Microbial microstratification, inorganic carbon photoassimilation and dark carbon fixation at the chemocline of the meromictic Lake Cadagno (Switzerl…
2001
The microstratification of the microbial community at the chemocline of Lake Cadagno and the associated inorganic carbon fixation activity was studied by fine layer sampling. A deep chlorophyll maximum caused by diatoms overlying Cryptomonas was found at the upper edge of the chemocline. A high population density of phototrophic sulphur bacteria, mainly Amoebobacter cf. purpureus, occurred closely below the oxic-anoxic boundary. Despite the small fraction of total lake volume represented by the chemocline, half of the total carbon photoassimilation of the lake occurred within the chemocline with approximately equal contributions by oxygenic and anoxygenic phototrophs. Rates of dark carbon f…

Upconversion nanoparticles with a strong acid-resistant capping
2016
Water-dispersible upconversion nanoparticles (β-NaYF:Yb,Er, UCNP) coated with a thin shell of a biocompatible copolymer comprising 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulphonsulphonic acid (AMPS), which we will term COP, have been prepared by multidentate grafting. This capping is remarkably resistant to strong acidic conditions as low as pH 2. The additional functionality of the smart UCNP@COP nanosystem has been proved by its association to a well-known photosensitizer (namely, methylene blue, MB). The green-to-red emission ratio of the UC@COP@MB nanohybrid exhibits excellent linear dependence in the 7 to 2 pH range as a consequence of the release of the d…
Evolution of Early Metazoa: Phylogenetic Status of the Hexactinellida Within the Phylum of Porifera (Sponges)
1998
The evolution of the Metazoa from their protozoan ancestors is one of the greatest puzzles of phylogeny (Willmer 1994; Cavalier-Smith et al. 1996). The emergence of multicellular animals has been explained by two major theories: the syncytial theory (Hadzi 1963) - origin from a multinucleated ciliate - and the colonial theory (Haeckel 1868) - origin from a colonial flagellate - both of which assume a di(poly)phyletic origin of the Metazoa. Numerous attempts to resolve whether the Metazoa are of mono- or polyphyletic origin have sought evidence from a wide variety of developmental and morphological data such as body symmetry, type of development (protostome vs. deuterostome), type of body ca…
The importance of a highly active and DeltapH-regulated diatoxanthin epoxidase for the regulation of the PS II antenna function in diadinoxanthin cyc…
2005
The present study focuses on the regulation of diatoxanthin (Dtx) epoxidation in the diadinoxanthin (Ddx) cycle containing algae Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Cyclotella meneghiniana and Prymnesium parvum and its significance for the control of the photosystem II (PS II) antenna function. Our data show that Dtx epoxidase can exhibit extremely high activities when algal cells are transferred from high light (HL) to low light (LL). Under HL conditions, Dtx epoxidation is strongly inhibited by the light-driven proton gradient. Uncoupling of the cells during HL illumination restores the high epoxidation rates observed during LL. In Ddx cycle containing algae, non-photoche…
Influence of different soluble dietary fibers on the bioaccessibility of the minor Fusarium mycotoxin beauvericin.
2011
Abstract Beauvericin (BEA) is a bioactive compound produced by the secondary metabolism of several Fusarium strains and is known to have various biological activities. This study investigated the bioaccessibility of the BEA tested in concentrations of 5 and 25 mg/L, in a model solution and in wheat crispy breads elaborated with different natural binding compounds as the soluble alimentary dietary fibers β-1,3 glucan, chitosan low molecular weight (L.M.W.), chitosan medium molecular weight (M.M.W.), fructooligosaccharides (FOS), galattomannan, inulin and pectin, added at concentrations of 1% and 5%. The bioaccessibility was determinated by employing a simulated gastrointestinal digestion tha…
Center-to-limb variation of the area covered by magnetic bright points in the quiet Sun
2011
CONTEXT: The quiet Sun magnetic fields produce ubiquitous bright points (BPs) that cover a significant fraction of the solar surface. Their contribution to the total solar irradiance (TSI) is so-far unknown. AIMS: To measure the center-to-limb variation (CLV) of the fraction of solar surface covered by quiet Sun magnetic bright points. The fraction is referred to as 'fraction of covered surface', or FCS. METHODS: Counting of the area covered by BPs in G-band images obtained at various heliocentric angles with the 1-m Swedish Solar Telescope on La Palma. Through restoration, the images are close to the diffraction limit of the instrument (~0.1 arcsec). RESULTS: The FCS is largest at disk cen…
Performance of Spectral Fitting Methods for vegetation fluorescence quantification
2010
The Fraunhofer Line Discriminator (FLD) principle has long been considered as the reference method to quantify solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (F) from passive remote sensing measurements. Recently, alternative retrieval algorithms based on the spectral fitting of hyperspectral radiance observations, Spectral Fitting Methods (SFMs), have been proposed. The aim of this manuscript is to investigate the performance of such algorithms and to provide relevant information regarding their use. FLD and SFMs were used to estimate F starting from Top Of Canopy (TOC) fluxes at very high spectral resolution (0.12 nm) and sampling interval (0.1 nm), exploiting the O2-B (687.0 nm) and O2-A (760.6 …

Energy transfer from colour centres to the dopant in alkali halides
1997
Abstract Energy transfer from F centres to the dopant ions in photostimulated processes is examined. It was found that in alkali halide systems the radiation defects are disposed in near vicinity of the dopants. Recombination of defects also takes place to a limited extent near the dopant with a fast and high-yield energy transfer to the latter. Role of unrelaxed H centres in the formation of donor-acceptor pairs is discussed. Some special exciton energy transfer mechanisms are analysed as well.
