Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mineral density and/or poor bone microarchitecture leading to an increased risk of fractures. The skeletal alterations in osteoporosis are a consequence of a relative deficit of bone formation compared to bone resorption. Osteoporosis therapies have mostly relied on antiresorptive drugs. An alternative therapeutic approach for osteoporosis is currently available, based on the intermittent administration of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Callus distraction of the femur and tibia. Experience with the Monofixator - indications for reosteosynthesis

In a 4-year period, 18 patients underwent callus distraction of the femur or tibia with the use of a unilateral external fixator. Twelve patients had post-traumatic bone loss resulting from complex lower-limb fractures. The bony defect was located in the tibia in 11 cases and in the femur in one case. All patients had major associated soft-tissue lesions. The length of the bony defect averaged 6.25 cm. Eight fractures were infected at the beginning of treatment. Six other patients underwent callus distraction for reasons of limb shortening. Five femora and one tibia were lengthened. The average increase in length was 6.5 cm. Hyperplastic callus formation in osteogenesis imperfecta: CT and MRI findings.

Hyperplastic callus formation is a noteworthy condition in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta because it often mimicks osteosarcoma on radiography. The findings of CT and MRI in hyperplastic callus formation have not been reported. In the presented case, MRI demonstrated contrast enhancement and edema of the surrounding soft tisssue, consistent with benign as well as malignant disease. Computed tomography showed a calcified rim of the lesion which may be a useful feature to rule out osteosarcoma in this condition.

It has been shown that inorganic monomeric and polymeric silica/silicate, in the presence of the biomineralization cocktail, increases the expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG) in osteogenic SaOS-2 sarcoma cells in vitro. In contrast, silicate does not affect the steady-state gene expression level of the osteoclastogenic ligand receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL). In turn it can be expected that the concentration ratio of the mediators OPG/RANKL increases in the presence of silicate. Abstract Objective During orthodontic therapy the correct strength of mechanical strain plays a key role for bone remodelling during tooth movement. Aim of this study was to investigate the osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPdLF) depending on the applied strength of mechanical strain compared to osteoblasts (HOB).
