the last part we discuss some questions that remain open in the debate on spokesperson’s activity.

On the dynamical stability of negative conductance free running oscillators

For a class of weakly nonlinear autonomous systems exhibiting both resistive and reactive nonlinearities, asymptotic orbital stability is investigated through a new narrow-band differential approach. The main result is the derivation of the exact characteristic polynomial associated with the local dynamics of the amplitude and phase of the free-running oscillation to be tested. Photometric and spectroscopic variability of the B5IIIe star HD 171219

We analyzed the star HD 171219, one of the relatively bright Be stars observed in the seismo field of the CoRoT satellite, in order to determine its physical and pulsation characteristics. Classical Be stars are main-sequence objects of mainly B-type, whose spectra show, or have shown at some epoch, Balmer lines in emission and an infrared excess. Both characteristics are attributed to an equatorially concentrated circumstellar disk fed by non-periodic mass-loss episodes (outbursts).
