Population dynamics of fossorial water vole (Arvicola terrestris scherman): a land use and landscape perspective

Abstract This study investigates the effect of land use, and landscape composition and structure on the population dynamics of fossorial water vole (Arvicola terrestris scherman Shaw). Water vole populations were monitored from 1989 to 1994 in the Doubs department, France, by using index methods. Land use patterns were studied based on agriculture and forestry data from the French Ministry of Agriculture collected in 1956, 1970, 1979 and 1988. Grassland quality and landscape structure were studied based on field transects, combined with the assessment of landscape structure from maps at 1:25,000 scale. [EN] In the present article we discuss the cooperative nature of the spin crossover phenomenon in iron(II) complexes, providing a perspective of the state of the art in this area. The first aspect we discuss is the role of the intermolecular interactions, more precisely the ¿-interactions, in mononuclear complexes. We show that by playing with the nature of the ligands, aliphatic, aromatic, or extended aromatic, it is possible to create stronger cohesive forces and receive a more cooperative response from the compound. Nuclear inelastic scattering of synchrotron radiation has been used now since 10 years as a tool for vibrational spectroscopy. This method has turned out especially useful in case of large molecules that contain a M\"ossbauer active metal center. Recent applications to iron-sulfur proteins, to iron(II) spin crossover complexes and to tin-DNA complexes are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the combination of nuclear inelastic scattering and density functional calculations.

Abstract. Reasonable prediction of landslide occurrences in a given area requires the choice of an appropriate probability distribution of recurrence time intervals. Although landslides are widespread and frequent in many parts of the world, complete databases of landslide occurrences over large periods are missing and often such natural disasters are treated as processes uncorrelated in time and, therefore, Poisson distributed.
