The most commonly used technique for gene detection is the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR is associated with alterations in ionic activity because inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) and inorganic phosphate (Pi) ions are produced during nucleotide polymerization. To maintain electro-neutrality, magnesium, potassium, and ammonium ions are bound to DNA. Deoxynucleotides are also bound to DNA during PCR. Some authors have described DNA itself as an electrically conducting polymer formed by base stapling with the formation of extensive Pi systems. Radical anions of 1-phenyl-3-chloronortricyclene and 1-phenylnortricyclene were produced by reduction with potassium in 1,2-dimethoxyethane under a high vacuum. The initially formed radical anion of 1-phenyl-3-chloronortricyclene was very unstable, and decomposed finally to the anions of naphthalene and biphenyl. The only product of the reduction of 1-phenylnortricyclene was the biphenyl anion. The EPR spectra of the reaction mixtures were measured at temperatures from —80°C to room temperature.
Isostructural potassium and thallium salts of sterically crowded triazenes: a structural and computational study.

Because of their similar cationic radii, potassium and thallium(I) compounds are usually regarded as closely related. Homologous molecular species containing either K(+) or Tl(+) are very rare, however. We have synthesized potassium and thallium salts MN3RR' derived from the biphenyl- or terphenyl-substituted triazenes Tph2N3H (1a), Dmp(Mph)N3H (1b), Dmp(Tph)N3H (1c), and (Me4Ter)2N3H (1d) (Dmp=2,6-Mes 2C6H3 with Mes=2,4,6-Me3C6H2; Me4Ter=2,6-(3,5-Me2C6H3)2C6H3; Mph=2-MesC6H4; Tph=2-TripC6H4 with Trip=2,4,6-(i)Pr3C6H2). Abstract Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in diabetic patients, which in turn is also associated with low levels of serum testosterone. The working hypothesis was that diabetes might modify the mechanisms involved in the vascular actions of testosterone in isolated rabbit carotid arteries. Testosterone (10 −8 –3 × 10 −4 M) induced a concentration-dependent relaxation of precontracted carotid arteries, which was higher in diabetic than in control rabbits. Hypertensive obese subjects with glucose intolerance have hyperinsulinaemia, insulin resistance and intracellular cation imbalance resulting in increased sodium content. The aim of our study was to assess in these patients plasma levels of endogenous digoxin-like factor (EDLF), an inhibitor of the sodium-pump mechanism. Oxidative stress has been related to the development of diabetic neuropathy. Experimental diabetes (alloxan injection to mice) promotes early biochemical changes in peripheral nervous tissue, e.g., decrease in Na,K-ATPase activity and glutathione (GSH) peroxidase (GSHPx) activity. The former decrease can be reverted by inhibiting protein kinase C (PKC), since it has been reported that PKC is activated in these experimental conditions. The effect of alloxan-induced diabetes on glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in sciatic nerve of mice has been studied. We have found, 7 days after alloxan treatment, a significant decrease in this enzymatic activity in the cytosol of sciatic nerve of diabetic mice, and moreover, that these changes remained unaltered up to 21 days after alloxan injection. No modification in the glutathione content of sciatic nerve of diabetic mice was observed throughout the experiment when compared with controls. Our working hypothesis was that diabetes might modify the vascular actions of testosterone in isolated rabbit renal arteries and the mechanisms involved in these actions. The relation between diabetes and stroke is bidirectional: diabetes is an important risk factor for ischemic stroke, and acute stroke frequently induces hyperglycemia. On the other hand, plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels are raised in diabetes and stroke. The purpose was to study how alloxan-induced diabetes might modify the effects of BNP in rabbit carotid arteries and the mechanisms involved in such actions.
